5/11/21 - Bloomsbury USA: 2021 - $40.00
From celebrated historian John Ferling, the underexplored history of the second half of the Revolutionary War, when, after years of fighting, American independence often seemed beyond reach.
It was 1778, and the recent American victory at Saratoga had netted the U.S a powerful ally in France. Many, including General George Washington, presumed France's entrance into the war meant independence was just around the corner.
Meanwhile, having lost an entire army at Saratoga, Great Britain pivoted to a “southern strategy.” The army would henceforth seek to regain its southern colonies, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia, a highly profitable segment of its pre-war American empire. Deep into 1780 Britain's new approach seemed headed for success as the U.S. economy collapsed and morale on the home front waned. By early 1781, Washington, and others, feared that France would drop out of the war if the Allies failed to score a decisive victory that year. Sir Henry Clinton, commander of Britain's army, thought “the rebellion is near its end.” Washington, who had been so optimistic in 1778, despaired: “I have almost ceased to hope.”
Winning Independence is the dramatic story of how and why Great Britain-so close to regaining several southern colonies and rendering the postwar United States a fatally weak nation ultimately failed to win the war. The book explores the choices and decisions made by Clinton and Washington, and others, that ultimately led the French and American allies to clinch the pivotal victory at Yorktown that at long last secured American independence.

9/28/21 - Grand Central Publishing: 2021 - $28.00
From the author of The Longest Ride and The Return comes a novel about the enduring legacy of first love, and the decisions that haunt us forever.
1996 was the year that changed everything for Maggie Dawes. Sent away at sixteen to live with an aunt she barely knew in Ocracoke, a remote village on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, she could think only of the friends and family she left behind . . . until she meets Bryce Trickett, one of the few teenagers on the island. Handsome, genuine, and newly admitted to West Point, Bryce gradually shows her how much there is to love about the wind-swept beach town—and introduces her to photography, a passion that will define the rest of her life.
By 2019, Maggie is a renowned travel photographer. At thirty-seven, she splits her time between running a successful gallery in New York and photographing remote locations around the world. But this year she finds herself unexpectedly grounded over Christmas, struggling to come to terms with a sobering medical diagnosis. Increasingly dependent on a young assistant, she finds herself becoming close to him.
As they count down the last days of the season together, she begins to tell him the story of another Christmas, decades earlier—and the love that set her on a course she never could have imagined.
We are advocating to host Nicholas Sparks for an event, but it is too early to know at this point. For now, preorder the book!

Many Homeowners Associations have a bad rep. They sometimes do good but are often helmed by a group of power hungry, greedy busy bodies who make it their mission in life to get the entire neighborhood under their control. A revenge killer uses this to his advantage as the blame for the murders and attempted murders that begin to occur in developments on an island off the SC coast are thought to be related to vicious feuds among several island HOAs all under the management of Ted Welch. When Ted joins forces with retired Coast Guard officer Kylie Kane the investigation begins in earnest. A funny, but often true look at HOAs, a smart investigation, and a thrilling chase and hunt for a killer with a little romance thrown in make for a great read. -Nancy M., store volunteer

He saw what you did.
He knows who you are…
From the New York Times bestselling author of Pieces of Her and The Silent Wife, an electrifying standalone thriller.
AN ORDINARY LIFE…
Leigh Collier has worked hard to build what looks like a normal life. She’s an up-and-coming defense attorney at a prestigious law firm in Atlanta, would do anything for her sixteen-year-old daughter Maddy, and is managing to successfully coparent through a pandemic after an amicable separation from her husband Walter.
HIDES A DEVASTATING PAST...
But Leigh’s ordinary life masks a childhood no one should have to endure … a childhood tarnished by secrets, broken by betrayal, and ultimately destroyed by a brutal act of violence.
BUT NOW THE PAST IS CATCHING UP…
On a Sunday night at her daughter’s school play, she gets a call from one of the firm's partners who wants Leigh to come on board to defend a wealthy man accused of multiple counts of rape. Though wary of the case, it becomes apparent she doesn't have much choice if she wants to keep her job. They're scheduled to go to trial in one week. When she meets the accused face-to-face, she realizes that it’s no coincidence that he’s specifically asked for her to represent him. She knows him. And he knows her. More to the point, he may know what happened over twenty years ago, and why Leigh has spent two decades avoiding her past.
AND TIME IS RUNNING OUT.
Suddenly she has a lot more to lose than this case. The only person who can help is her younger, estranged sister Callie—the last person Leigh would ever want to drag into this after all they’ve been through. But with the life-shattering truth in danger of being revealed, she has no choice...

