Today's Bible Study Lesson
“According
to the Promise”
Aim:
Review Mary's song praising God's faithfulness;
Appreciate
the faithfulness of God's people from generation to generation;
and Examine
areas in our lives where our faithfulness to God can be strengthened.
Background: Luke
1:26–56; Galatians
3:6–18
Bible
Lesson: Luke
1:46–55
“And
Mary said, My soul doth magnify the Lord, And my spirit hath rejoiced
in God my Saviour” Luke 1:46–47, KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
Gospel according to
Luke
was written by Luke the
physician who was a frequent
companion of Paul.
Luke begins with the record
of the birth of John the Baptist or the Baptizer. Zechariah and
Elizabeth were up in age and for many years had prayed for a child,
but their prayers
had gone unanswered. Zechariah was a priest and during his turn to
burn incense in the temple, an angel appeared and told him that
their prayer would be answered with a baby boy who would be a very
special child. His name was to be John. Zechariah’s
skepticism resulted in him
becoming
mute
until the birth of their
child, John. Elizabeth was an older cousin of Mary, who was
chosen by God to bring
Jesus Christ into the world. Shortly after Mary was told of her
upcoming pregnancy, she went to visit Elizabeth, who by now was six
months
pregnant with John the Baptizer, the forerunner of Jesus Christ. Our
lesson begins as Mary sings a song of praise to God for His
Graciousness toward her. The
section of scripture in
our study is called “The
Magnificat: Mary’s Song of Praise.”
-
God’s
Personal Blessing on Mary (Luke 1:46–49): Mary
expresses her praise to God from deep within her soul, for being
selected byGod
to
bring Jesus Christ into the world. She notes
how the Lord had chosen her, a young girl around 15 years old, from
a poor village, Nazareth. Mary identifies herself as a lowly servant
girl blessed with the magnificent opportunity to bear the incarnate
of God. She also recognized that her act of obedience would be
recognized and remembered for generations to come. Mary acknowledged
that God had done great things for her. God blesses each of us with
opportunities to contribute
to the upbuilding of His kingdom and we should be as appreciative,
thankful and obedient as that
which is exhibited
by Mary.
- God’s
Blessings on His People (Luke 1:50–53):
Next,
Mary recognizes the mercy which God bestows
upon her
as well as those
who, from generation to generation, show respect and reverence for
Him. God uses His unlimited power to care for His own. Mary
perhaps was thinking of how God brought the Hebrew people out of
Egyptian bondage or when God
parted the Red Sea to allow the Hebrew people to
cross
over
on dry land or when God kept the three Hebrew boys from being
consumed in the fiery furnace or when God protected Daniel from the
lions in their den of execution. Mary
exclaimed that God scattered the
proud,
those who think more highly of themselves than they ought and act
accordingly. God brought down princes from their thrones and exalted
the humble. Maybe
Mary reflected upon God bringing down King Saul for his
disobedience
or God exalting David from
a shepherd
boy to King or God causing Haman to be impaled on the scaffold that
he had
constructed
for Mordecai and instead God
caused
Mordecai to be exalted into a position of power. Jesus
came to earth to
feed
those who hunger and thirst after
righteousness, while those religious folks who thought they did not
need Jesus’ gift of eternal life went away hunger not recognizing
the true value of the Gospel.
-
God’s
Faithfulness in Sending the Messiah (Luke
1:54–55):
Many
years passed from the time that God gave the covenant promise to
Abraham until
the time of
its fulfillment. Mary acknowledged and testified to God’s
faithfulness to Israel. Despite the many times that Israel strayed
from God in disobedience, God heard their prayers and pleas for help
in their
times of trouble and God
faithfully
provided divine deliverance. God’s
greatest and most wonderful act
of faithfulness
is
the
gift of His Son, Jesus Christ, who was promised to those who will
accept
Him as Lord and Savior.
Take
Aways:
-
God is forever Faithful and can be trusted to Keep His Promises.
-
We must express our appreciation for every Blessing from God!
-
Blessings from God come to us personally and corporately.
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:

us hold fast the profession of [our] faith without wavering; (for he

sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John

“I
will praise the LORD according to his righteousness: and will sing
praise to the name of the LORD most high.” Psalms

“Praise
him for his mighty acts: praise him according to his excellent
greatness.” Psalms

because he trusteth in thee.” Isaiah
