A sense of community and shared identity sits within the fibres of our being as humans. In the evolutionary period, we craved community as it would prevent us from starving. While modern situations aren’t quite so drastic we still require a feeling of belonging and our mental health goes askew if we are made to feel shunned or labelled the ‘outsider’.

The innate human desire can be seen in technology and the way in which we develop technological communities through social media. This is to say that the need will carry over into web3. Nevertheless, there is some thought and feeling that the way we build our identities online could become less about having an identity for each unique platform and much more about consistency, transparency and ownership. Despite being widely mocked online, former US president Donald Trump’s collection of digital trading cards have sold out in less than a day, netting US$4.5m in sales.

The cost for the NFTs was US$99 each and 45,000 were put on sale. As with other NFTs, the purchaser holds ownership of the specific digital Trump card, but the image itself can be widely copied and shared by anyone online.

The Washington Post said that ''Trump's NFTs are not art - unless you consider grifting an art form. These $99 trading cards are laughably bad''.

The cards featured what appeared to be risibly amateurish images of the former president playing golf, posing as an astronaut, surrounded by bars of gold and shooting lasers from his eyes.

This latest entrepreneurial endeavor from a businessman with myriad failures and bankruptcies seems to be a belated effort to cash in on the market for “non-fungible tokens.”

If the images seen on the website are similar to the digital images that will be transferred to anyone who pays the $99 fee, then the Trump cards will feature clumsy Photoshop pictures of the former president’s face grafted onto reasonably fit male bodies, clad in various costumes of masculine bravado, including sporting garb, a sheriff’s duster and lots of blue suits.
