The second annual Genomic Data Infrastructure (GDI) Stakeholder Forum was held on 10 October 2024. With over 140 participants, the forum served as a fantastic platform for knowledge exchange, allowing stakeholders to learn from the insights of leading experts, as well as hear about the progress of the project.
One of the central themes was the critical role of patient and citizen engagement in the reuse of genomic data for health purposes. The discussion emphasised how the 1+Million Genomes (1+MG) initiative is actively working to integrate patient and citizen perspectives into its framework, alongside technical and implementation efforts. Putting effort into enhancing patient and citizen engagement in the genomic data infrastructure will help build trust, ensure transparency, and create a more inclusive approach to genomic data-sharing across Europe.
Participants also delved into key challenges, such as overcoming legal barriers and improving communication strategies to engage diverse populations effectively. By drawing on the experiences of projects like TEHDAS and JANE, stakeholders explored how large-scale citizen engagement can inform public health initiatives and shape a more equitable approach to genomic data reuse. The stakeholder forum continued to highlight the importance of ongoing collaboration and feedback with experts and stakeholders.
