Lifelong Learning Institute

|
It’s that time of year when we give thanks for all our blessings including good friends. Participating in UW-Green Bay’s Lifelong Learning Institute is one of those blessings. Our ability to keep learning across our lifetime—not just in our early years—is a gift. Bring someone with you to an event or a class. Talk to your friends about the topics you have learned about in LLI classes. We know the best marketing tool is word-of-mouth (WOM), a strange term dating back to the sixteenth century. WOM is one of the most powerful forms of advertising as the vast majority of consumers trust their friends’ recommendations over traditional media.
At this thankful time, I want to send a personal thank you to the LLI leadership team—all those individuals who have given their time supporting LLI on the curriculum, marketing, social, finance and technology committees. Many of you have served multiple terms in your roles, and it does not go unnoticed. For those of you who have not yet joined in this volunteer effort, it is never too late. We would always love to have your ideas!
Thanks, too, to our UW-Green Bay staff. Thanks for all your work managing through this fall semester’s surprises. The old adage is true. It’s never as easy as it is supposed to be.
Hope you had a wonderful holiday season!

Share Your Enthusiasm for LLI |
There are two key ways to share your enthusiasm for LLI.
|
|
|
|
|
Gift Membership |
|
Consider giving an LLI membership for a birthday, retirement or other special occasion. There is no age requirement or pre-requisite to join LLI; only a desire to learn new things and meet new people. Gift certificates are available for annual and semester membership or an amount of your choosing. Call the office to purchase a gift certificate at (920) 465-2356.
|
|
Guest Pass
|
|
Bring a friend to a class. A guest pass may be used for classes which are not at capacity. Call the office to be sure that space is available and to notify the coordinator that a guest will be coming at (920) 465-2356.

Curriculum Committee
The LLI Spring 2024 semester will soon be underway! We have 188 courses being offered in a wide variety of categories, thanks to the efforts of the LLI Curriculum Committee and many other volunteers in the LLI program.
The LLI Curriculum Committee works behind the scenes to recruit presenters, develop curriculum and schedule courses for each semester in the LLI program. The committee includes LLI volunteers from the Green Bay area, as well as our UW-Green Bay partner campuses at Manitowoc, Sheboygan and Marinette.
We could use your help! The Curriculum Committee is always looking for more volunteers to help us develop our curriculum. Recruiting presenters to teach courses is easy and very fulfilling. New committee members are mentored and trained, and any amount of participation is appreciated.
Currently the Curriculum Committee meetings take place via Zoom, usually at 8 a.m. on the first Monday of the month, with an exception around the holidays. Our upcoming meetings will take place on January 8, February 5 and March 4. Our January meeting will be the kickoff for Fall 2024 recruiting discussions.
|If you are interested in joining the Curriculum Committee or want more information, please contact the LLI office at lli@uwgb.edu or call 920-465-2356. Thank you!!

Nominating Committee
Beginning in January, LLI will be forming a nominating committee to prepare a slate of nominees to sit on the Board of Directors. When you are asked to serve on the nominating committee or to run for a position on the Board, please consider volunteering your time and experience to keep LLI going and improving. It is a tribute to you to be offered the opportunity to take a more active part in LLI. Please seriously consider saying YES.
LLI is a member-run organization. We depend on our members to help get the word out that we are here and have so much to offer our members as well as our community. Your input and participation are essential to making LLI grow and flourish. The Board welcomes your suggestions, concerns and active participation. Please feel free to contact these members:

Travel Committee
The travel committee will be meeting after the new year to plan our summer day trips. If you have any suggestions for places to go, or if you have any suggestions for restaurants, especially in Door County, please send those our way. We will plan at least one trip to Peninsula Players and hopefully to a music event in Door County. We still need other suggestions for future trips. If we don’t use them this coming season, we will keep them in our future trip file.

Technology Committee
Beware of Scammers
Our current technology in our two Rose Hall rooms appears to be working as designed. Our only known issue was that a presentation remote/laser pointer disappeared. I hope our class coordinators continue to monitor the operations and account for all equipment before and after each class. And contact the University help desk for any technical issues.
However, we would like to talk about scam awareness. In this economy, scammers are getting more creative in trying to separate you from your money. Scammers can gather information about you here and there and then assemble it to “work” on you.
Social Media: Many of us use social media to keep up with friends and family around the world. Scammers can create fake identities and pass themselves off as someone else. Some of them create posts asking, “Where were you born?” That’s a great way to find information about you. Don’t answer those. Sometimes they create a fake giveaway or contest. When you click on the link it takes you someplace that doesn’t look familiar. Go back and don’t give them information.
Financial Institutions: Banks, credit unions or investment companies will not call, email, or text you to get your account numbers or passwords. Your account number is how they keep track of you, so they should already know it, right? However, many banks are sending texts with a "one time password" to verify you are indeed accessing your account, as a 2-stage validation. These are good.
Emails: Scammers create emails that have a similar name to legitimate companies but are fraudulent. You might get an email from a known hardware store that you have won a contest. Great! Except I’ve never been to that hardware store so how could I have entered the contest? Don’t reply.
Scammers try to rush you to make a quick decision, so they will get you to skip your normal security thoughts and reveal information that you might not want to. And remember, legitimate authorities or organizations will not request payment with gift cards or bit coins.
Stay safe out there.
