"Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white." "While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, 'This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!'"

Message from Fr. Mike for Sunday, March 5 |
|
|
|
To the parishioners of St. Philip Neri Parish, sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints –
"Grace and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ”.
The true wisdom of God … as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him – these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit, for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.” (1 Corinthians 2: 9-10)
LOOK WHO’S IN HEAVEN
I was shocked, confused, bewildered as I entered Heaven’s door,
not by the beauty of it all, nor the lights and the décor.
But it was the folks in Heaven who made me sputter and gasp –
the thieves, the liars, the sinners, the alcoholics and the trash.
There stood the kid from 7th grade who swiped my lunch money twice.
Next to him was my old neighbor who never said anything nice.
Bob, who I always thought was rotting away in hell,
was sitting on Cloud 9, looking incredibly swell.
I nudged Jesus, “What’s the deal? I would love to hear your take.
How’d all these sinners get up here? God must’ve made a mistake.
“And why is everyone so quiet? So somber – give me a clue!”
“Hush child”, he said, “They’re all in shock.
No one thought they’d be seeing you!”
SO… JUDGE NOT!
Jesus had been speaking to some people in a crowded home when someone said to him, “Your mother and your brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you. Jesus replied. “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers? Pointing to his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers. Whoever does the will of my Father in Heaven is my brother and sister and mother. (Matthew 12: 46-49)
So … what does it take to get to Heaven? And in the final analysis, who will actually get into Heaven? --- whoever does the will of my Father in Heaven.
Lent, then, is a time for each of us to take stock of our own lifestyle. As we hear in the prayer, Desiderata, “Do not compare yourself to others; you will either become vain or bitter. Because, always, there is someone greater or lesser than yourself.” Our focus then, needs only to be on “ourselves” – and let God sort out the rest. As Pope Francis reflects, “Lent comes providentially to reawaken us, to shake us from our lethargy.”
God is good … all the time! We must be assured of his constant and persistent presence. Then, when we take the initiative to ask or search or knock, we can be assured of God’s loving response … in his time and in his way! Living in God’s desire, “In everything do to others as you would have them do to you; for this is the law and the prophets.” (Matthew 7: 12)
At our Baptism, the Spirit said of each of us, “You are my beloved daughter/son, in you I take great delight.” In our spiritual journey and awareness, each one of us must first believe that is true – for me, personally - that I am loveable and worthy of God’s love and concern for me – that I am precious in his sight. And then, in trust and confidence, allow God to be the “prime Mover” in my life.
“Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ”.
Praise be Jesus Christ … and Mary Immaculate
St. Philip Neri … pray for us
St. Eugene de Mazenod … pray for us
St. Kateri Tekakwitha … pray for us
God is good … all the time.
Fr. Mike Dechant OMI
Something from the Parish:
- To the women of the Parish: On Friday & Saturday, May 5 & 6, St. Philip Neri Parish invites you to gather for a Women’s Retreat. Through scripture, music, ritual and reflection, the Retreat Team (three wonderful women from Edmonton) will invite you to notice how each “Season of Life” can be enriching, challenging and an opportunity to draw closer to God. Both days go from 9:30 am to 5 pm … ending with the 5 pm Celebration of the Eucharist on Saturday. The retreat is held in the Welcome Area of the Parish. The cost is $100 per person – lunch will be provided by the Parish. (Please note, no one will be turned away because of the registration costs. Pay what you can manage, and the Parish will supplement the rest.) Contact the Parish Office to register, at (306) 343-0325. Throughout these past years of Covid confusion, isolation and turmoil, may this retreat be an opportunity to reconnect and revitalize yourselves as the women of the Parish.
Mark your calendar:
- Tuesday, March 14 (7 pm) – St. Philip Neri Parish will gather for our Lenten Penitential Service. Come and experience the forgiveness and healing of our loving God.
- Each Friday during Lent, let’s gather to reflect on Jesus’ journey - “The Stations of the Cross” - beginning with prayer at 5 pm, followed by food and friendship. The cash donation each week will go to supplement the costs of the Women’s Retreat.

A Prayer for Ukraine
God of peace and justice, we pray for the people of Ukraine today. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow, that your spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war or peace, for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children at risk and in fear that you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus the Prince of Peace. Amen.

