6/15/21 - Ace - $17.00
A young woman living in a rigid, puritanical society discovers dark powers within herself in this stunning, feminist fantasy debut. In the lands of Bethel, where the Prophet's word is law, Immanuelle Moore's very existence is blasphemy. Her mother’s union with an outsider of a different race cast her once-proud family into disgrace, so Immanuelle does her best to worship the Father, follow Holy Protocol, and lead a life of submission, devotion, and absolute conformity, like all the other women in the settlement.
But a mishap lures her into the forbidden Darkwood surrounding Bethel, where the first prophet once chased and killed four powerful witches. Their spirits are still lurking there, and they bestow a gift on Immanuelle: the journal of her dead mother, who Immanuelle is shocked to learn once sought sanctuary in the wood.
Fascinated by the secrets in the diary, Immanuelle finds herself struggling to understand how her mother could have consorted with the witches. But when she begins to learn grim truths about the Church and its history, she realizes the true threat to Bethel is its own darkness. And she starts to understand that if Bethel is to change, it must begin with her.

7/6/21 - Neal Porter Books - $18.99
Just because you're really small doesn't mean you can't have a big heart. When the diminutive Dot stands up to a bully on behalf of an even smaller friend, she proves how big she can truly be.
Dot is the smallest person in her family and at school; even her name is small! People often mistake her for being younger than she is, but not when she tells them the square root of sixty-four is eight, nor when she orders from the grown-up menu at restaurants or checks out the hard books at the library. She may be small, but she's not little.
When a new boy named Sam joins Dot's class, she wonders if he's even smaller than she is. When she sees him getting bullied by a mean kid twice his size, she knows she has to do the big thing and stand up for him.
Maya Myers's debut picture book has a pitch-perfect voice that captures the inimitable Dot in all her fierceness, and Hyewon Yum's delightful pastel-hued artwork is its perfect complement.

In the newest installment of New York Times bestselling author Kristy Woodson Harvey’s Peachtree Bluff series, three generations of the Murphy women must come together when a hurricane threatens to destroy their hometown—and the holiday season in the process.
When the Murphy women are in trouble, they always know they can turn to their mother, Ansley. So when eldest daughter Caroline and her husband, James, announce they are divorcing—and fifteen-year-old daughter Vivi acts out in response—Caroline, at her wits end, can’t think of anything to do besides leave her with Ansley in Peachtree Bluff for the holidays. After all, how much trouble can one teenager get into on a tiny island?
Quite a lot, as it turns out.
As the “storm of the century” heads toward Peachtree Bluff, Ansley and her husband, Jack, with Vivi in tow, are grateful they’re planning to leave for the trip of a lifetime. But Vivi’s recklessness forces the trio to shelter in place during the worst hurricane Peachtree has ever seen. With no power, no provisions, and the water rising, the circumstances become dire very quickly...and the Murphy sisters, who evacuated to New York, soon realize it’s up to them to conduct a rescue mission. With the bridges closed and no way to access Peachtree Bluff by land or air, they set sail on Caroline’s boat, The Starlite Sisters, determined to rebuild their beloved town—as well as their family.
In “pitch perfect tones” (Publishers Weekly) and written with her signature Southern charm, New York Times bestselling author Kristy Woodson Harvey explores the magic of Christmas, the power of forgiveness, and the importance of family in a tale that reminds us that, no matter the circumstances, home is always where we belong—especially during the holidays.

10/12/21 - Simon & Schuster - $30.00
From the #1 bestselling authors Hillary Clinton and Louise Penny comes a novel of unsurpassed thrills and incomparable insider expertise—State of Terror.
After a tumultuous period in American politics, a new administration has just been sworn in, and to everyone’s surprise the president chooses a political enemy for the vital position of secretary of state.
There is no love lost between the president of the United States and Ellen Adams, his new secretary of state. But it’s a canny move on the part of the president. With this appointment, he silences one of his harshest critics, since taking the job means Adams must step down as head of her multinational media conglomerate.
As the new president addresses Congress for the first time, with Secretary Adams in attendance, Anahita Dahir, a young foreign service officer (FSO) on the Pakistan desk at the State Department, receives a baffling text from an anonymous source.
Too late, she realizes the message was a hastily coded warning.
What begins as a series of apparent terrorist attacks is revealed to be the beginning of an international chess game involving the volatile and Byzantine politics of Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Iran; the race to develop nuclear weapons in the region; the Russian mob; a burgeoning rogue terrorist organization; and an American government set back on its heels in the international arena.
As the horrifying scale of the threat becomes clear, Secretary Adams and her team realize it has been carefully planned to take advantage of four years of an American government out of touch with international affairs, out of practice with diplomacy, and out of power in the places where it counts the most.
To defeat such an intricate, carefully constructed conspiracy, it will take the skills of a unique team: a passionate young FSO; a dedicated journalist; and a smart, determined, but as yet untested new secretary of state.
State of Terror is a unique and utterly compelling international thriller cowritten by Hillary Rodham Clinton, the 67th secretary of state, and Louise Penny, a multiple award-winning #1 New York Times bestselling novelist.

