Get excited about Anti poaching's 2020 unexpected award!

    Dear Friends and Supporters,

This month, we got a big surprise! Anti poaching team and rangers in Pu Mat National Park are nominated for Figure of the Year finalists - 2020 VTV Awards

All efforts and hardships were recorded and won audiences' hearts. Since establishment in 2018, the team have destroyed almost 10.000 traps, save thousand lives of wild animals in the forest. But their mission does not stop there, we keep going on until Vietnam forests are safe! Once again, congratulations on their silent job being honored!

Rescue

Wildlife trade in the hotspot of Vietnam is still complicated despite the release of new directive no. 29 from the Minister addressing crucial issues on illegal wildlife trade as part of the country’s efforts to prevent future pandemic. Four confiscated cases with nine individuals happened in August including one sunda slow loris, one leopard cat, one pygmy slow loris and six sunda pangolins. Sadly, we lost the leopard cat, some of the other animals are quite weak and being under our medical vet care at Pu Mat rescue centre.

Six pangolins rescued on 31 August, 2020

Pangolins, you are not alone! SVW working with Pu Mat National Park, the Environmental Police Department and the Office of Police Investigation Agency of Nam Dan District, Nghe An Province confiscated and rescued six pangolins from illegal trading. Three of them are so weak and need special caring from our vet and keepers in Pu Mat National Park.

Rescue a leopard cat on 11 August 2020

This cat was voluntarily handed over by a local restaurant in Nghe An province, and under poor condition. Her left instep was injured by trap and swelling. It’s hard for her to move around. Besides, her face has been wounded. We lost her after three days of treatment.

Both of the Sunda Slow Loris and Pygmy Slow Loris rescued on 4 and 18 August are in good conditions now.

Rehabilitation

Remember the pangolin pup? Our little pup turns two month old already, still drinks mom's milk and his favorite places are in mom's embrace and on mom's tail. "Mom! I am so excited about the world. Let's eat a lot and we come back to the wild together!!!" We are longing to see you guys coming back home soon (in the next few months maybe). Stay healthy until then!

In another naturalistic enclosure, two Chinese pangolins are being paired together. They share one bed box and seem to be happy. We will get you notified when having some good news. Most of the other animals are in good condition as the enrichment activities are going well by our dedicated keepers, even some types of fruits are being planted in our garden to provide the animals with various fresh food.

Education & outreach - Making the most of National Park experiences

School year is back! Wondering what educators have done during the last summer break?

One more online conservation class with three sessions was operated for 25 secondary students in Hanoi. They showed great interest and want to expand the class for an increasing number of students. Kids also want to raise a campaign about wildlife in Hanoi later this year.

So far, more trainings and cooperations have been done. SVW education and outreach team is in accompanion with Cuc Phuong National Park in building and implementing educational programs for students of various ages to value nature and wildlife. We are ready to welcome you back with alive hands on learning and activities.

Research

Sometimes many of you see wild animals being sold on social media channels. You did try your best and even though you all understand wildlife trading is illegal and so cruel, it is beyond your and our control until... this moment. Since our research of online illegal wildlife trade started, we found photos of at least 26 species of small carnivores online. Sellers often post the news on closed or secret groups, which makes the investigation even harder. This month, we found five more facebook accounts having signs of violation related to the owston civet species. All cases found are reported to ENV and recorded to our data. This step is indispensable in our efforts to stopping the online illegal wildlife trading.

And here comes the other news about our scale friends - pangolin! Research team are making significant progress in finding new material to attach on pangolin scales for camera tracking activitiy after the release. This time, the material seems to be improved, more durable and easier to attach. We are still doing more tests but hopefully with this change, pangolins after coming back to the forest will be able to be tracked for a very long time, which also help us in understanding their lives in the wild.

Building capacity for rangers of Cuc Phuong national park

SVW has been supported the Cuc Phuong National Park to organise the training on 21 and 22 September 2020 for 32 rangers of Cuc Phuong National Park. The training course focuses to provide knowledge on law related to forestry and wildlife. The rangers got the most updated law from National Forest Protection Department. They also learnt how to collect the evidences and record the information from the cases. As the new change of management board, Cuc Phuong national park has been paying more attention to protecting forest since early 2020. We hope the training will help those 32 rangers to continue doing their patrol to combat illegal poaching.

August is still among peak months of hunting in the forest. As a result, the anti-poaching team and rangers detected many illegal cases. Active camps and traps are found in some areas. We destroyed 214 traps and 15 tents, confiscated one Vietnamese three-striped box turtle and released the animal back to the wild immediately. 12 people were expelled from the forest, 01 wildlife hunter was recorded file, 01 hunter using alcohol guns was recorded minutes of warning, however, 02 people with handmade guns escaped. This is hunting season! We must prepare good health and teamwork for long patrol time.
