There is one word I hate most.
It dominates leadership literature.
Mindset.
This is why.
When someone says:
"You don't have the right mindset"
What am I supposed to do with that?
Letโs imagine you are leading change.
A team is hesitant to change.
You focus on the importance of "Mindset".
The result.
Everyone says "I already have a growth mindset."
Who wants to admit they don't?
Instead, I focus on behaviours.
"I noticed that given the choice, you selected the way weโve always done it over newer alternatives. Iโd love to learn more about what was behind this choice?โ
This is more useful.
- It is specific and observable.
- It demonstrates curiosity.
- It is easier to implement change.
Drop the mindset.
Focus on behaviours.