10/12/21 - William Morrow - $28.99
Multimillion-copy bestselling author Gregory Maguire unveils the first in a three-book series spun off the iconic Wicked Years, featuring Elphaba’s granddaughter, the green-skinned Rain.
Ten years ago this season, Gregory Maguire wrapped up the series he began with Wicked by giving us the fourth and final volume of the Wicked Years, his elegiac Out of Oz.
But “out of Oz” isn’t “gone for good.” Maguire’s new series, Another Day, is here, twenty-five years after Wicked first flew into our lives.
Volume one, The Brides of Maracoor, finds Elphaba’s granddaughter, Rain, washing ashore on a foreign island. Comatose from crashing into the sea, Rain is taken in by a community of single women committed to obscure devotional practices.
As the mainland of Maracoor sustains an assault by a foreign navy, the island’s civil-servant overseer struggles to understand how an alien arriving on the shores of Maracoor could threaten the stability and wellbeing of an entire nation. Is it myth or magic at work, for good or for ill?
The trilogy Another Day will follow this green-skinned girl from the island outpost into the unmapped badlands of Maracoor before she learns how, and becomes ready, to turn her broom homeward, back to her family and her lover, back to Oz, which—in its beauty, suffering, mystery, injustice, and possibility—reminds us all too clearly of the troubled yet sacred terrain of our own lives.

10/5/21 - Little, Brown and Company - $32.00
There’s no right way to keep a diary, but if there’s an entertaining way, David Sedaris seems to have mastered it. If it’s navel-gazing you’re after, you’ve come to the wrong place; ditto treacly self-examination. Rather, his observations turn outward: a fight between two men on a bus, a fight between two men on the street, pedestrians being whacked over the head or gathering to watch as a man considers leaping to his death. There’s a dirty joke shared at a book signing, then a dirtier one told at a dinner party—lots of jokes here. Plenty of laughs. These diaries remind you that you once really hated George W. Bush, and that not too long ago, Donald Trump was just a harmless laughingstock, at least on French TV. Time marches on, and Sedaris, at his desk or on planes, in hotel dining rooms and odd Japanese inns, records it. The entries here reflect an ever-changing background—new administrations, new restrictions on speech and conduct. What you can say at the start of the book, you can’t by the end. At its best, A Carnival of Snackery is a sort of sampler: the bitter and the sweet. Some entries are just what you wanted. Others you might want to spit discreetly into a napkin.

Jack Reacher is back in a brand-new page-turning thriller from acclaimed #1 bestselling authors Lee Child and Andrew Child.
Digging graves had not been part of my plans when I woke up that morning.
Reacher goes where he wants, when he wants. That morning he was heading west, walking under the merciless desert sun—until he comes upon a curious scene. A Jeep has crashed into the only tree for miles around. A woman is slumped over the wheel. Dead? No, nothing is what it seems.
The woman is Michaela Fenton, an army veteran turned FBI agent trying to find her twin brother, who might be mixed up with some dangerous people. Most of them would rather die than betray their terrifying leader, who has burrowed his influence deep into the nearby border town, a backwater that has seen better days. The mysterious Dendoncker rules from the shadows, out of sight and under the radar, keeping his dealings in the dark. He would know the fate of Fenton’s brother.
Reacher is good at finding people who don’t want to be found, so he offers to help, despite feeling that Fenton is keeping secrets of her own. But a life hangs in the balance. Maybe more than one. But to bring Dendoncker down will be the riskiest job of Reacher's life. Failure is not an option, because in this kind of game, the loser is always better off dead.

