Whether, as the saying goes, it is a result of April showers or simply Mother Nature鈥檚 natural cycle, this month is the time for flowers in Provence and along the C么te d鈥橝zur. Sure, the lavender fields in July are spectacular, and the sunflowers are enough to stop you in your tracks. However, it is the poppies that provide artistic inspiration and frustration. Unfortunately, poppies, for me anyway, are impossible to photograph, never appearing as beautiful in a digital format.
Spring in Provence also brings wisteria clinging to stone walls and dangling from trellises. The iris that Van Gogh captured on his canvases grow wild by the roadside. Walking in the hills is a herb de Provence scented journey. The French Riviera gardens are impressive all year round, but head to the Roses and Plants Festival at Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild May 14-15th for a vivid display of flowers from over 30 growers.
