One woman. Two childhood loves. The dazzling place where it all began.
“An exciting, emotional page-turner.” —KRISTIN HARMEL, New York Times bestselling author
When Emma Jansen discovers that the grand Long Island estate where she grew up is set to be demolished, she can't help but return for one last visit. After all, it was a place filled with firsts: learning to ride a bike, sneaking a glass of champagne, falling in love.
But once Emma arrives at the storied mansion, she can't ignore the more complicated memories. Because that's not exactly where Emma grew up. Her mother and father worked for the family that owned the estate, and they lived over the garage like Audrey Hepburn's character in the film Sabrina. Emma never felt fully accepted, except by the family's grandson, Henry—a former love—and by the driver’s son, Leo—her best friend.
As plans for the property are put into motion and the three are together for the first time in over a decade, Emma finds herself caught between two worlds and two loves. And when the house reveals a shattering secret about her own family, she’ll have to decide what kind of life she really wants for herself now and who she wants to be in it.

10/18/22 - Bloomsbury USA - $18.00
I am technically Jewish (my mom is Jewish) but I was raised Christian and never really learned anything about Israel in school. I found this book very informative and well presented and think the author did a good job of trying to convey all the positions, while still advocating for his own. The main thing the book convinced me of is that the Israel/Palestine situation has broad implications for democracy as a whole and thus should be of interest to most Americans. -Jill Hendrix

8/8/23 - Riverhead Books- $28.00
From James McBride, author of the bestselling Oprah’s Book Club pick Deacon King Kong and the National Book Award–winning The Good Lord Bird, a novel about small-town secrets and the people who keep them
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store. When the state came looking for a deaf boy to institutionalize him, it was Chona and Nate Timblin, the Black janitor at Moshe’s theater and the unofficial leader of the Black community on Chicken Hill, who worked together to keep the boy safe.
As these characters’ stories overlap and deepen, it becomes clear how much the people who live on the margins of white, Christian America struggle and what they must do to survive. When the truth is finally revealed about what happened on Chicken Hill and the part the town’s white establishment played in it, McBride shows us that even in dark times, it is love and community—heaven and earth—that sustain us.
Bringing his masterly storytelling skills and his deep faith in humanity to The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, James McBride has written a novel as compassionate as Deacon King Kong and as inventive as The Good Lord Bird.

9/12/23 - Hachette Books - $30.00
An evocative, clear-eyed, and revealing memoir by Bernie Taupin, the lyrical master and long-time collaborator of Elton John
“I loved writing, I loved chronicling life and every moment I was cogent, sober, or blitzed, I was forever feeding off my surroundings, making copious notes as ammunition for future compositions. . . . The thing is good, bad, or indifferent I never stopped writing, it was as addictive as any drug.”
This is the memoir music fans have been waiting for. Half of one of the greatest creative partnerships in popular music, Bernie Taupin is the man who wrote the lyrics for Elton John, who conceived the ideas that spawned countless hits, and sold millions and millions of records. Together, they were a duo, a unit, an immovable object. Their extraordinary, half-century-and-counting creative relationship has been chronicled in biopics (like 2019's Rocketman) and even John's own autobiography, Me. But Taupin, a famously private person, has kept his own account of their adventures close to his chest, until now.
Written with honesty and candor, Scattershot allows the reader to witness events unfolding from Taupin's singular perspective, sometimes front and center, sometimes from the edge, yet always described vibrantly, with an infectious energy that only a vivid songwriter's prose could offer. From his childhood in the East Midlands of England whose imagination was sparked and forever informed by the distinctly American mythopoetics of country music and cowboy culture, to the glittering, star-studded fishbowl of ’70s and ’80s Beverly Hills, Scattershot is simultaneously a Tom Jones-like picaresque journey across a landscape of unforgettable characters, as well as a striking, first-hand account of a creative era like no other and one man’s experience at the core of it.
An exciting, multi-decade whirlwind told in a non-linear yet grounded narrative, Scattershot whizzes around the world as we ride shotgun with Bernie on his extraordinary life. We visit Los Angeles with him and Elton on the cusp of global fame. We spend time with him in Australia almost in residency at an infamous rock 'n' roll hotel in an endless blizzard of drugs. And we spend late, late night hours with John Lennon, with Bob Marley, and hanging with Frank Sinatra. And beyond the world of popular music, we witness memorable encounters with writers like Graham Greene, painters like Andy Warhol and Salvador Dali, and scores of notable misfits, miscreants, eccentrics, and geniuses, known and unknown. Even if they're not famous in their own right, they are stars on the page, and we discover how they inspired the indelible lyrics to songs such as “Tiny Dancer,” “Candle in the Wind,” “Bennie and The Jets,” and so many more.
Unique and utterly compelling, Scattershot will transport the reader across the decades and around the globe, along the way meeting some of the greatest creative minds of the 20th century, and into the vivid imaginings of one of music's most legendary lyricists.

