For almost 10 years, PHI and its various entities (the PHI Centre, the PHI Foundation for Contemporary Art and PHI Studio) have been presenting works at the crossroads of contemporary art and technology, using the latest technological advances to push the limits of creative immersion. To date, PHI is the institution that has presented the most virtual reality works in the world. All of these achievements affirm PHI’s expertise as a producer and presenter of contemporary art, digital and interactive media.
Here is an overview of our international presence over the past year.
PHI Studio Experiences
With over 70,000 tickets sold in Montréal, this experience on space discovery created by PHI Studio and Felix & Paul Studios in collaboration with TIME Studios takes off for Houston, Texas on December 21 at Sawyer Yards.
This groundbreaking and immersive virtual reality experience explores the human condition of migrants and refugees as if we were crossing borders ourselves. CARNE y ARENA began its international tour at the Stanley Marketplace in Aurora, Colorado in late 2020 and was presented in Montréal in March 2021 where it sold out for 8 months. On January 21, CARNE y ARENA will start the new year in Dallas, Texas at Fair Park.
An initiative born from the pandemic, PHI VR TO GO has been a sensation in Montréal since its debut in May 2020. As of today, several other institutions have presented this project: the CENTQUATRE-Paris in France, The Film Festival in Luxembourg, the Bozar - Palais des Beaux-Arts in Belgium at the North Film Center in the United States.
Produced by long-time collaborators Felix & Paul Studios, Traveling While Black has been presented in the United States: at the Georgia Tech Institute of Technology in Atlanta and soon at the McLean Community Center in McLean, Virginia.
PHI Foundation for Contemporary Art Exhibitions
The PHI Foundation for Contemporary Art helped promote PHI internationally with the Foundation’s most visited exhibition to date featuring the legendary Yoko Ono. Since last October, Yoko Ono: GROWING FREEDOM has been on view at the Vancouver Art Gallery.
The group exhibition of nearly 30 artists from the diaspora was presented until last November at the Esker Foundation in Calgary.
The coming year promises to be equally important as the PHI Foundation for Contemporary Art celebrates its 15th anniversary and the PHI Centre celebrates its 10th anniversary. Several international tours are also on the horizon.
