"Waranara: Seeking self, seeking connection with Indigenous culture through reflection and movement"
Presented by: Sharon Carpenter
Saturday 29 October 2022 9.30am - 12.30pm AEDT (Melbourne, Australia)
Workshop Introduction:
Due to overwhelming demand, Sharon Carpenter returns with an extended version of her 2021 workshop around connection to Indigenous culture, recommended for practising and student body-focused therapists wishing to increase their cultural competency.
Therapy training and practice often focusses on research, theory and skills development, with less attention given to our human qualities and self-reflection. As humans we are the tool which facilitates connection and therapy for those we work with. To truly connect with people in a meaningful way we need to firstly listen to ourselves, reflect on our beliefs, values, qualities and responses, so we are open to listening to and authentically connecting with people from any culturally diverse background. Waranara is a Darug word from the Sydney area in NSW meaning to seek connection, to seek self. In this workshop, we will explore this concept using a range of movement and reflective practices.
Learning objectives:
- Understand the importance of listening to ourselves
- Develop increased understanding of the need to connect in a meaningful way
- Understand the importance of learning to reflect on our own beliefs and values

Workshop Introduction:
Working with people from different cultures can be a challenge from both the client and therapist point of view. Like words, movements and gestures have their own meanings and can be confusing and misunderstood. To assist in alleviating some of the stress experienced and to enhance movement multilanguage the presenters will be talking about their culture's movement and dance style and giving us an experiential movement experience for us to think about what it means for DMT. The following presenters will give us a glimpse into their culture and how they use DMT in their practice and how their culture can enhance DMT. They are:
1. Rewa Fowles with Jan McConnell - Māori Culture 2. Sarah dos Santos - Brazilian Culture 3. Ann Way - Vietnamese Culture (Order of presentation may be subject to change)
This event is suitable for practising and student dance movement therapists; creative arts therapists, somatic psychotherapists, or other therapists working with the body, who have an interest in increasing their cultural competency.
Learning objectives:
Be introduced to three diverse styles of movement communication and body awareness.
Be more aware of the subtle differences in how the body moves in other cultures and what it means for DMT practice and personal growth.
Commence exploring, understanding meanings in movement in other cultures and realising its implications when applying DMT.
To prepare for the Workshop:
Bring paper, coloured pens or pencils for drawing and writing (essential for Ann’s presentation).
Create a comfortable space where you can see, hear and move safely and freely.

Rewa Fowles with Jan McConnell as co-presenter, will share her experiences and influences of te ao Māori and her overall cultural identity navigating the world of dance movement therapy placements in Tāmaki Makaurau. Presentation 2 - Brazilian Culture Presented by Sarah dos Santos
Language and movement intertwined to create a unique dance and movement style. The African peoples who were taken to Brazil as slaves brought with them their own unique language, ways of being, moving as well as different knowledge/philosophies, religions and belief systems. In this presentation Sarah will present Yoruba, the language of the Candomblé religion of Brazil, demonstrating how the ritual words can carry the vital life force, from one person to another expressed in body movements, rhythms, mixing breathing, breath, and temperature. These movements serve to work on self-esteem and self-love by taking different elements from the movements of the Orixás like strength, self-pride, and dealing with anger and frustration from within. They are simple movements and can be repeated daily or when needed.

Presentation 3 - Vietnamese Culture Presented by Ann Way (aka Tran/Huynh Trieu An)
Vietnamese culture reflects the holistic concept of mind, body, and spirit (Tâm – Thân – Trí), emphasising that individuals are essential to their immediate environment and the universe (Phan & Silove, 1999). When Vietnamese work with Western materials or ideals, they always want to sprinkle their unique Vietnamese-ness into the works. Developing a cultural DMT approach or an indigenous psychological model to serve the Vietnamese population better is becoming important in Ann's works. In this presentation, Ann will lead a movement experiential based on her proposed Vietnamese indigenous approach to DMT. Participants, please have your paper, coloured pens or pencils for drawing and writing ready.