Stone-in-the-Glen is a once-lovely town that has fallen on hard times. The beautiful Library burned down; the dazzling, dragon-slaying Mayor offers more speeches than action. When a mysterious neighbor begins leaving baked goods and other gifts around Stone-in-the-Glen, the Orphans start to explore the history and possibilities of their town. Then one day, a child goes missing from the Orphan House. At the Mayor’s accusation, all eyes turn to the Ogress who lives nearby—a stranger to the townsfolk (or so they think).

11/7/23 - Little, Brown and Company - $30.00
This will make a very special holiday gift!
Typically regarded as an intensely private person, there is nothing Mary J. Blige won't share in this revealing memoir. She unpacks the pain she has endured and the power of forgiveness in her experiences, offering wisdom and survival techniques for abused women.
I Want to Be Where the Song Is follows the release of Mary's Amazon Prime film, My Life, which explores her milestone 1994 album of the same name, but still does not share the intimate details of her childhood and journey her memoir gives voice to. I Want to Be Where the Song Is discloses the fullness of Mary's journey and reflections with a candidness previous interviews and documentaries have not touched on, painting a fuller picture of this iconic figure.
Mary's passion for this project is reflected in the beautiful package, which includes 40 photographs.

An outrageous, lacerating memoir of being raised by the most selfish generation into a very unproductive member of society. DEATH BY BOOMERS is a hilarious autobiographical account of Tim Dillon’s life, being raised by two Long Island boomers. Like most boomers his parents started out as long-haired hippies (selfish drug addicts!) who then became addicted to grievance mongering, paranoia, and fear! DEATH BY BOOMERS details the parenting style that made Tim a near perfect person: a closeted gay cocaine addict who enthusiastically supported the Iraq War and didn’t get a credit score until he was 36. (Also fat!) This book will be enjoyed by anyone raised by a boomer or anyone genuinely curious about the generation of people who endured the greatest hardships known to man: mall traffic and occasional lines at the grocery store. The boomers destroyed the earth, but first they destroyed their children! Take a trip down memory lane with Tim and his friends, as they navigate growing up with these proud, self-righteous boomers. You know them now as a tribe of Facebook warriors, but once upon a time, they ruled this land some call “the suburbs.” They were kings and queens of the drive thru. And if you walk down a street in Long Island you can still hear them, in a faint voice, telling the tale of someone who’s wronged them.