7/13/21 - Anchor Books: 2021 - $16.00
Ron Rash has long been a revered presence in the landscape of American letters. A virtuosic novelist, poet, and story writer, he evokes the beauty and brutality of the land, the relentless tension between past and present, and the unquenchable human desire to be a little bit better than circumstances would seem to allow.
In these ten stories, Rash, "a gorgeous, brutal writer" (Richard Price) working at the height of his powers, has created a mesmerizing look at the imperfect world around us, from the severing of ties to the natural world in the relentless hunt for profit to the destruction of body and soul with pills meant to mute our pain.
Rash’s stories are unforgettable—"Baptism" was chosen by Roxane Gay for inclusion in The Best American Short Stories 2018, and "Neighbors" was selected by Jonathan Lethem for The Best American Mystery Stories 2019. And in revisiting Serena Pemberton, Rash updates his bestselling parable of greed run amok as his deliciously vindictive heroine returns to the North Carolina wilderness she left scarred and desecrated to make one final effort to kill the child that threatens all she has accomplished.

7/6/21 - Riverhead Books: 2021 - $27.00
“This house, this place, knows all my secrets.”
It is a perfect July morning, and Elle, a fifty-year-old happily married mother of three, awakens at “The Paper Palace”—the family summer place which she has visited every summer of her life. But this morning is different: last night Elle and her oldest friend Jonas crept out the back door into the darkness and had sex with each other for the first time, all while their spouses chatted away inside. Now, over the next twenty-four hours, Elle will have to decide between the life she has made with her genuinely beloved husband, Peter, and the life she always imagined she would have had with her childhood love, Jonas, if a tragic event hadn’t forever changed the course of their lives. As Heller colors in the experiences that have led Elle to this day, we arrive at her ultimate decision with all its complexity. Tender yet devastating, The Paper Palace considers the tensions between desire and dignity, the legacies of abuse, and the crimes and misdemeanors of families.

Based on a true story, The War Nurse is a sweeping historical novel by USA Today bestselling author Tracey Enerson Wood that takes readers on an unforgettable journey through WWI France.
She asked dozens of young women to lay their lives on the line during the Great War. Can she protect them?
Superintendent of Nurses Julia Stimson must recruit sixty-four nurses to relieve the battle-worn British, months before American troops are ready to be deployed. She knows that the young nurses serving near the front lines of will face a challenging situation, but nothing could have prepared her for the chaos that awaits when they arrive at British Base Hospital 12 in Rouen, France. The primitive conditions, a convoluted, ineffective system, and horrific battle wounds are enough to discourage the most hardened nurses, and Julia can do nothing but lead by example—even as the military doctors undermine her authority and make her question her very place in the hospital tent.
When trainloads of soldiers stricken by a mysterious respiratory illness arrive one after the other, overwhelming the hospital's limited resources, and threatening the health of her staff, Julia faces an unthinkable choice—to step outside the bounds of her profession and risk the career she has fought so hard for, or to watch the people she cares for most die in her arms.

A Southern story of friendship forged by books and bees, when the timeless troubles of growing up meet the murky shadows of World War II.
Deep in the tobacco land of North Carolina, nothing's been the same since the boys shipped off to war and worry took their place. Thirteen-year-old Lucy Brown is precocious and itching for adventure. Then Allie Bert Tucker wanders into town, an outcast with a puzzling past, and Lucy figures the two of them can solve any curious crime they find—just like her hero, Nancy Drew.
Their chance comes when a man goes missing, a woman stops speaking, and an eccentric gives the girls a mystery to solve that takes them beyond the ordinary. Their quiet town, seasoned with honeybees and sweet tea, becomes home to a Nazi prisoner-of-war camp. More men go missing. And together, the girls embark on a journey to discover if we ever really know who the enemy is.
Lush with Southern atmosphere, All The Little Hopes is the story of two girls growing up as war creeps closer, blurring the difference between what's right, what's wrong, and what we know to be true.

Get the Hell Out of Debt: The Proven 3-Phase Method That Will Radically Shift Your Relationship to Money by Erin Skye Kelly
|
|
Anyone interested in achieving any sort of personal transformation (fixing their money habits, eating habits, exercise habits, etc.) should read the 10 success principles outlined in Chapter 2. Erin has a wonderful blunt style reminiscent of Dave Ramsey but that connects better with women. The details of the book do contain a lot of Canadian/international info, which could be a plus or a minus depending on your point of view, but all the standard US info is covered as well.

The Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix
|
|
It seems like an oxymoron, but The Final Girl Support group is a delightfully dark and very suspenseful thriller, both funny and really scary. It tells the story of 6 vastly different women survivors from horrors we can only imagine who as final girls have been in a support group for 16 years. And, then they start dying! The book pays homage to the slasher films of the 80s and 90s and even if you werent a fan of them, if you like Mission Impossible type escapes, and thrillers which go in totally unforeseeable directions (several times) then you will love this book.