10/19/21 - William Morrow - $17.99
I would like to say a few things about my first husband, William.
Lucy Barton is a writer, but her ex-husband, William, remains a hard man to read. William, she confesses, has always been a mystery to me. Another mystery is why the two have remained connected after all these years. They just are.
So Lucy is both surprised and not surprised when William asks her to join him on a trip to investigate a recently uncovered family secret—one of those secrets that rearrange everything we think we know about the people closest to us. What happens next is nothing less than another example of what Hilary Mantel has called Elizabeth Strout’s “perfect attunement to the human condition.” There are fears and insecurities, simple joys and acts of tenderness, and revelations about affairs and other spouses, parents and their children. On every page of this exquisite novel we learn more about the quiet forces that hold us together—even after we’ve grown apart.
At the heart of this story is the indomitable voice of Lucy Barton, who offers a profound, lasting reflection on the very nature of existence. “This is the way of life,” Lucy says: “the many things we do not know until it is too late.”

Nonstop suspense from the #1 New York Times bestselling author: Investigator Lacy Stoltz follows the trail of a serial killer, and closes in on a shocking suspect—a sitting judge. In The Whistler, Lacy Stoltz investigated a corrupt judge who was taking millions in bribes from a crime syndicate. She put the criminals away, but only after being attacked and nearly killed. Three years later, and approaching forty, she is tired of her work for the Florida Board on Judicial Conduct and ready for a change.
Then she meets a mysterious woman who is so frightened she uses a number of aliases. Jeri Crosby’s father was murdered twenty years earlier in a case that remains unsolved and that has grown stone cold. But Jeri has a suspect whom she has become obsessed with and has stalked for two decades. Along the way, she has discovered other victims.
Suspicions are easy enough, but proof seems impossible. The man is brilliant, patient, and always one step ahead of law enforcement. He is the most cunning of all serial killers. He knows forensics, police procedure, and most important: he knows the law.
He is a judge, in Florida—under Lacy’s jurisdiction.
He has a list, with the names of his victims and targets, all unsuspecting people unlucky enough to have crossed his path and wronged him in some way. How can Lacy pursue him, without becoming the next name on his list?
The Judge’s List is by any measure John Grisham’s most surprising, chilling novel yet.

Jonathan Franzen’s gift for wedding depth and vividness of character with breadth of social vision has never been more dazzlingly evident than in Crossroads.
It’s December 23, 1971, and heavy weather is forecast for Chicago. Russ Hildebrandt, the associate pastor of a liberal suburban church, is on the brink of breaking free of a marriage he finds joyless—unless his wife, Marion, who has her own secret life, beats him to it. Their eldest child, Clem, is coming home from college on fire with moral absolutism, having taken an action that will shatter his father. Clem’s sister, Becky, long the social queen of her high-school class, has sharply veered into the counterculture, while their brilliant younger brother Perry, who’s been selling drugs to seventh graders, has resolved to be a better person. There is nothing more satisfying or comforting than tying on a favorite apron and baking something delicious. And nowhere has this been so woven into life than in the American South, where the attitude is that every day is worthy of a special treat from the kitchen.

With Cheryl as your guide, it’s like having generations of Southern bakers standing over your shoulder, showing you just how to cream butter and sugar, fold whipped egg whites into batter, adjust for the temperature and humidity in your kitchen, and master those glorious piecrusts by overcoming the thing that experienced bakers know—a pie dough can sense fear!

But now her family has been drifting apart, and with nobody to gather around it, the table grows smaller and smaller.
Can Violet remind her family of the warmth of time spent together, and gather around the table once more?

The Littlest Yak by Lu Fraser

As forever the shortest person in my class, this story really resonated for me and I thought the rhymes were really well done. Recommended for height-challenged children as well as younger siblings who seem jealous of what their 'bigger' sibs can do.

These Silent Woods by Kimi Cunningham Grant
|
|
These Silent Woods is listed as a mystery/thriller and while there are lots and lots of secrets and a murder towards the end, it is actually a beautiful, emotional, atmospheric story of Cooper and how he came to live in an isolated cabin in Appalachia and why he is raising his 8-year-old daughter Finch totally alone and in a place so isolated. There is darkness in Coopers past which is slowly revealed but that never overshadows the love and goodness he has shown his daughter and all he has taught her about nature, survival, love, and goodness. While there are some very tense and scary moments, I would never have called it a thriller. It is a gorgeously written story of a father who loves his daughter above all else.

When Sparks Fly by Helena Hunting
|

Avery is a workaholic who spends all of her time running her family's event space/hotel. When Avery gets into an accident and sustains major injuries that require 8 weeks of recovery and round-the-clock care, Declan steps up because he feels responsible, and because he cares about Avery. While caring for her, though, both Declan and Avery discover that perhaps they've been feeling more than friendship for each other for a lot longer than they realized. In the vein of How to Walk Away by Katherine Center, this book will make you feel all the feels along with Avery and Declan as they navigate their new relationship and all its pitfalls.

