1/11/22 - Dey Street Books: 2022 - $28.99
The first ever memoir from the most decorated female skier of all time, revealing never-before-told stories of her life in the fast lane, her struggle with depression, and the bold decisions that helped her break down barriers on and off the slopes.
82 World Cup wins. 20 World Cup titles. 3 Olympic medals. 7 World Championship Medals.
A fixture in the American sports landscape for almost twenty years, Lindsey Vonn is a legend. With a career that spanned a transformation in how America recognizes and celebrates female athletes, Vonn—who retired in 2019 as the most decorated American skier of all time—was in the vanguard of that change, helping blaze a trail for other world-class female athletes and reimagining what it meant to pursue speed at all costs.
In Rise, Vonn shares her incredible journey for the first time, going behind the scenes of a badass life built around resilience and risk-taking. One of the most aggressive skiers ever, Vonn offers a fascinating glimpse into the relentless pursuit of her limits, a pursuit so focused on one-upping herself that she pushed her body past its breaking point as she achieved greatness. While this iconic grit and perseverance helped her battle a catalog of injuries, these injuries came with a cost—physical, of course, but also mental. Vonn opens up about her decades-long depression and struggles with self-confidence, discussing candidly how her mental health challenges influenced her career without defining her.
Through it all, she dissects the moments that sidelined her and how, each time, she clawed her way back using an iconoclastic approach rooted in hard work—pushing boundaries, challenging expectations, and speaking her mind, even when it got her into trouble. At once empowering and raw, Rise is an inspirational look at her hard-fought success as well as an honest appraisal of the sacrifices she made along the way—an emotional journey of winning that understands all too well that every victory comes with a price.

2/1/22 - Simon & Schuster - $18.99
A “must-read” (The Washington Post) funny and practical guide to help you find, build, and keep the relationship of your dreams.
Have you ever looked around and wondered, “Why has everyone found love except me?” You’re not the only one. Great relationships don’t just appear in our lives—they’re the culmination of a series of decisions, including whom to date, how to end it with the wrong person, and when to commit to the right one. But our brains often get in the way. We make poor decisions, which thwart us on our quest to find lasting love.
Drawing from years of research, behavioral scientist turned dating coach Logan Ury reveals the hidden forces that cause those mistakes. But awareness on its own doesn’t lead to results. You have to actually change your behavior. Ury shows you how.
This “simple-to-use guide” (Lori Gottlieb, New York Times bestselling author of Maybe You Should Talk to Someone) focuses on a different decision in each chapter, incorporating insights from behavioral science, original research, and real-life stories. You’ll learn: -What’s holding you back in dating (and how to break the pattern) -What really matters in a long-term partner (and what really doesn’t) -How to overcome the perils of online dating (and make the apps work for you) -How to meet more people in real life (while doing activities you love) -How to make dates fun again (so they stop feeling like job interviews) -Why “the spark” is a myth (but you’ll find love anyway)
This “data-driven” (Time), step-by-step guide to relationships, complete with hands-on exercises, is designed to transform your life. How to Not Die Alone will help you find, build, and keep the relationship of your dreams.

February is Black History Month |
10/1/22 - University of North Carolina Press - $18.00
The twin acts of singing and fighting for freedom have been inseparable in African American history. May We Forever Stand tells an essential part of that story. With lyrics penned by James Weldon Johnson and music composed by his brother Rosamond, "Lift Every Voice and Sing" was embraced almost immediately as an anthem that captured the story and the aspirations of black Americans. Since the song's creation, it has been adopted by the NAACP and performed by countless artists in times of both crisis and celebration, cementing its place in African American life up through the present day.
In this rich, poignant, and readable work, Imani Perry tells the story of the Black National Anthem as it traveled from South to North, from civil rights to black power, and from countless family reunions to Carnegie Hall and the Oval Office. Drawing on a wide array of sources, Perry uses "Lift Every Voice and Sing" as a window on the powerful ways African Americans have used music and culture to organize, mourn, challenge, and celebrate for more than a century.

