Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Christ’s
Love”
Aim:
Compare Christ’s
love for the church with the relationships among family members;
Appreciate
Christ’s
sacrifice to show love and care for the church;
and Accept
responsibility
for showing love in the family as Christ demonstrated love for the
church.
Background:
Ephesians
5:21-6:4
Bible
Lesson:
Ephesians
5:21-6:4
“Submitting
yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” Ephesians 5:21 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
book of Ephesians is a letter written by the Apostle Paul to
believers in Ephesus. This portion of Paul’s letter addresses
God’s instructions
for Christian family members, father, mother, and children.
-
Wives’
Submission Should
Reflect Christ’s Authority Over the Church
(Ephesians 5:21-24): Paul
opens this section of his letter admonishing believers to submit to
one another. In other words, demonstrate respect and honor for each
other as fellow believers in Jesus Christ.
Paul
explains
that wives should be submissive to their husbands. Submission here
means a
wife
should
show respect and esteem for her
husband and the
father of their
children.
The husband in turn is
to
live in such a way that makes it easy for his
wife to submit to
him because she
has no doubt of her husband’s devotion and dedication to the
well
being of their
family as he endeavors
to follow
God’s plan. The perfect example of this relationship is how
the
Church
is
to be
submissive
to Christ, the Cornerstone of the Church.
The
husband is the head of the family as Christ is the head of the
church. This
headship is not to lord over the wife, but to be responsible for
family provisions and protection.
- Husband’s
Love for their Wives Should Reflect Christ’s Love for the Church
(Ephesians 5:25-33):
Paul
calls upon husbands to love their wives sacrificially like Jesus
Christ loves
the Church.
Jesus Christ gave his very life for the Church
to
pay the sin debt which brought humankind back into
right relationship with God by cleansing believers from their sins.
Jesus Christ is the Word made flesh such that trusting Him as Lord
and Savior allows believers to be born again and to become new
creations purposed for
righteous
living.
The church is
characterized as a bride preparing to be wed to a bridegroom. As a
bride leaves no stone unturned in preparing for her wedding
ceremony, Christ’s death for the Church
prepares the Church
to be presented to Himself
as a glorious bride without spot, an outward stain, or wrinkle,
inward manifestation of an
inward
flaw. Paul further explains that husbands should exhibit a love for
their wives and treat them as they would treat their own bodies.
Most reasonable husbands would never think of mistreating or hurting
themselves on purpose. Likewise, because of their love for their
wives,
husbands
should never mistreat, hurt, or harm their wives. When
a man leaves his parents and takes to himself a wife, the man and
woman become one meaning they both seek to honor and to
show respect
to
the
other person
before
themselves, individually. Paul describes this relationship and
phenomena as a mystery because humankind are born selfish not
selfless. The love that Christ has for the church is likewise
incomprehensible when one examines the selfish behavior of humankind
until being born again in Christ. Paul closes this section directing
the husband to love his wife as himself and for the wife to in turn
to respect her husband. How
beautiful it is to
see husbands
and wives exhibiting
behaviors that are
obedient to God’s Word in their relationship!
-
Children
Should Be Obedient and Loved (Ephesians
6:1-4):
Paul
turns
his attention to the children of the family. He admonishes the
children to obey their parents, father and mother, because they
belong to the Lord. A
child
is
a gift from God. Children
come about through the love that a husband and
wife has for each
other.
God entrusts
to them a tiny human being to be
nurtured
and cared
for as they raise them in the way of the Lord. Paul states the
benefit of a child honoring and
respecting his father and mother,
things
will
go
well for the child and longevity to
them,
which includes
richness of life. Finally, Paul directs fathers to not treat their
children harshly, but to seek God guidance in their instruction and
discipline. When
parents and children diligently pursue
the will of God in their interaction and in
maintaining
the God commanded
order of the family, this
creates
a loving harmonious home environment for all to observe and to
pattern.
Take
Aways:
-
There is a God directed order for the family, Father, Mother, and
child.
-
God commands husbands to love our wives as we love ourselves
-
God commands that children are to obey and to honor their father and
mother.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Train
up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not
depart from it.” Proverbs
22:6 KJV
“I
am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the
sheep.” John
10:11 KJV
“For
when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the
ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet
peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die. But God
commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners,
Christ died for us.” Romans
5:6-8 KJV
“Greater
love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his
friends.” John
15:13 KJV
“And
said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall
cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore
they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined
together, let not man put asunder.” Matthew
19:5-6 KJV
