To all our “beloved” of St. Philip Neri Parish,
Greetings and blessings to you, your family and friends, and summer visitors, from Fr. Mike Dechant OMI
“Just as bread from the earth, when it receives the invocation of the Holy Spirit, is no longer common bread but the Eucharist, made up of two elements – one earthly and one heavenly – so also our bodies. In receiving the Eucharist, we are no longer corruptible, for we have the hope of Resurrection”. (From the insights and spiritual inspiration of St. Irenaeus)
A little girl went into the local pharmacy. She approached the counter politely, waiting for the pharmacist to attend her needs. He was too busy talking to another gentleman. She waited patiently, but to no avail. She gently tapped one of her coins on the glass counter, hoping to gain his attention. Only after the second “gentle” tap did he respond, “What do you want? Can’t you see I’m talking with my brother?” She retorted, “I too want to talk to you about my brother. Can I buy a miracle? I have some money!”
This time the other gentleman stepped forward and asked, “Why do you need a miracle for your little brother?” She said, “I heard my Mommy say to my Daddy, ‘If he doesn’t get help soon, the big lump in his head will take his life’”. The gentleman asked, “How much money do you have?” “One dollar and 11 cents”, she said … “I’m hoping that will buy him the miracle he needs” … and she counted out one dollar and 11 cents.
The gentleman took the money and asked the little girl to take him to meet her brother. She didn’t realize that the pharmacist’s brother was a noted neurological surgeon. After some consultation, the little fellow got his operation … and all was well.
The family was filled with such gratitude - however the mother asked the surgeon, “I can’t imagine how much a surgery like that would cost”. He replied, “One dollar and 11 cents … and the faith and determination of a little girl!”
If you need a miracle, each (Sunday’s) Eucharist is a miracle – when the passion and death and resurrection of Jesus is re-lived on the altar (Note: The Greek word is called “Zikkaron” – when a past event is re-enacted before our very eyes.) The miracle “of the cross” is before our very eyes of faith … and our “YES”, our “Amen” is all it costs for God to love us and transform us to life.
During the Eucharistic Prayer, as we ask the Holy Spirit to change this bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ, we end the prayer with “Do this in memory of me”. “In memory” is not just to recall some past event, but more so to re-member the Body of Christ. We know, we see – in our lives and in the lives of so many others – that the Body is broken, even killed, before our very eyes. How do we heal these deep and painful memories, these tragic events – by saying “YES” to the Body of Christ, to bring the Body of Christ back together again … “to re-member”!
May we always believe that “God is good …. ALL the time”!
So … wherever you go, go with God. And, whenever you go, go make a difference!
Peace to you and all your family … Fr. Mike
Praise be Jesus Christ … and Mary Immaculate
St. Philip Neri … pray for us
St. Eugene de Mazenod … pray for us
St. Kateri Tekakwitha … pray for us