9/28/21 - Harper Perennial - $16.99
The first novel in a captivating three-book series about modern womanhood, in which a young Black woman must rely on courage, laughter, and love—and the support of her two longtime friends—to overcome an unexpected setback that threatens the most precious thing she’s ever wanted.
Tabitha Walker is a black woman with a plan to “have it all.” At 33 years old, the checklist for the life of her dreams is well underway. Education? Check. Good job? Check. Down payment for a nice house? Check. Dating marriage material? Check, check, and check. With a coveted position as a local news reporter, a "paper-perfect" boyfriend, and even a standing Saturday morning appointment with a reliable hairstylist, everything seems to be falling into place.
Then Tabby receives an unexpected diagnosis that brings her picture-perfect life crashing down, jeopardizing the keystone she took for granted: having children. With her dreams at risk of falling through the cracks of her checklist, suddenly she is faced with an impossible choice between her career, her dream home, and a family of her own.
With the help of her best friends, the irreverent and headstrong Laila and Alexis, the mom jeans-wearing former "Sexy Lexi," and the generational wisdom of her grandmother and the nonagenarian firebrand Ms. Gretchen, Tabby explores the reaches of modern medicine and tests the limits of her relationships, hoping to salvage the future she always dreamed of. But the fight is all consuming, demanding a steep price that forces an honest reckoning for nearly everyone in her life. As Tabby soon learns, her grandmother's age-old adage just might still be true: Black girls must die exhausted.

Meanwhile in present-day London, aspiring historian Caroline Parcewell spends her tenth wedding anniversary alone, running from her own demons. When she stumbles upon a clue to the unsolved apothecary murders that haunted London two hundred years ago, her life collides with the apothecary’s in a stunning twist of fate—and not everyone will survive.

2/8/22 - G.P. Putnam's Sons - $24.00
The #1 Indie Next Pick, in the vein of the classic 84, Charing Cross Road and Meet Me at the Museum, this witty and tender novel follows two women in 1960s America as they discover that food really does connect us all, and that friendship and laughter are the best medicine.
When twenty-seven-year-old Joan Bergstrom sends a fan letter—as well as a gift of saffron—to fifty-nine-year-old Imogen Fortier, a life-changing friendship begins. Joan lives in Los Angeles and is just starting out as a writer for the newspaper food pages. Imogen lives on Camano Island outside Seattle, writing a monthly column for a Pacific Northwest magazine, and while she can hunt elk and dig for clams, she’s never tasted fresh garlic—exotic fare in the Northwest of the sixties. As the two women commune through their letters, they build a closeness that sustains them through the Cuban Missile Crisis, the assassination of President Kennedy, and the unexpected in their own lives.
Food and a good life—they can’t be separated. It is a discovery the women share, not only with each other, but with the men in their lives. Because of her correspondence with Joan, Imogen’s decades-long marriage blossoms into something new and exciting, and in turn, Joan learns that true love does not always come in the form we expect it to. Into this beautiful, intimate world comes the ultimate test of Joan and Imogen’s friendship—a test that summons their unconditional trust in each other.
A brief respite from our chaotic world, Love & Saffron is a gem of a novel, a reminder that food and friendship are the antidote to most any heartache, and that human connection will always be worth creating.

From the New York Times bestselling author of Enders Game comes a brand-new series following a teen who wakes up on an abandoned Earth to discover that he’s a clone!
Laz is a side-stepper: a teen with the incredible power to jump his consciousness to alternate versions of himself in parallel worlds. All his life, there was no mistake that a little side-stepping couldn’t fix.
Until Laz wakes up one day in a cloning facility on a seemingly abandoned Earth.
Laz finds himself surrounded by hundreds of other clones, all dead, and quickly realizes that he too must be a clone of his original self. Laz has no idea what happened to the world he remembers as vibrant and bustling only yesterday, and he struggles to survive in the barren wasteland he’s now trapped in. But the question that haunts him isn’t why was he created, but instead, who woke him up...and why?
There’s only a single bright spot in Laz’s new life: one other clone appears to still be alive, although she remains asleep. Deep down, Laz believes that this girl holds the key to the mysteries plaguing him, but if he wakes her up, she’ll be trapped in this hellscape with him.
This is one problem that Laz can’t just side-step his way out of.

