Summer at First Unitarian
Now through mid-August, things slow down at First Unitarian. But there is still a lot happening! Instead of formal services led by First Unitarian’s own religious professionals, congregants get a chance to hear from other members and get a sense of the talents and different perspectives that are right here within our own walls. This summer, we’ll also welcome guests from different faith traditions, including Sikhism, Baha’i faith, and Rissho Kosei Kai Buddhism. Rev. Diana returns in late August with a "seeker series," services that are designed to address questions of interest to spiritual seekers and those who may be searching for a spiritual home.
Religious Exploration for children and youth has begun and will continue through August with a less structured curriculum than during the school year. Some Adult RE classes and affinity groups continue through the summer while others may take a break, so please check the newsletter to see what's happening on a week-by-week basis.
Rev. Diana takes study leave (to attend Ministry Days and GA, read, research, and prepare for the next church year) the first two weeks in August. She will take vacation during the month of July. DLRE Tim Atkins will be available in the summer. Office Administrator Marlies Grogg and Congregational Life Coordinator Nathan Boone will take a few days off here and there over the summer so please check first to make sure they're available. Our Choir Director Ebuka Ezeakacha will be training with the National Guard through the end of July. You'll continue to hear from our new accompanist, Steven Elkins Kennedy at services throughout the summer.

Child Care and Nursery
The Childcare Rooms are open from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm each Sunday morning. (10:00 am to 11:00 am for childcare for any adult programming happening and 11:00 am to 12:30 pm for worship.)
Childcare will be taking place in the nursery and attached preschool room.

- Our meditation group that meets downstairs in the Corley Commons - Meditation Room
- Our main Forum like programming will take place in the Eddy Room every Sunday at 10:00am (except the 3rd Sunday of the month it will be in Daniel Hall) and the topic will change each week.

Befrienders is ready to assist members of our church who are recovering from surgeries or illnesses by offering cards of well-wishes, meal trains, transportation to church or medical appointments as well as arranging for visitations.
Steve Weston recently took a fall and is currently at the Mercy Rehab Inpatient facility located on Westbound Memorial, just east of McArthur Blvd. He would enjoy folks coming for a visit between the hours of 4:00 pm and 7:00 pm.
Buzz Forsythe is home from his stint in the hospital and would love for folks to come up to Edmond to visit him. Give him a call first to let him know you’re planning to visit.

News from Sustainable Living Organization
This has been a hard summer. We’ve experienced some of the worst extreme heat on record: July 2023 is the hottest month on record, and 2023 is on track to be the hottest year ever. In Texas, incarcerated human beings have been struggling to endure the extreme heat without air conditioning. Agricultural workers, construction workers, roofers, outdoor workers, and those who work in unairconditioned spaces are all at increased risk of heat-related illness and death with no federal protections for heat. Temperatures are too high for birds and other wildlife to cope. Ocean temperatures exceeding 100 degrees threaten marine life. As of today, the US has had 15 confirmed billion-dollar weather/climate disaster events, including 1 flood, 13 severe storms, and 1 winter storm resulting in 113 deaths.
Our next SLO meeting will be on Sunday, August 20. We are on the church calendar for the 10:00 am Forum that day. It’s the 1st of Rev Diana’s Seeker Services, which generally bring new visitors to the church.
On that day, SLO plans to update the congregation on the proposed Kitchen Policy (which goes before the Board in September), to discuss a plan for training the use of kitchen appliances to all the various groups in the congregation, update on current OKC recycling policies, and Green Sanctuary. We learned that we have an adequate budget to acquire services for composting kitchen waste, and perhaps glass recycling, from Fertile Grounds, all thanks to our sales of coffee, tea and chocolate! So, buy SLO products so we can do more to help the church GREEN UP even more! Details available by that meeting.

August Change for Change
For the month of August our Change for Change recipient is the SISU Youth Services
SISU YOUTH SERVICES - “Together, we can end youth homelessness." - Their vision is to end homelessness and hopelessness among transition-age youth in Oklahoma City. We can support Oklahoma City's unhoused youth by making a donation or signing up to volunteer. With our support, it helps them deliver the best care and plan for the growing future.

OK LGBTQ+ NEWS - Freedom, as in a future bound with each other. How can we work as a movement to build community with both feet firmly planted in Oklahoma? How can we work so that future generations don’t feel they must leave to be safe, can’t imagine leaving this place they call home? It’s a question we're carrying into this Fall, and next session, and the work beyond that.
Last year during our annual Freedom OK Leadership Summit, we asked you to reimagine with us. This year, we have reimagined our fall programming, under the leadership of Mataia Blackwell and Taylor Raye, and our Leadership Summit has evolved into what we’re calling The Freedom Sessions conference. The function of the Committee on Ministry is to monitor on a regular and continuing basis the effectiveness of the church’s ministry, acknowledging and praising areas of strength, and assessing the reasons behind areas of perceived weakness or dissatisfaction, so that we, as a congregation, can grow into our full potential and fulfill our mission. If you have any questions about the role of the Committee on Ministry or have concerns, praise, or ideas about the ministries of this church, you are welcome to reach out to a member of the CoM.