Dear Parishioners of St. Philip Neri Parish,
THE BODY AND
BLOOD OF THE LORD
The good news of Trinity Sunday is our participation in the mystery of God’s life. This Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ also celebrates our participation in divine life: we eat the Bread of Life and drink the Wine of Compassion, the Risen Lord’s very presence.
His words, like all words, had a certain power. Indeed, his words stirred hearts, healed people, and brought about conversions. But at a time, they too became inadequate. Something more was needed. So, on the night before his death, having exhausted what he could do with words, Jesus went beyond them. He gave us the Eucharist, his physical embrace, a ritual to hold us to his heart.
Clearly on the occasion of the multiplication of the loaves, we see that human nourishment is much more than bread. The apostles had just returned from their mission and their preaching had stirred a spiritual hunger. Crowds began to come and search them out in a remote place. They were in fact, so spirituality nourished by the teaching and healing power of Christ, that they were unaware of their bodily hunger or their need for shelter. Our hunger for communion is as great or greater than our hunger for food.
There is a story of a train experience in Italy. It was a slow train that stopped at every town and village between Florence and Rome. People boarded the train loaded with bundles and baskets and children in hand. The train cabin, which could hold eight people comfortably, was jammed with 15 or 16 people. When the train car would sway, those who were standing would tumble onto those who were seated. It was uncomfortable and as the long trek wore on, tempers began to fray.
Then the train stopped in the middle of nowhere for reasons that were never explained. As the minutes passed, everyone at first avoided eye contact and seemed uncomfortable. But then an old farmer opened a bag of pistachios and passed them around. They were delicious. Then someone else passed around a bottle of chianti. Soon, everyone was reaching in their bundles for food and water and candy and wine, and a feast was celebrated. When the train jolted into motion again, the jostling returned, but this time everyone smiled and laughed. And some of those who had been jealously guarding their prized seats stood and let others rest their feet.
Is this not a version of the miracle of the loaves and fishes - which would be the more impressive today, an actual multiplication of loaves and fish or thousands of people sharing their food with each other? Around the world, more than enough food is produced to feed the global population—but as many as 811 million people still go hungry.
Every Lord's Day we come together as that Body, as a community, to say thanks to him and hence the name "Eucharist" which means "thanks". It is regrettable, if "going to Mass" is just a private affair and others only "happen" to be there. Perhaps we may even resent that there is too much talk and activity. Why can’t I be "left in peace to say my prayers?”
Perhaps some Mass celebrations can be overactive or intrusive but, on the other hand, it is not a time for contemplative prayer. One can do that much better at home. We tend to narrow our consideration of the Eucharist to the sacramental elements of bread and wine. Eucharist is more—our own commitment to give ourselves to others as Jesus gives himself to us. The whole point of being at Mass is to celebrate joyfully together as a community of the disciples of Jesus. Jesus is in the host, but he is also in the hand that gives the host and in the hand of the one who receives.
When the famous historian Christopher Dawson decided to become a Roman Catholic, his aristocratic mother was distressed, not because she had any aversion to Catholic dogma, but because now her son would, in her words, have to "worship with the help", the servants. She was painfully aware that, in church at least, his aristocratic background would no longer set him apart from others or above anyone. At church, he would be just an equal among equals because the Eucharist would strip him of his higher social status.
She is the one who should have been baptized because she understood Eucharist correctly. “Gentile or Jew” …. The Eucharist, among other things, calls us to justice, to disregard the distinction between rich and poor, noble and peasant, aristocrat and servant, the sound and the mentally challenged, both around the Eucharist table itself and afterwards outside of the church.
“Do this in remembrance.” A pastor tells the story of two brothers. Bruce brought his brother Richard, who is mentally challenged, to Mass with him. Richard has a great heart and lives more openly what we all hunger for. Bruce was trying to keep Richard quiet as he tried, several times to say, “Bless the priest”. Bruce later told me that when he visits his brother on the weekend, Richard greets him at the door not with, “Hello how are you?”, but ‘Thank you, God, for bringing my brother to visit me.’ Later he sits and watches TV and plays with his calculator not paying any attention to Bruce and then all of a sudden “Thank you God for bringing my brother to visit me.” Is that not communion? Being aware of the caring presence of the other. “Fratelli tutti”.
Only communion, unity, will nourish us. If we see housework or cooking simply as chores to get through, we will get tired and irritable. If we weed the garden without an awareness of God’s gift of creation and the moist earth, we will find no recreation, no nourishment. We become peaceful, and spiritually enriched, only when we discover that we live united with God and our brothers and sisters in the present chore, meeting, celebration, or encounter. “Fratelli tutti”.
Most often we refer to the Eucharist as "communion". But we should understand that the communal aspect of the Eucharist is far more than a group of people sharing a common meal. It is the union of those who share the Body of Christ and share now the common mission to live like Christ. In His Body, we are re-membered (brought together as members of the Body), and re-united to each other in a sacred experience for a common mission.