The Violin Conspiracy by Brendan Slocumb
The Violin Conspiracy is listed as a mystery and while the theft of a 10-million-dollar violin is at the heart of the book the story is so much more than the theft and who stole it. It is about music and how someone who is a true musician can forget the terrible things around him and just live for the music. It is a story about the violin itself and what it meant to a poor slave boy who was subjected to horrors we cant imagine. And most of all it is the story of Ray and how his grandmother, his violin, his mentor, and those few who believed a young black boy could become a famous classical violinist helped him to become the man and the musician he came to be. I know absolutely nothing about classical music, and there was a lot that went over my head, but this was written in such a way that even I was moved by Rays dedication and how much music meant to him. This should be read by every aspiring musician, especially those who have experienced prejudice as Ray did. It is a lesson in how to rise above the slights and the injustice and become the best person you can be.

The Lost Village by Camilla Sten
When an entire village of 900 people in a very isolated rural area of Sweden totally disappear and the only humans left are a newborn infant found in a schoolhouse and a woman tied to a post who has been stoned to death you know this would be the perfect back drop for a creepy ghostly horror story and this is exactly what Camilla Stern has produced. Alice's grandmother left the small village right before the disappearance, so Alice has heard the story about Silverjarn her entire life. As an adult and an aspiring film producer she raises money and together with a crew of 4 of her friends plans a 5-day excursion to Silverjarn to take pictures and gather information for a documentary film based on the disappearance. From the beginning chapter when you realize the total isolation of the village and how inexperienced the group is you know terrible things are going to happen. And do they ever! Told from two story lines the first from Elsa, Alices great grandmother, starting from a few months before the disappearance - the second from Alices point of view in the present Stern's atmospheric writing builds up the dread of what is to come from the first page to the amazing and surprising ending. Read this one with the lights on!

Deep into the Dark by P.J. Tracy
I loved PJ Tracy’s Monkee Wrench series, so I am not sure how the first book in their new series got past me, but it is never too late to rave about a great book. As the title implies the first in the series is a little darker than their other series but the new characters while damaged, will engage you from the first page. – Maggie, a police detective ( the only one in her family who chose not to serve her country in the military) and whose only brother was just killed in action in Afghanistan, Sam, a decorated war hero who is battling severe PTSD complete with hallucinations and dreams so real he isn’t quite sure if they are really dreams who now works as a bar back, and Melody a bar maid at the same bar where Sam works who left a life of abuse and addiction and is determined to forget her past and make something of her life as soon as she finishes her last semester of college. There is a serial killer of young women in a seedy part of town and also a seemingly unrelated killer (with ties to both Sam and Melody). Melody is convinced that Sam cannot be a killer because he reminds her of her brother, but her partner is convinced that he and Melody are both involved.

When You Get the Chance by Emma Lord
Millie was raised by her dad and her aunt after her mom dropped her off as a baby when her dad was in college. She's never really felt the loss, but now she's been accepted into a prestigious musical arts program, and her dad is not on board, so she's hoping that her mom might be able to help bring him around, since all she knows about the woman is that she is also into musical theater. After finding her dad's LiveJournal (OMG, the millennial nostalgia!), Millie narrows it down to three possibilities, and the summer of Millie Mia commences. Along the way, Millie makes new friends, forges new relationships, and has to confront herself in ways she never has before, all set to a Broadway background. Theater fans will love this book that is more than anything about family, both what it means and who gets to be part of it.

The Soulmate Equation by Christina Lauren
Jessica has resigned herself to a life of single motherhood with her daughter, her grandparents, and her best friend Fizzy. When Fizzy talks Jessica into submitting a sample to a new company for their DNADuo genetic matchmaking service, she's surprised when she gets a match. But not just any match -- 98%, higher than anyone else they've matched before, and with none other than the founding scientist, River. Skepticism runs rampant, as rude, arrogant, stubborn River is not someone Jessica would ever have imagined herself with. As Jessica and River get to know each other, though, they both have to wrestle with what soulmate means to them and whether they have room for that and each other in their lives. This is my favorite Christina Lauren novel so far.

Malice by Heather Walter

Alyce is the Dark Grace, so called because her powers can only be used for ill, unlike her Grace counterparts whose light magic is used for beauty and song and all things good. Understandably, Alyce is tired of living in Briar, where her talents -- and indeed her very existence -- are maligned. But then she meets the princess Aurora, who wants to make the kingdom of Briar different, to accept Alyce and free her of society's constraints, and Alyce is no longer sure where she belongs anymore. Maleficent meets Cinderella in this Sleeping Beauty origin story of sorts that challenges the reader's notions of good and bad and whether the end justifies the means.

