announced a new initiative, Wellness on Wheels, that aims to close gaps in access to health care across the state by bringing physicians into communities to provide medical care.
CareSource: CareSource sponsors mass food distribution in Montgomery County (8/31) – The 2023 Montgomery County Mass Food Distribution was the single largest mass food distribution in the history of the partnership between The Foodbank and CareSource.
HHS: September TCH Newsletter (8/21) – HHS’s Think Cultural Health (TCH) published its September newsletter, which highlights affirming care for LGBTQ+ patients, culturally and linguistically appropriate services (CLAS) for Latino patients, and the TCH Promotores de Salud e-learning program.
CDC: One in 5 Women Reported Mistreatment While Receiving Maternity Care (8/22) – The CDC released a report about pregnancy-related deaths, finding that mistreatment during maternity care was higher among Black (30%), Hispanic (29%), and multiracial (27%) women.
White House:WHIAANHPI Launches Effort to Demystify Federal Grants Process and Bolster Technical Assistance Outreach to Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander Communities (8/24) – As announced in an HHS press release, the White House Initiative on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders (WHIAANHPI) launched “Demystifying Federal Grants,” a new webinar series aimed at sharing insights and tips to help community-based organizations access federal grants and resources.
SAMHSA:Advisory Committee for Women's Services (ACWS); Solicitation of Nominations for Additional Non-Voting Representatives on the Maternal Mental Health Task Force (8/24) – The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is soliciting applications from qualified individuals or organizations to be considered for non-voting representative positions on the Maternal Mental Health Task Force subcommittee of the Advisory Committee for Women's Services. The nomination period is open until September 22, 2023.
AHRQ: Use of Open-Ended Responses to Explore Disparities in Patient Experience (9/1) – The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) issued a notice requesting that the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) approve the proposed information collection project “Use of Open-Ended Responses to Explore Disparities in Patient Experience.” Comments are due October 5.
CORRECTION: The last edition of Social Determinants Updates included a CMS video regarding SDOH proxy responses. To clarify, the video is only applicable to specific, mandated screeners that must be administered in certain settings, such as home health agencies, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, and long-term care hospitals. The video does not apply to SDOH screening in other settings.

Healthcare IT News:AI NLP models extract SDOH data from clinical notes (8/23) – A study by the Regenstrief Institute and Indiana University has demonstrated the potential of using natural language processing technology to extract social risk factor information from clinical notes.
Modern Healthcare:Distrustful patients, scarce resources hamper social needs screening (8/24) – A recent push from regulators has intensified efforts to screen patients for social determinants of health. Still, many providers are grappling with low levels of response and inaccurate data. The result is an opaque view of factors that affect health and an inability to resolve problems, according to the article.
Kaiser Family Foundation: Continued Rises in Extreme Heat and Implications for Health Disparities (8/24) – A new KFF article found that while extreme heat and other climate-related weather events have implications for everyone, they disproportionately affect historically marginalized groups who are at higher risk for dying from heat exposure.
The Lown Institute:How to improve health-related social needs screening (8/29) – The author concluded that addressing health-related social needs can be an effective way to quickly improve the health and life conditions of patients, and we should continue to push for progress in this area.

Better Care Playbook: Policy Levers to Support Community Health Worker Programs for Populations with Complex Needs (8/17) – Better Care Playbook spoke with Carl Rush, principal consultant for Community Resources, LLC, and senior technical advisor to the National Association of Community Health Workers (NACHW). They responded to questions about supports offered by CHWs and challenging when implementing CHW programs.
CareSource: Beacon aims to improve infant, maternal health with CareSource grant (8/24) – Beacon Health System has been awarded $100,000 from the nonprofit managed care entity, and Aligning for Health member, CareSource. Among other things, Beacon will add two new, highly trained Community Health Workers will also be added to help address the underlying social determinants of health that contribute to health disparities.
HHS:Celebrating Community Health Workers (8/28) – Assistant Secretary for Health (ASH) Dr. Rachel Levine penned a blog post calling attention to the vital role these frontline public health workers fill.
National Association of Community Health Workers: National Community Health Worker Awareness Week Toolkit (8/28) – The National Association of Community Health Workers published a toolkit with resources to prepare, stay connected, and make an impact before, during, and beyond NCHWAW.