5/16/23 - William Morrow - $19.99
From the New York Times bestselling team of Beatriz Williams, Lauren Willig, and Karen White—a novel of money and secrets set among the famous summer mansions of Newport, Rhode Island, spanning over a century from the Gilded Age to the present day.
“Three stories elegantly intertwine in this clever and stylish tale of murder and family lies…This crackerjack novel offers three mysteries for the price of one.” —Publishers Weekly (starred review)
2019: Andie Figuero has just landed her dream job as a producer of Mansion Makeover, a popular reality show about restoring America’s most lavish historic houses. Andie has high hopes for her latest project: the once glorious but gently crumbling Sprague Hall in Newport, Rhode Island, summer resort of America’s gilded class—famous for the lavish “summer cottages” of Vanderbilts and Belmonts. But Andie runs into trouble: the reclusive heiress who still lives in the mansion, Lucia “Lucky” Sprague, will only allow the show to go forward on two conditions: One, nobody speaks to her. Two, nobody touches the mansion’s ruined boathouse.
1899: Ellen Daniels has been hired to give singing lessons to Miss Maybelle Sprague, a naive young Colorado mining heiress whose stepbrother John has poured their new money into buying a place among Newport’s elite. John is determined to see Maybelle married off to a fortune-hunting Italian prince, and Ellen is supposed to polish up the girl for her launch into society. But the deceptively demure Ellen has her own checkered past, and she’s hiding in plain sight at Sprague Hall.
1958: Lucia “Lucky” Sprague has always felt like an outsider at Sprague Hall. When she and her grandmother—the American-born Princess di Conti—fled Mussolini’s Italy, it seemed natural to go back to the imposing Newport house Nana owned but hadn’t seen since her marriage in 1899. Over the years, Lucky's lost her Italian accent and found a place for herself among the yachting set by marrying Stuyvesant Sprague, the alcoholic scion of her Sprague stepfamily. But one fateful night in the mansion’s old boathouse will uncover a devastating truth...and change everything she thought she knew about her past.
As the cameras roll on Mansion Makeover, the house begins to yield up the dark secrets the Spragues thought would stay hidden forever….

5/30/23 - Little, Brown and Company - $29.00
In the tradition of The Nightingale and Transcription, this is a searing epic based on the magnificent and true story of courageous Red Cross women.
“Urrea’s touch is sure, his exuberance carries you through . . . He is a generous writer, not just in his approach to his craft but in the broader sense of what he feels necessary to capture about life itself.” —Financial Times
In 1943, Irene Woodward abandons an abusive fiancé in New York to enlist with the Red Cross and head to Europe. She makes fast friends in training with Dorothy Dunford, a towering Midwesterner with a ferocious wit. Together they are part of an elite group of women, nicknamed Donut Dollies, who command military vehicles called Clubmobiles at the front line, providing camaraderie and a taste of home that may be the only solace before troops head into battle. After D-Day, these two intrepid friends join the Allied soldiers streaming into France. Their time in Europe will see them embroiled in danger, from the Battle of the Bulge to the liberation of Buchenwald. Through her friendship with Dorothy, and a love affair with a courageous American fighter pilot named Hans, Irene learns to trust again. Her most fervent hope, which becomes more precarious by the day, is for all three of them to survive the war intact. Taking as inspiration his mother’s own Red Cross service, Luis Alberto Urrea has delivered an overlooked story of women’s heroism in World War II. With its affecting and uplifting portrait of friendship and valor in harrowing circumstances, Good Night, Irene powerfully demonstrates yet again that Urrea’s “gifts as a storyteller are prodigious” (NPR).

5/23/23 - Doubleday - $29.00
The #1 New York Times bestselling author of While Justice Sleeps returns with another riveting and intricately plotted thriller, in which a blackmailed federal judge, a secret court and a brazen murder may lead to an unprecedented national crisis.
Supreme Court clerk Avery Keene is back, trying to get her feet on solid ground after unraveling an international conspiracy in While Justice Sleeps. But as the sparks of Congressional hearings and political skirmishes swirl around her, Avery is approached at a legal conference by Preston Davies, an unassuming young man and fellow law clerk to a federal judge in Idaho. Davies believes his boss, Judge Francesca Whitner, was being blackmailed in the days before she died. Desperate to understand what happened, he gives Avery a file, a burner phone, and a fearful warning that there are highly dangerous people involved.
Another shocking murder leads Avery to a list of names – all federal judges – and, alarmingly, all judges on the FISA Court (the United States Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court), also known as America’s "secret court." It is this body which grants permission to the government to wiretap Americans or spy on corporations suspected of terrorism. As Avery digs deeper, she begins to see a frightening pattern – and she worries that something far more sinister may be unfolding inside the nation’s third branch of government. With lives at stake, Avery must race the clock and an unexpected enemy to find the answer.
Drawn from today’s headlines and woven with her unique insider perspective, Stacey Abrams combines twisting plotlines, wry wit, and clever puzzles to create another immensely entertaining suspense novel.