Educated by Tara Westover
Not since The Glass Castle has a memoir significantly moved me like Educated has. Tara Westovers description of her family is harsh and stark while at the same time haunting and beautiful. Her unconventional upbringing by conservative Mormon parents in Idaho is fascinating, and you will not be able to put down this book until you absorb every word. And even then it will not leave you.

American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins
This powerful novel is about the journey of one woman, Lydia, and her young son as they try to escape to the US from their home in Mexico. Their treacherous journey to get away from an angry drug lord mirrors the stories of other migrants they meet along the way. Jeanine Cummins has written an excellent novel on the difficult paths of the migrants and their reasons for heading north. A real page-turner! (Seconded by Melissa!)

I Must Betray You by Ruta Sepetys
Ruta Sepetys has done it again. In I Must Betray You, readers follow the story of 17-year-old Cristian Florescu, a teenager growing up in Communist Romania in the late 1980's. Everyone knows that informers are on every corner - your neighbors, your classmates, your friends. Your family. But it's only when Cristian is forced to become an informer himself that he realizes just how deep the betrayals go - and how far he'll have to fight not only for his own freedom, but for the freedom of his country. Sepetys is the master of bringing to light the parts of history that have been shoved under the rug, and I Must Betray You is no exception to the nature of her intense, heartbreaking, beautiful collection of works. A must read.

The Kitchen Front by Jennifer Ryan
This is a history of life during WWII in England, but told from the standpoint of the women at home, who are on a different type front line. Audrey is a widow struggling to keep her home and feed her children, Gwen is her estranged sister and the Lady of the local manor, Nell is a kitchen maid and Zelda is a disgraced aspiring chef. These women have absolutely nothing in common, other than all are entered into a wartime cooking contest where the prize is a job on The Kitchen Front radio show. During the minor food and supplies shortages we have experienced in 2020 many have found interesting substitutes. We have experienced nothing compared to these women. What unfolds is a powerful story of resilience, creativity, and love in the most unlikely places. A wonderful story of life in WWII and the strength of women under pressure.

Killer View by Iris Johansen
Roy Johansen has done a great job letting Jessie Mercado shine as the main character in this series. She has been a counterpart to Kendra Michaels in several books and has always grabbed attention. Kendra plays a very small role and the book is so engaging even the most loyal Kendra fans will not be disappointed. We are also introduced to an industry new to most of us, managing the affairs of the incarcerated. As you may imagine most of the customers of this industry are perpetrators of financial crimes, but not all. Jessie is supposed to find a missing person, one of the partners of this unique company. It all seems on the up and up, but the deeper she digs the more dirt she finds. Accepting help has never been easy for Jessie, but her survival may depend upon trusting and using those closest to her. This is a fast paced book any suspense fan will enjoy.

Wildwood Whispers by Willa Reece
Once I started this book I did not want any interruptions until I finished reading. The mysticism of Appalachia comes to life on the pages of the book. Mel is in the foster system and has learned all the pitfalls of the system, but cares for no one until Sarah arrives at her foster home. Sarah is otherworldly to Mel, she is kind, timid and becomes Mel's family. They bond and escape terrible situations together, but Sarah always wants to return home to the Wildwood where she was born and raised. Mel would do anything for Sarah so she grants that wish and begins a journey with a cast of characters she could have never even imagined. I won't go into detail here as the discoveries are best made when you read this touching and heart grabbing book.

There are no limits to what I love to read, however I tend to gravitate to mystery/thriller action stories that are fast paced with lots of twists and turns that keep you guessing all the way to the end. There is nothing I love more than an ending that comes completely out of left field that I never saw coming.

The Torqued Man by Peter Mann
If you are one who makes your decision on which books to read based on the flyleaf summary, do yourself a favor and DO NOT read the summary for this one. The genre of World War II spy novels starring a gay Abwehr agent suffering through his feelings and unrequited love of the Irish anti-fascist spy he directs is likely a very slim one. It could mean you would miss out on a true gem. You may instead want to follow the four word blurb provided by Alan Furst for this one: 'A damn good read.' Peter Mann has crafted a compelling and classic spy novel with incredibly complex characters who are as flawed as the times they live in. Even better, Mann has created an intricate story with twists and turns that you don't see coming in a way that keeps you turning the pages into the wee hours. The Torqued Man is an outstanding read which I highly recommend.
