Dear friend,

It's a new week.  We're so glad you're here!

What has your name on it?  This is the question I (Jocelyn) have been pondering this week.

And, not to be bleak, but if you died today, would you be proud of how, when, and where you left your stamp?

BlackHer Shero of the Week

Our BlackHer Shero of the Week is Hillary Blouta former prosecutor and founder of For the People, a California-based nonprofit focused on reducing the prison population through District Attorney (DA) engagement, community empowerment, and system accountability.

BlackHer Fact

Even though Black women comprise only 14% of the total U.S. population, over 31% of us serve in the military.

According to Women in the U.S. Military: Growing Share, Distinctive Profile, "of the 167,000 enlisted women in the military, 31 percent are black, twice their percentage in the civilian female population. Black men represent about 16 percent of the male enlisted population, roughly equal to their proportion in the civilian population."

Honoring Our Veterans

This Veteran's Day, we are honoring the women and men who serve in our Armed Forces.  We're also learning about the serious challenges that Black female veterans face here at home.

Neglected at Home After Serving Abroad: The Story of Black Women Veterans by the African American Policy Forum shares important insights about our sisters who have served and makes a clear case for how much more we need to do to serve our Sheroes.

Watch it.

Sanders and Harris and Warren, Oh My!

Last week was a BIG week in politics.  The great state of Virginia is now ALL Blue and Kentuckians surprised us by electing a Democratic Governor.  (In 2016, #DumpTrump won Kentucky by 30 points!)

Last week, Black women also made BIG moves by swinging their weight behind 3 presidential hopefuls.

Higher Heights endorsed Senator Kamala Harris.

Black Womxn and Ayanna Pressley endorsed Senator Elizabeth Warren.

Three members of The Squad, Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Alexandria Ocasio Cortez, let us know that they are all in for Senator Bernie Sanders.

Who are you backing to be the next leader of the free world and why?

Speaking of the 2020 Elections

Michelle Obama announced her 2020 Voting Squad for When We All Vote.

They are hosting their 2020 Kickoff Call on November 13th.

4 Black Women Talk About Harriet and Her Lessons for Today

Angela teamed up with three friends to see Harriet, the new herstoric film about Harriet Tubman.

"...watching the Harriet movie as a “free” black woman in America in 2019, I couldn’t help but wonder whether I was doing enough as a “free” person. I am very accomplished. I’ve gone to all the “right” schools (Harvard College, Columbia Business School), had major accomplishments as a professional producer for major news networks and now am a media executive for a Fortune 15 company…but as I watched the film’s depictions of Harriet challenging the white and Black Abolitionist Society in Auburn, NY, and indeed the entire slavocracy, I had to ask myself — was I becoming complacent?"