Hi Everyone!
Well, we've made it through another bout of cold weather and we are back into the balmyness, at least for a couple of days! It looks like we could be on a bit of a weather rollercoaster (again!) for the next few weeks of March. But hey - Spring officially arrives on March 21, (well, on the calendar, anyway!), so like all other years at this time, we are filled with hope and can see the (spring) light at the end of the (winter) tunnel!
Our Lenten journey continues now into our second week. Let's see what's coming up for this week, in our Parish and around our Diocese, as we proceed along our journey of prayer, fasting and alms-giving:
- For your convenience, I have resurrected our "Week-at-a-Glance" feature. so that you can easily see what is happening around the Parish for the upcoming week. Something old is new again! Check it out, directly below.
- Save the date! St. Philip Neri Parish will be having our Lenten Penitential Service on Tuesday, March 14, at 7 pm. You may find the dates and times of other Penitential Services at various east-side parishes just below.
- There are a few more dates below for you to save. Please note the dates and times of the Triduum/Easter Services coming up during Holy Week as you scroll below.
- Here is a wonderful opportunity to add some additional prayer-time to your Lenten journey. There will be Stations of the Cross at 5:00 pm every Friday during Lent. A light supper of meatless soup and a bun will be served right after Stations. Please see all the details just below.
- Since this is the first Sunday of the month, that means it is Timbits Time after both of the weekend Masses. You may see all the details, including a little schedule, down below.
- Do you have a little five-year old at home that is gearing up for Kindergarten this fall? Please see St. Philip Elementary School registration information and details by scrolling down.
- Here is a chance to increase in alms-giving. For the month of March, we are collecting canned vegetables and 100% real fruit juice for the Food Bank. There is such a need out there, so let's keep filling our bin for them, like we did last week! More details are below.
- Young women between the ages of 18-35 may apply for the CWL Social Justice Award. Scroll down to read more about this.
- The next Bereavement Support gathering will be held on Tuesday, Mar. 7. Anyone can join at any time - we would love to have you. Please see more details below.
- The Golden Age card players are getting together again this Wed. March 8 for another afternoon of friendly card competition. More details are below.
- Freedom Fridays have been slightly tweaked due to Stations of the Cross during Lent also occuring on Fridays. Please see all the details below - and plan to join us!

- Development and Peace continues their great work through Share Lent 2023. Please see information below for Week 2. There is also a wonderful new video (and letter) from Bishop Mark encouraging our participation and support of D & P, and this year's Share Lent. Here is another important opportunity for prayer and alms-giving during Lent.
- There is an Easter Tea and Bake Sale coming up on March 18 over at Saints Peter and Paul Ukrainian Catholic Church Auditorium! The food items for sale sound amazing! Check it all out down below, in pink.

- The Canadian Conference of Catholic Bishops have written four letters on Reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples. The link to these important pastoral letters may be find below, in blue.
- Check this one out! Now this sounds like a FUN FUNdraiser! The K of C are holding an important "Fix the Roof" Fundraiser in mid-March. Who doesn't like a nice meal out PLUS listening to live music made famous by the Beach Boys, Elvis, The Beatles, Buddy Holly, and more?! Read all the details below, and learn how to get your tickets, so you too can have some good fun AND help "Fix the Roof"!
- A reminder that St. Mary's Parish is hosting "Uniting in Silence", beginning at 11 am every Saturday morning until April 1 - where all are welcome to come sit in silence and unity with one another for 20 minutes. All the details can be found below.
Have a great weekend, and week ahead, everyone! Even though the temperatures are dipping a bit this week, if we have to spend more time inside, at least we have more great curling to watch this week as the men's Brier cranks up. The Riders continue to spruce up their player roster for this upcoming season and some interesting NHL hockey trades have occured this week. This is always a great time of faith, hope, and anticipation! Speaking of which, may your SECOND week of Lent also be filled with faith, hope and anticipation, as we continue together along our journey through this season of growth and renewal. Talk to you next week!
Continued Lenten Blessings,
Marlene

Development & Peace - Share Lent 2023
Week 2: March 5
Development and Peace: A Movement of Solidarity
To delegates at the 4th World Meeting of Popular Movements, Pope Francis said, “…you have the ability and the courage to create hope where there appears to be only waste and exclusion.”
These are the words that inspired the choice of “Create Hope” as a five-year guiding theme at Development and Peace ― Caritas Canada.
The courage to Create Hope is rooted in actions big and small. For to drive away anguish and despair, it is best to act. Every action we take has a positive effect on us, our neighbours, our great human family, our children and their descendants. What will you to this Lent to Create Hope? Join our campaign at devp.org/lent.
