5 quick things –

Hi, gorgeous!

After spending less than a week in NYC I landed back down in Miami yesterday.🗽✈️🌴This is where my video studio is, so I'm here to record a bunch of new meditation videos, finish up a new EFF This! website, and work on my book launch plan. I've managed to create a work space here that is super productive for me, and I'm really grateful for that.

Turns out what I need most to Get Shit Done™ is long stretches of solitude. Shared workspaces are like the enemy of my output; routine is my biggest ally. Hoping you are getting whatever you need to do the work you want to do, too. Or, if you don't feel like doing work, hope you are soaking up the relaxation vibez.✌🏽

Okay, on to your five things for the week. ⏬

MUST READS
1. leave me alone (and then talk soothing to me)

Speaking of, well, desperately craving time to myself to get work done:

A woman's greatest enemy? A lack of time to herself. I feel this so deeply . . . "The chores of a day, killing the dreams of a lifetime." Ugh. Does this resonate with you?

On a lighter note, this interactive piece is suuuuper cool: The app that tucks me in at night.

On the surface it's about the author's obsession with the woman who voices the Calm app. But it's really about . . . soothing voices? Our relationship to sound in the internet age? (It's interactive; be sure to play the sound bits. They will tickle your ears in a really lovely way.)

2. get your nerd on 🤓

Perhaps the best $9 I have spent was on these nerdy blue-blocker glasses to wear when looking at any screens at night (tv, phones, etc.) They are the ugliest, cheapest, and by far the most effective blueblockers on the market. (You can spend more to get cuter ones; they just don't work as well.)

Why block blue light at night? For the sake of your sleep, dear friend! 😴 Blue light hugely interferes with our melanin production, especially right before sleep. Not to mention, blue light is also bad for our eyesight and our skin. (Do yourself a favor and make sure your nighttime lightbulbs are blue-light free, too.)

3. salt baths are so good for you 🧂🛁

In my many years of taking salt baths, I have learned some cool things about them:

  • The more salt, the longer the water stays the same temperature.🌡️(Lots of salt means your bath will stay warm for a looooong time. Win!)
  • And, the more salt, the less wrinkles (aka prune-ish fingers and toes)
  • If you don't have / do baths, make a salt scrub instead
  • Different salts are good for different things. I use all of these at once, plus essential oils:
  • Himalayan pink salts (hydration, detoxifying, skin soothing)
  • epsom salts (aches & pains, better sleep)
  • magnesium flakes (relaxing muscles, headaches, inflammation)
  • baking soda (preventing infection, healing)

Speaking of salt, I'm obsessed with using this sea salt scalp scrub once a week or so. It's way better (and less toxic) than the Neutrogena detox shampoo I've been using for the past fifty years or so.

4. my book is rad; will you pre-order it?

I haven't given myself a shameless plug in a while, so if you don't mind it: pretty please pre-order my book. ☺️ (Or if you already did, will you share with someone you think might also like it?) 🙏

Why do you see authors like me asking for this? Because pre-orders make an enormous difference in the success of a book in our algorithm-driven age.

And: the book is quite awesome! Packed full of tips. Gorgeously illustrated. And, dare I say, really fun to read? (Be sure to email your receipt to effthisbook@gmail.com for free stuff!)

5. birthday twins 🎂

My birthday is next week–July 30th–and I share my bday with:

  • My friend Emily Griggs (with me in the photo, circa 2003-ish? I can offer no explanation for that pic other than to say it was in Vegas.)
  • Brad Frost: a friend who is known to web geeks as the creator of Atomic Design.
  • Henry Ford: titan of industry, super weirdo and among other things, the founder of Forlândia, that weird-ass failure of a planned community thousands of miles inside the Amazon rainforest.
  • Terry Crews: former NFL player, vocal advocate of women's rights, and the hilarious Lt. Jeffords on Brooklyn 99.

Do you know who you share your birthday with? Is this a weird thing to keep track of? 🤷🏻‍♀️

In NYC, many offices have "summer Fridays" where they close at lunchtime on Friday so that people can start the weekend early. I'm here for that.

Hope you are getting a chance to really enjoy the slow-er days of summer, before everything ramps up again for the fall. Be sure to get outside this weekend!

Love,
