One Is A Big Number

The Significance Of One

John 1:43-46 is somewhat of a familiar scenario where we find Jesus inviting Philip to follow Him and be his disciple. However, Philip's actions are a bit different from others' because he didn't immediately leave everything and go with Jesus. It seems that Jesus was not leaving the city right away, so Philip went and found his friend Nathanael and exclaimed that he had found the One they had been waiting for. When Nathanael was skeptical, Philip didn't try to convince him, he simply replied, "Come and see." Philip shows us the power of simply inviting one person to come and see. We, too, can do as Philip did.

  • Go and tell. Philip didn't wait for his friend to come to him. Philip went to his friend with a simple message, 'I found what you are looking for.' Jesus is the answer to all of life's questions and concerns. Do you know someone who is overwhelmed with life or struggling with their marriage? Go and tell them, 'I found what you are looking for.' Listen to the people around you and ask yourself, "Who can I go and tell?"
  • Stop making excuses. Philip might have known that Nathanael would be skeptical when he told him about Jesus, but that didn't stop him. He knew that bringing his friend to Jesus was more important than any discomfort he might feel. We often think things like, "Oh, I'm too busy", or "I don't want to offend them", or maybe "It won't make a difference". Notice how our excuses reflect a desire for our own comfort? Our excuses are pretty weak in comparison to the great sacrifice God made to bring us to Him.
  • Play your part. Philip brought Nathanael to Jesus and Nathanael became a follower as well. It doesn't always happen that quickly or easily, but don't get discouraged! Not seeing the result does not lessen the impact. 1 Corinthians 3:8-9 tells us that some of us plant the seeds, others water the seeds, but we are all working toward the same goal. We need to each play our part, and trust God to work all the parts together for His good.

Embrace One

God loves using small things to make a big difference. It can be as simple as:

One person. Who is your ONE?
One step. Pray - Share - Invite

One is a powerful number if ONE life is transformed!