From the Academy Award-winning actor and best-selling author: a novel about the making of a star-studded, multimillion-dollar superhero action film . . . and the humble comic books that inspired it. Funny, touching, and wonderfully thought-provoking, while also capturing the changes in America and American culture since World War II.
Part One of this story takes place in 1947. A troubled soldier, returning from the war, meets his talented five-year-old nephew, leaves an indelible impression, and then disappears for twenty-three years.
Cut to 1970: The nephew, now drawing underground comic books in Oakland, California, reconnects with his uncle and, remembering the comic book he saw when he was five, draws a new version with his uncle as a World War II fighting hero.
Cut to the present day: A commercially successful director discovers the 1970 comic book and decides to turn it into a contemporary superhero movie.
Cue the cast: We meet the film’s extremely difficult male star, his wonderful leading lady, the eccentric writer/director, the producer, the gofer production assistant, and everyone else on both sides of the camera.
Bonus material: Interspersed throughout are three comic books that are featured in the story—all created by Tom Hanks himself—including the comic book that becomes the official tie-in to this novel’s "major motion picture masterpiece."

From the New York Times–bestselling author of Cutting for Stone comes a stunning and magisterial epic of love, faith, and medicine, set in Kerala, South India, and following three generations of a family seeking the answers to a strange secret
The Covenant of Water is the long-awaited new novel by Abraham Verghese, the author of the major word-of-mouth bestseller Cutting for Stone, which has sold over 1.5 million copies in the United States alone and remained on the New York Times bestseller list for over two years.
Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time. From this unforgettable new beginning, the young girl—and future matriarch, known as Big Ammachi—will witness unthinkable changes over the span of her extraordinary life, full of joy and triumph as well as hardship and loss, her faith and love the only constants.
A shimmering evocation of a bygone India and of the passage of time itself, The Covenant of Water is a hymn to progress in medicine and to human understanding, and a humbling testament to the difficulties undergone by past generations for the sake of those alive today. It is one of the most masterful literary novels published in recent years.

A young woman pretends to be someone she isn’t in this stunning novel by the New York Times bestselling author of The Girls.
“Alex drained her wineglass, then her water glass. The ocean looked calm, a black darker than the sky. A ripple of anxiety made her palms go damp. It seemed suddenly very tenuous to believe that anything would stay hidden, that she could successfully pass from one world to another.”
Summer is coming to a close on the East End of Long Island, and Alex is no longer welcome.
A misstep at a dinner party, and the older man she’s been staying with dismisses her with a ride to the train station and a ticket back to the city.
With few resources and a waterlogged phone, but gifted with an ability to navigate the desires of others, Alex stays on Long Island and drifts like a ghost through the hedged lanes, gated driveways, and sun-blasted dunes of a rarefied world that is, at first, closed to her. Propelled by desperation and a mutable sense of morality, she spends the week leading up to Labor Day moving from one place to the next, a cipher leaving destruction in her wake.
Taut, propulsive, and impossible to look away from, Emma Cline’s The Guest is a spellbinding literary achievement.

