The Front Room

September 6th in theatres

Why should I care? It's the feature film debut from the Eggers Brothers and is based on the 2016 short story of the same name. The Egger Brothers are Max and Sam, who happen to be the brothers of Robert Eggers. Robert Eggers is the writer and director of notable horror films, The Witch, The Lighthouse and this year's Nosferatu.

What's the story? Everything goes to hell for newly pregnant Belinda after her mother-in-law moves in and tries to get her claws on the child.

Anything notable? While this is the feature film debut for the Egger Brothers, they have plenty of experience working with their brother. They served as co-writers on The Lighthouse, production assistants on The Witch and received "special thanks" on The Northman.

The Thicket

Why should I care? The film has been in development for a long time and Peter Dinklage has been attached to it since 2014. He's described the film as a "passion project" for him.

What's it about? When a bounty hunter and a band of unlikely heroes pursue a brutal killer, they find themselves in a deadly no-man's-land known as the Thicket.

Anything else notable? Metallica frontman James Hetfield makes an appearance in the film and while he's been in many films around Metallica, it's his first acting role in a narrative feature.

The Paragon

Why should I care? The Psychedelic no-budget comedy out of New Zealand about "a psychic loser... is a winner". It's the debut feature from Michael Duignan, who has a background in music videos, short comedies, TV and more.

What's it about? The victim of a hit and run learns how to be psychic so he can find the car that hit him and take revenge on the driver. A fantasy comedy, where revenge becomes a cosmic experience.

Anything else notable? The budget for the film was in the neighborhood of NZ$25,000. Duignan had directed episodes of the Power Rangers previously and he claims that experience helped him spend the budget wisely.

Festival Film of the Week

Hard Truths

The Toronto International Film Festival is held from Sept 5th to 15th this year and has grown to become one of the most prestigious and largest publicly attended film festivals in the world.

Hard Truths is getting its world premiere there this year and its British director Mike Leigh's 23rd film. He's reuniting with Oscar-nominated star of Secrets & Lies, Marianne Jean-Baptiste

Synopsis: Ongoing exploration of the contemporary world with a tragicomic study of human strengths and weaknesses.

Streaming Film of the Week

Ghostlight

Ghostlight came out last year and is now available on Peacock. The film was directed by Kelly O'Sullivan and Alex Thompson, written by O'Sullivan. It premiered at Sundance and was released by IFC Films and would go on to get multiple nominations and awards from festivals such as SXSW, Dallas International Film Festival and Seattle International Film Festival.

It was called "a small film that elicits a huge emotional response", as well as "deeply moving and superbly acted".

Synopsis: When a construction worker joins a local theatre's production of "Romeo and Juliet," the drama onstage starts to mirror his own life.
