Out and About in the Community - Engaging with Families with Cultural Sensitivity
Last week, Asoka and Jessica attended Oaklynn Special School’s Whānau Day, continuing a long-standing Disability Connect tradition. Oaklynn Special School has a vibrant, multi-ethnic student community, and the school works closely with families to provide hands-on support tailored to each student’s disability-specific needs. This event continues to grow bigger and better each year.
Pictured is Asoka with Lauina, mother of an 11-year-old student at Oaklynn Special School. Their conversation flowed easily, and Lauina shared that her name in Samoan represents strength, leadership, and community service—an apt description of this wonderfully resilient mum.
It is always a pleasure to be part of Whānau Day. A big thank you to the Oaklynn Special School principal and staff for including Disability Connect in this community event and for their warm hospitality.

Topics included disability benefits, eligibility criteria, making a complaint, and what to do if declined.
We are unable to record these sessions or share notes, but will provide a summary of key questions and responses soon through our Facebook page and on our website. Stay tuned for another Woe to Go later this year.

Parent Support Group and Chinese Family Disability Support Group
Parent Support Group:
Our first term activities have ranged from a Valentine’s Day themed social gathering to a session that empowered parents to treat themselves with more kindness, recognising the value they bring to their children. Make sure you join us for the next session, where we’ll be having a group music therapy session. Details are listed below
Chinese Family Disability Support Group:
In March, we came together for a deeply meaningful workshop, “Nourishing Our Nervous System: Self-Care for Caregivers.” Many families resonated with the idea that caring for a child with disabilities can carry invisible layers of trauma and disenfranchised grief—feelings that are often unspoken and unseen. Through the lens of Polyvagal Theory, parents began to understand how their nervous systems shape their emotions, fatigue, and responses to stress.
A heartfelt thank you to our amazing speaker, Lee Tempest from VisAble, whose thoughtful and compassionate sharing created a safe and supportive space for learning and reflection.
What stood out most was the response from families. Many shared that the strategies felt practical and empowering—something they could gently bring into their daily lives. Some expressed their intention to practise these tools regularly, and even to pass them on to their children, including siblings.
In a community where conversations like this are still rare, it was especially meaningful to see so many Chinese families come together, learn, and feel seen.

Disability Support Services - Upcoming Changes April 2026
From 1 April 2026, people who use flexible funding through DSS will have more choice and control over how they use their funding for disability-related supports.
From 1 April:
- People’s allocated budgets for flexible funding will stay the same as they are now
- The purchasing rules for flexible funding will be removed
- Flexible funding must still be used in line with its purpose set out in people’s plans
- A small number of items will remain prohibited or require pre-approval
- There will be more support for people to plan and manage their flexible funding.
- People who already receive flexible funding don’t need to do anything to get ready for these changes.
These April changes build on earlier improvements to Disability Support Services, including the nationally consistent assessment approach introduced in February 2026, and reflect feedback from the disability community.
For more information about the April flexible funding changes, visit the DSS website: Flexible funding changes | Disability Support Services

Whangarei Accessible Housing Trust : Help us to help you
The Whangarei Accessible Housing Trust has been housing people aged under 65 with physical disabilities in affordable, accessible homes in Whangarei and Auckland for 20 years.
The Government is currently rolling out funding to build new social housing, and the Trust is preparing an application. As part of this process, it is seeking community support to gather up-to-date and relevant data to strengthen its application. This information will help improve the chances of securing funding for accessible housing across the region, from the Far North to Auckland.
The Trust is looking to better understand:
-
Which areas have the greatest need for new housing
-
The sizes of homes required
-
The level of disability among those in need, which can significantly limit other housing options
Community members can support this initiative by completing a short survey: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/Z3CT285

Nurothreads is a new community-led project in development, focused on creating sensory-friendly, adaptive, and safety-integrated clothing for autistic and sensory-sensitive people.
Nurothreads was born from lived experience and the everyday
challenges many families face — from sensory distress caused by clothing to
safety concerns such as wandering or elopement. Their goal is to design clothing
that supports comfort, emotional regulation, and safety through thoughtful
features such as soft, tag‑free fabrics and a discreet reinforced pocket for
families who use tracking devices.
Currently in its early stages, Nurothreads is seeking input from parents, carers, and professionals to ensure the clothing reflects real needs and experiences.

Share Your Expertise to Support Aotearoa Whānau: CPVA Professionals Survey Now Open
Professionals across Aotearoa New Zealand are invited to contribute to a survey exploring Child-to-Parent Violence and Abuse (CPVA)—an often hidden and misunderstood issue affecting families and whānau.
CPVA involves children (under 18 or adult children) using violence or abusive behaviour toward parents, caregivers, grandparents, or siblings. Families experiencing CPVA frequently feel isolated, ashamed, and unsure where to seek support.
Insights from professionals will help highlight the impact of CPVA, identify service gaps and challenges, and inform policy, training, and advocacy. Findings will contribute to a publicly available report supporting stronger responses to CPVA.
Survey details
Open: 2 March – 13 April 2026
Confidential and secure No personal information collected