Falling by T.J. Newman
|
|
Falling lives up to its hype and then some. It has been described as a roller coaster of a thriller and I totally agree with that description. Only this is not a standard roller coaster. This one reaches from flight 416 down to the earth where the pilot, Captain Bill Hoffmans family is being held hostage and the action goes back and forth on it like the speed of light. When you start this heart stopping thriller you better plan on it being a non-stop flight as you will not want to stop in the middle.

The Wife Who Knew Too Much by Michele Campbell
|
|
Just because you love someone with all of your heart does not mean they love you back or are even worthy of your love. Tabitha is very young and naive when she first meets Connor and falls madly in love with him. But she is older and shouldnt be so naive (considering what happened with her first husband) when Connor comes back into her life years later. But, obviously in Tabithas case love is truly blind. The diary entry at the beginning of the book from Connors extremely rich dead wife sets the stage for an intriguing domestic thriller that will have you wishing you could just tell Tabitha to run!

Radha & Jai's Recipe for Romance by Nisha Sharma
|
|
I can be picky when it comes to YA, but I absolutely loved this book. It's a book about family, and tradition, and finding connection in new ways. It's about a boy who's hiding from what he really wants, and a girl trying to learn who she is all over again. It describes dance in such a beautifully genuine way - I could just see the choreography coming to life in my mind as I read, and I found myself googling kathak videos and falling in love with a style that I hadn't known existed. The cooking metaphors were great, the anxiety rep was spot on, and Radha and Jai had the sweetest romance. At the end of the day, it's a book about finding the pieces of yourself that you've lost, and picking up some new ones along the way - and that's what I love about it most of all.

Steel Fear by Brandon Webb
|
|
Navy SEAL sniper Finn is ordered to the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln to hitch a ride home from the Persian Gulf, following a failed mission to capture or kill a terror cell. Worse yet, on the same night a slaughter of civilians takes place just a short distance away from their target location and its unclear how or if these events are connected. Immediately upon boarding the ship, Finn senses that things are not as they should be. Leadership is weak. Morale is low. A rescue chopper went down just a few days before and all hands were lost. Worse, once Finn arrives, more crewmembers start disappearing. At first these disappearances look like suicide, but Finn and others suspect something far more sinister is at work. Possibly even a serial killer on board. Finn, by nature a loner and quiet observer and as a newcomer to the ship, immediately falls under suspicion. Worse yet, since the failed mission, Finn has been experiencing gaps in his memory, which coincide with these disappearances. Using his finely honed senses of observation and patience, Finn starts putting together the picture of what is going on and works to solve the mystery of these killings. At times partnering with others while simultaneously being suspected by them, Finn works to sort out where the truth lies. This is a strong thriller and a compulsive page-turner. Well conceived and executed, you will lose sleep over this one!

Sleeping Bear by Connor Sullivan
|
|
I'm not gonna lie. I picked this up because it seemed so implausible that I just had to see if the author could pull it off. Cassie Gale is an ex-Army Ranger still grieving from the death of her husband. Seeking solitude, she and her adopted military dog make the long drive from Montana to Alaska where Cassie has accepted a new job. She meets and joins up with a fellow wanderer on the way and heads off some crude roughnecks along her journey. Then on her first night alone in the wilderness after departing ways with her fellow wanderer she vanishes, leaving behind all of her possessions and a badly wounded dog. When Cassie wakes up from a drug-induced sleep, she finds herself a prisoner in a secret Russian facility. Cassies father, a Montana rancher with a dark hidden past as a former American agent, rushes to Alaska and is determined that Cassies disappearance was due to foul play and not the accident the authorities are convinced is the case. As he searches for his daughter and relentlessly digs for the truth, he is also running into unfinished business from his past. Not only was I pleasantly surprised that the author was able to build the story around these events, but that he did so in such a compelling and intricate way. This story was a thrill ride that captured me and kept me up late at night turning pages until the very end. Connor Sullivan has crafted an outstanding espionage thriller. I look forward to the next installment and hope we see more of Cassie and her dad.

City Problems by Steve Goble

Ed Runyan is an ex-NYPD detective who left the big apple for the relative quiet of rural Ohio after a particularly gruesome case involving the brutal murder of a young woman. Now it seems his past has caught up with him when he finds himself in a case of another missing young woman on his own turf in the quiet fields of Ohio. The girl, Megan Beemer was reported missing from the Columbus area and was last seen at a party where a high school band from Ed's area was performing. Between the band and the local kids who were or may have been at the same event, and with the help of a woman detective from Columbus, Ed has to unfold the story of who was at the party and how they might have interacted with Megan. When Megan's body is found in a local creek, Ed has to struggle with his past and the demons that have stayed with him from the earlier murder in NY which has been the center of his nightmares for years. Ed Runyon is a damaged character, but one who shows his human side in his empathy and depth of commitment to solve this crime and find justice for the victim. We can only hope we'll see more of Ed Runyon. This one was a great read!