We Can Be Heroes by Kyrie McCauley
|
|
Cassie is dead, shot at school by her boyfriend, whose family happens to own the gun manufacturer in town. Cassie's best friends, Beck and Vivian, are now stuck -- in their memories of Cassie and of the day the tragedy happened, and in the town they both desperately wanted to escape. And now they're being haunted by Cassie's ghost, who wants closure. So Beck and Vivian start painting murals around town to bring attention to what happened to Cassie and what continues to happen to girls and women across the country. More than anything, this is a story about girls and power -- the power others hold over them, and the power they want to wrest back for themselves. A compelling story that will stay in readers' minds long after they finish reading.

Vespertine by Margaret Rogerson
|
|
Artemisia wants nothing more than to be left alone to cleanse dead bodies to prepare their souls to pass on without lingering and possessing the living. But when an army of possessed soldiers shows up at her convent, she's left with no choice but to awaken the revenant bound to an old saint's relic, a powerful spirit that desires to consume everything living and dead. Artemisia and the revenant must learn to work together and trust each other, though, when they uncover a mystery bigger than anything either of them could imagine. With plenty of intrigue and mystery and with the central age-old question of what makes something (or someone) good or evil, readers of Rogerson's previous books will not be disappointed in her this new fantasy.

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab
|
|
In a small town in France in 1714, all Addie LaRue wants is to be free, to not be tied down to a husband and family she doesn't want. In a moment of desperation, while running from her wedding, she makes a deal with a devil -- she will have her freedom, and he can have her soul when she is done with it. The catch -- she is immortal, but no one will remember her. Until one day, in a small bookshop in 2014, someone does remember, and Addie experiences real human relationship for the first time in her long life. A Faustian fairy tale that asks not only what love is, but what it isn't, and what people will do to have it, and to keep it once found. It takes Addie LaRue 300 years to find these answers, but what a beautiful, heartbreaking story she has to tell at the end.

The Troubled Girls of Dragomir Academy by Anne Ursu
|
|
Marya Lupu has spent most of her life in the shadow of her older brother Luka, who will possibly (or let's face it, probably) become a sorcerer. Except when Luka's visit with the sorcerer's comes, Marya makes a mess of everything...again. So it's not really a surprise when a letter comes saying that Marya must go to the Dragomir Academy for Troubled Girls, though it hurts that her parents seem glad to be rid of her. As secrets pop up in the school, Marya takes the advice of her friend and neighbor from back home and begins to question the stories she and the other girls are told -- about themselves, about the school, about magic and the world in general -- until they can uncover the truth. A fantastic middle-grade fantasy adventure about learning to trust yourself and disregard stories that are obviously untrue -- even the ones you tell yourself.

The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise by Dan Gemeinhart
|
|
Heartfelt, witty, and warm, The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise became a new favorite of mine before I'd even finished reading. It's a beautifully written story of a girl trying to find her way back home before something she loves dearly is gone forever - only she's journeying on a renovated school bus with her slightly crazy father, her kitten, Ivan, a goat, and a band of misfits picked up along the way who quickly become family. The Remarkable Journey of Coyote Sunrise is a sweet, vibrant tale of grief, community, adventure, and home, and I don't doubt that I'll be visiting Coyote's world again very soon.

Fan Fiction: A Mem-Noir: Inspired by True Events by Brent Spiner - SIGNED COPIES AVAILABLE
|
|
Memoirs are not usually my go to must read genre. It hovers somewhere between Nature books and Repair manuals. But I'm a nerd and a huge Star Trek fan. When Data writes a book, well, my emotion chip pinged loudly and I was not disappointed. This was a fun romp through nostalgia and self deprecating humor. I was reminded of the wonderful 'Fletch' series by Gregory McDonald. Though the plot is a simple one, the recognizable supporting cast of characters and Spiner's voice hooked me. Hope he has more stories to tell.

Redshirts: A Novel with Three Codas by John Scalzi
|
|
'Redshirts' is an enjoyable mashup to the famous TV series Star Trek and Galaxy Quest, the perfect film homage to that series. Actors suddenly find themselves representing their character counterparts on a dangerous mission. Of course, this doesn't bode well for those garbed in the red shirt, notorious for signaling assured death. Will all make their way back alive to reality and to their soft lives? Stay tuned.