Wonderland by Jennifer Hillier
|
|
I love Jennifer Hillier's books and when I saw that Wonderland, which was previously released only as an e-book, was being re-released as an audiobook and mass-market, I had to read it. I was not disappointed. It has Hillier's signature creepiness and depraved killers. How can an amusement park that has been around for decades and has an Elm Street and a clown and doll museum not be creepy? It is a sad look at what happens when a town depends on one thing for its survival and everyone important goes out of their way to make sure that Wonderland never gets any bad press. Bad things have happened in the past - young boys have gone missing - but they were glossed over and never really investigated. Then Vanessa Castro comes to Seaside, WA, as the new deputy chief of police and on her first day on the job a dead body is found on the midway and another young boy disappears. Escaping her own demons, she left her position as a Seattle detective to move her children to what she thought was a nice small town. She soon realizes that that there are a lot of secrets at Wonderland, and she ignores the way things have been done in the past and attacks the cases with a no holds barred attitude.

Killing Me by Michelle Gagnon
|
|
Killing Me is a laugh-out-loud book about serial killers. Yes. Really. A bevy of quirky characters, strong female leads, and a clever game of cat and mouse that takes a twist you could never imagine, makes this one of the best books I have read this year.

Closer by Sea by Perry Chafe
|
|
Closer by Sea was mesmerizing. I could not put down this amazing coming-of-age story that also included a mystery, some thrilling suspense scenes, and a spectacular look at life in a small Newfoundland fishing village in early 1990's at the end of its life as a fishing village. It was obvious that the author, who grew up in a similar village, cares deeply for the environment and the sea. Perfect for fans of William Kent Kreuger's This Tender Land.

One by One by Ruth Ware
|
|
Another locked room mystery. How could this one be any different than all of the others that seem to be popping up these days? Leave it to Ruth Ware to find a new way to put mystery and terror in something that has been done over and over. A beautiful setting in a chalet in the alps, a cast of characters there for a meeting/vacation who all but one still work for an internet company called snoop, and the chalet hostess and cook. Turns out the company is in the midst of a buyout offer and during a straw vote it is shown that all are not on the same side or on the side that they originally seemed to take. And then a severe avalanche strikes. They are totally isolated from the village and other chalets. No electricity, no internet, no phone signals and one person who was skiing alone is missing. Then, someone dies - murder or suicide is the question. There are secrets abound and as they are revealed you will jump back and forth thinking you know what will happen but you will most likely be wrong. Another great job by Ruth Ware.

Mothers' Instinct by Barbara Abel
|
|
Trigger Warning: This is about the accidental death of a 6 year old boy and how his parents, his parents' best friends, and his 6 year old best friend handle the sadness, guilt, and grief of his death. Having said that, this has everything I usually look for in a thriller. Tight plotting, great character development, short chapters that make you want to read just one more, and an ending that I would never have seen coming in a million years. And I can honestly say it is a book that I will remember for a long, long time. I picked this up because it is soon to be a major motion picture with Jessica Chastain and Jane Hathaway, and I can't wait to see if they stay true to the book or if they decide the American audience can't handle the ending - a la what was done with The Bad Seed.

The Murder Rule by Dervla McTiernan
|
|
Store pick: Hannah is a 3rd year law student in Maine. She is on a mission to seek revenge on the man who she believes killed her father. She wants him to stay in prison for life for a murder he swears he didn't commit. To do this she must transfer to UVA law school and talk her way on to the Innocence project - specifically on to the case of Michael Dandridge whose original conviction was overturned but who is on the verge of being tried again, unless the innocence project can convince the judge the original evidence was tainted. Hannah is sneaky, conniving, and bright - very bright - and she manages to to talk her way on to his case. Luckily, she also genuinely believes in justice. The Murder Rule was a riveting story told from two points of view - the 1994 diary of Laura who is Hannah's mother and Hannah's as she works to sabotage the project. The work of the law students to help prove people innocent was intriguing and very well explained (McTiernan is herself a lawyer). The ending was totally unexpected following some real heart stopping action.