A Prayer for Ukraine
God of peace and justice, we pray for the people of Ukraine today. We pray for peace and the laying down of weapons. We pray for all those who fear for tomorrow, that your spirit of comfort would draw near to them. We pray for those with power over war or peace, for wisdom, discernment and compassion to guide their decisions. Above all, we pray for all your precious children at risk and in fear that you would hold and protect them. We pray in the name of Jesus the Prince of Peace. Amen.

Parish Celebration for Father Ken!
Thank you for your participation and help!
Thanks to all those who came out this past Sunday afternoon to celebrate Fr. Ken's 50th Anniversary of his Ordination! We packed the place! Thanks also to the Parish Pastoral Council and all the many wonderful volunteers who helped to gather and prepare the food, set up the gym, serve the food, and clean up after our delicious BBQ gathering. A great time was had by all, as this was our first opportunity to come together for a big Parish event and have a good visit with fellow parishioners in over two years! It was also a wonderful way to honour our dear friend, Fr. Ken, as we congratulated him and wished him well for his move to Vancouver in early September.

Grow Hope Saskatchewan
Bruno Cherry Festival!
Grow Hope Saskatchewan invites you to come out for their 2022 Field Day at the Bruno Cherry Festival on August 7! Starting at 9:00 am and continuing throughout the day, there will be a booth set up to celebrate our growing season and provide opportunities to learn more about the work being done by our collective agencies abroad. In addition, there will be an opportunity to meet one of our farming families in the Bruno area and tour acres of land donated to help feed those in need around the world. Come out for all the fun of the Bruno Cherry festival and witness the solidarity of farmers, staff, volunteers, and donors teaming up to help raise money for hungry people in the Global South!
Grow Hope Saskatchewan is again bringing together donors and farmers to feed the hungry! Saskatchewan urban and rural residents will again come together to support Canadian Foodgrains Bank in supporting people around the world who need emergency food assistance, as well as improving long-term food security. How it works: Generous farmers in Saskatchewan have donated land and agreed to grow a crop for Grow Hope Saskatchewan. It costs about $350 per acre to provide seed, fertilizer, fuel and other inputs. Donors from all walks of life are invited to sponsor a partial acre, full acre or multiple acres to help cover these input costs. After harvest, the farmers sell that crop and donate the proceeds to Canadian Foodgrains Bank. The federal government matches these donations at four-to-one. Find more information and/or sponsor this year’s growing effort at the Grow Hope Saskatchewan website: www.growhopesk.ca
NOTE: Development and Peace/Caritas Canada is one of the partner agencies in this project. Catholics can write a cheque to “Development and Peace” ear-marked for “Grow Hope Saskatchewan” in the memo line and mail it to: Development & Peace/Caritas Canada, 1425 René-Lévesque Blvd West, 3rd Floor, Montreal QC. Pilgrim Journeys
A Post-Vatican II Ministry of Discovering the Sacred with Parish and Travel Pilgrims by Ralph Leo Kleiter
Ralph Leo Kleiter, priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Saskatoon, Canada shares the unique story of one who experienced the time before the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) and the following years that energized him. With the help of his daily journal, files and memory he writes candidly and highlights his “steppingstones” and “turning points”.
In twelve chapters, with meticulous details, his narrative outlines his rural Saskatchewan formation and religious institutional education; the background and interesting events in all the parishes he served; and his global experiences and outreach through a Ministry to Tourism he established. In several sections, the reader will be able to really feel the author’s presence within the narrative.

A Few Chuckles for Dad on Father's Day!
Son: For $20, I’ll be good.
Dad: Oh, yeah? When I was your age, I was good for nothing.
Dad Wisdom: I know what I’m getting for Father’s Day. Last night my daughter asked me what size aftershave I wear.
“While having their evening dinner together, a little girl looked up at her father and asked, “Daddy, you’re the boss in our family, right?” The father was very pleased to hear it and confidently replied, “Yes, my little princess.” The girl then continued, “That’s because Mommy put you in charge, right?”
Happy Father's Day!