The Boys by Ron Howard and Clint Howard - SIGNED COPIES AVAILABLE

The Boys is the best memoir Ive read in 2021. Ron and Clint Howards story of their show business childhoods is mesmerizing. The brothers share in alternating sections about their work with legends such as Henry Fonda, John Wayne, and George Lucas, as well as their zany antics on set. But the real stars of the book are their parents, whose calm guidance and strong example led the boys to find fulfilling lives. A great holiday gift for the classic TV and movie lover in your life.

This Ballad of Laurel Springs by Janet Beard
|
|
This multi-generational novel has at its heart a ballad about a murder that took place long ago in Tennessee. And like many ballads- as well as country songs- its the woman who is betrayed. As Beard weaves this story through one extended family through the years , the mystery of the song works into the stories of the other women and their destinies. It was a pleasure to read this novel from a gifted writer!

Show Me a Sign by Ann Clare LeZotte
|
|
Mary Lambert, is deaf. To her and many of her community in Martas Vinyard, in the early nineteenth century, this is not unusual. In fact, many living in Marys community are deaf. There is no clear reason of why this happens? Did it come from the land, from their ancestors, or is this some defect they have been born with. To the Islanders, being deaf does not slow them down. They have developed their own form of sign language, and live prosperous lives on the island. However, when a scientist from the main land comes to discover the 'real reason' for the deafness in their community, the reality of how the deaf are viewed off the island becomes very clear. For Mary, this will become frightening clear, when the scientist kidnaps her as a 'live specimen' to discover the cause of the deafness in the community. He whisks her away to the main land where she is treated as part slave and part lab specimen. Can Mary find enough strength within herself to face the darkness of her situation and find someone who will listen to her? Will she ever see her beloved island again? A riveting historical tale, Show me a Sign will show you the true endurance of ones spirit no matter what may stand in the way.

Once Upon a Wardrobe by Patti Callahan
|
|
This unfolding tale of how C.S. Lewis penned one of his best known works is spellbinding. I cannot remember the last time a book made me cry, but Patty Callahan created Megs and George who reached in and melted my heart. They came alive in my eyes and I watched them grow, wonder, evolve and most of all exhibit pure love. Life and love don't always have happy endings, but always have endings. This book yields great examples of how we can reach the ending, experience immeasurable sorry, and still find room for joy. C.S. Lewis is a key figure in the book, and is portrayed vividly as a creative mind for the ages and as someone you would be comfortable having lunch and a talk with. I cannot imagine that was a simple task to accomplish. The depth that brings to the story is critical to understanding the journey of exploration Megs and George undertake, Megs from her view as a physicist and George as a precocious boy. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to explore a bit of history personalized and an unmatched tale of relationships.

Last Girl Ghosted by Lisa Unger
|
|
This is a frightening story about the ways technology can expose us to situations we cannot imagine. Everyone has secrets, some more shocking than others, what if someone knew all your secrets? What if they decided to take advantage of all the things they knew about you? What if they met your every need and desire? Then what if they disappeared? This story explores all these horrors in elaborate and completely realistic detail. I could not put it down when I started. Lisa Unger has written one of her best books, don't miss it!

There are no limits to what I love to read, however I tend to gravitate to mystery/thriller action stories that are fast paced with lots of twists and turns that keep you guessing all the way to the end. There is nothing I love more than an ending that comes completely out of left field that I never saw coming.

The Well of Ice by Andrea Carter
|
|
A delightful and cleverly written book. Andrea Carter paints a lush picture in your mind of an idyllic Irish town (Glendara) loaded with colorful and well developed characters. As she tells us the story of Benedicta 'Ben' OKeeffe, a young solicitor attempting to rebuild her life after the murder of her sister, an intriguing and complex tale begins to build. Ben travels to Dublin and a chance encounter with Luke Kirby, her former lover and the man who has just been released from prison after serving his sentence for the murder of Bens sister. Or was it simply a chance encounter? The author spins a story with a complex web of characters, all of whom are inextricably tied to the story in some way. When Ben returns to Glendara and finds the local pub burnt down and the barmaid missing, she begins taking matters into her own hands to get to the bottom of this tragic series of events. When she learns that Luke Kirby has found a new young girlfriend from the town and has decided to make Glendara his new home, things take a sinister turn for Ben and Glendara. I strongly recommend this one for a real 'whodunit' read!
