National High Magnetic Field Laboratory researchers decipher cause of solid-state battery breakdowns

A team at the Florida State University-headquartered National High Magnetic Field Laboratory has discovered how tiny needles of metallic lithium known as dendrites form during solid-state battery use, which can lead to short circuits and battery failure. The team’s research, which was published in Nature Materials, provides a clearer understanding of dendrite formation and could help develop more reliable and efficient solid-state batteries for various applications, including electric vehicles, energy systems, medical devices and more. Read more ...
