Thank you for your interest in the Port of Olympia’s project to clean up and restore Budd Inlet. Contaminated sediment from historical industrial activities in Budd Inlet presents a threat to human health, negatively impacts the ecology of south Puget Sound, and impairs maritime operations and recreational boating. We are exploring a strategy to clean up and restore Budd Inlet in collaboration with local, state, federal, and Tribal partners.
What's Happening Now
The first phase of our strategy is focused on researching and identifying the best way to conduct and pay for cleanup and restoration of Budd Inlet. The Port Commission held a work session on the project on September 19, 2022. The agenda packet and meeting video are available on the Port’s website. On October 24, 2022, the Port Commission approved contracts to complete the investigation and studies needed to identify cleanup options and to secure funding.
Once a remedy has been selected, we will begin the process of designing the project and securing required permits. Project construction is planned to begin in 2025 and will take multiple years.
More information about the project can be found at www.portolympia.com/remediation.