Wrong Place Wrong Time by Gillian McAllister
|
|
I went into this totally blind, and boy am I glad I did because of I had read a blurb I may never have started it. As it turns out I was hooked from the beginning when Jen witnesses her teen aged son commit a murder outside their house, so once I realized what was happening in the story it was way too late to stop. This is a thriller unlike anything I have ever read. I am still amazed at how it was plotted and told in such an ingenious manner.

Things We Do in the Dark by Jennifer Hillier
|
|
Paris has just been arrested for her husband's murder. She should be worried that she will be convicted because, even though she dearly loved Jimmy, and would never have hurt him (or so she says), there is a ton of evidence against her. She is actually more concerned that once her picture is broadcast by the media that she will be recognized by someone from her past and will then be charged with two murders. Her past is told in several story lines and as we learn more about the people from her past and the present we realize that Paris learned as a young child what she needed to do to survive. And, while some of the things she did to survive were pretty bad they weren't nearly as bad as what was done to her. There are good people in this story, though sometimes they are hard to identify. And, justice does prevail though not in a way you could ever imagine.

Dirt Creek by Hayley Scrivenor
|
|
The small Australian town of Durton (Dirt Creek or Dirt Town to the locals) is the setting of this slow burn mystery about a missing child and her friends, family, and family friends. In a small town such as Durton everyone becomes a suspect and secrets long hidden are slowly revealed. The main story is told in first person by Esther's best friend Ronnie, and by another friend named Lewis. The story from the adults' point of view - Esther's mom, Ronnie's Mom and an incredibly determined police detective named Sarah Michaels - is told in third person. The Greek chorus of We - the other children in the town - help to highlight what it is like living in such a small and isolated community. I loved the unusual way Scrivenor told the story and her vivid descriptions of the heat, the dust, and the isolation. Definitely recommended for fans of The Dry.

Fake Dates and Mooncakes by Sher Lee
|
|
Dylan's life revolves around his family -- helping his aunt in their Chinese-Singaporian takeout restaurant, spending time with his cousins, remembering his mom. Then Theo comes into his life, with his private school and Ferrari and uber-wealthy family. The two are nothing alike, made even more obvious when Theo convinces Dylan to be his fake date at a family wedding and Dylan gets a look at the drama in Theo's family. But there's something real between them, and Dylan finds it harder and harder to ignore it. A super-cute romance with big YA Crazy Rich Asian vibes. And you'll want to be sure to have snacks handy because the food sounds amazing, and you'll definitely get hungry!

They Hate Each Other by Amanda Woody
|
|
Dylan and Jonah have a long history of despising each other. Their friends have long insisted that the boys secretly have the hots for each other, though. So Dylan and Jonah agree to fake date for a while, and then they can break up and go about their lives without their friends trying to get them together. Except while they're 'dating', they get to know each other -- that Jonah works too much because his sisters are everything to him and he doesn't want them to be taken away, and that Dylan has a brother he hasn't even talked to in years because of something that happened in their past. And as they open up to each other, they find that maybe friendship -- or more -- could actually be there after all. This is a poignant story that is as much about Dylan and Jonah's separate trials as it is about their romance, which makes it that much more satisfying when things work out for them.

The Boyfriend Candidate by Ashley Winstead
|
|
A fake-dating politics rom-com that is as much about the characters, shy elementary school librarian Alexis and foul-mouthed gubernatorial candidate Logan, learning to love themselves as it is about them figuring out they're right for each other. A great follow-up to Winstead's previous romance, Fool Me Once.

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros
|
|
War college for dragon riders. That should tell you everything you need to know about this book. And there is SO MUCH to love about it -- the concept, the story, the characters, the relationships. The main character, Violet, is an inspiration with the way she fights to prove herself -- to her mother, the general who forced her to join the Rider Quadrant; to her teachers, who think she has a lot to live up to because of her mother; to her peers, a lot of whom think she's too weak to last and/or want to kill her because of her mother; to the dragons, whom she has to impress if she wants a chance of surviving; and most especially to herself. I loved every minute of it and am already eagerly awaiting the next installment in the series.

The Stolen Crown by Abigail Owen

|
The Liar's Crown was a great series starter, and this second book is just as amazing. I was pulled right back in to Meren and Reven's story, with all of the action and romance I expected from the first book. I love Meren and her friends and her relationships with each of them (but especially Reven), and this book has some good twists to keep you interested. I can't wait for the next one!

Her Good Side by Rebekah Weatherspoon

After Bethany gets turned down when she asks her crush to the homecoming dance, she agrees to go with her best friend's new boyfriend Jacob. When Jacob gets dumped for the second time in as many months, he and Bethany agree that maybe they can help each other: They'll fake a relationship and give each other feedback to help in future endeavors while staying friends. But of course, they catch real feelings amid the epic make-out sessions. I absolutely love Bethany's self-confidence, and Jacob is such a sweetheart.

The Unstoppable Bridget Bloom by Allison L. Bitz
|
|
Bridget lives to perform, which is why she's going to a prestigious boarding school known for its music program. Except as much as her light shines while performing, Bridget isn't great at theory, so she doesn't actually get into the music program. And to top it off, the school's dean accuses Bridget of not being humble and tells her she can't perform. So Bridget sets out to prove her wrong. Not singing is hard at first, but ultimately Bridget learns that maybe there are other things she's good at, both music-related and not. I love the characters in this story that is as much (if not more) about discovering the importance of friendship as it is about self-discovery.

Imogen, Obviously by Becky Albertalli
|
|
While Imogen is straight, she is definitely an ally. She has a queer little sister and queer best friends. But since one of her friends, Lili, went to college and acquired a circle of queer friends (who all seem amazing on social media), Imogen isn't sure where she fits anymore. And things get even more confusing when Imogen visits Lili and meets Tessa...who, along with all of Lili's other friends, thinks Imogen is bi. And now, with possible crush feelings for Tessa, Imogen doesn't know what to think. More of a questioning story than a coming out story, this will resonate with anyone who might have realized that they've been put in the wrong box -- by society, by friends and family, by themselves. And Albertalli has a true gift for character's voices that make them really come off the page.

Meet Me at the Lake by Carley Fortune
|
|
Fern and Will met 10 years ago, when they spent the day together exploring Toronto and forging a connection that was more real than either of them had felt before, despite being so brief. But the timing wasn't right, so they agreed to meet a year later -- except Will never showed. Now, Fern is running her mom's resort after a tragedy upended her life, something she never wanted to do. And then Will shows up. Neither Fern nor Will are the same people they were 10 years ago, but they still have an undeniable attraction. Will has secrets, though, and is leaving at the end of the summer, and Fern isn't sure she can take another heartbreak. This book packs an emotional punch much like Fortune's first book. Readers of Every Summer After won't be disappointed, and fans of Emily Henry will love Carley Fortune.

The Wishing Game by Meg Shaffer
|
|
Lucy knows about impossible wishes. She also knows the power of books as escapism -- both figuratively and literally, since she ran away to her favorite author's house as a teenager. Now, though, her impossible wish is to be a family and a home for one of her students who recently lost both of his parents. And then Clock Island -- the setting of her favorite books and the author's actual home -- comes calling again in the form of a contest that might just grant all of Lucy's wishes. This book is a lovely homage to the books you loved as a child -- whether you were a fan of runaway adventures, wishes made and granted, weird and magical places, riddles and games, clever masterminds with haunted pasts -- you'll see notes of many old favorites. But it doesn't remind me of any particular children's book or series as much as it reminds me of the feeling of reading a favorite book as a child, a particular kind of nostalgia reserved for a story that could transport you when you most needed to be elsewhere. The ability to capture that feeling gives this book a special place in my heart already.
