CSO Podcast Series Celebrating 50 Years of Coastal Zone Management
For 50 years, the Coastal Zone Management Act has been a critical tool in the management of our nation's coasts. Join CSO's Executive Director, Derek Brockbank, in a five part podcast series each Tuesday to learn about the basis of the act, why it’s important, how it’s changed, and more.
The first installment of the series is available on the Capitol Beach Podcast page, or wherever you listen to your podcasts. In this installment, Derek is joined by NOAA Administrator, Dr. Rick Spinrad, and former CSO Executive Director and current Director of the Urban Coast Institute at Monmouth University, Tony MacDonald, who provide historical perspective on the CZMA, one of our nation's landmark conservation laws, as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.

Great Lakes Commission releases new video highlighting habitat restoration at Powderhorn Lake
The Great Lakes Commission (GLC) released a video highlighting work to restore wetlands and reduce flooding at Powderhorn Lake near Chicago. The video
shows how a collaborative effort between local, state, regional and federal organizations is restoring more than 100 acres of wetlands, connecting the lake to its northern neighbor, Wolf Lake, and ultimately Lake Michigan.
This project highlights use of Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) dollars in the state of Illinois. The video even shows Loren Wobig, IDNR Office of Water Resources Director and Great Lakes Commissioner, pitching a shovel load of dirt!

Chicago Beach Research in JGLR
Coastal Geologist with the Illinois State Geological Survey (ISGS) Robin Mattheus and colleagues Katie Braun and Ethan Theuerkauf recently published a new research paper in the Journal for Great Lakes Research.
This new study used GIS to analyze how Chicago’s pocket beaches responded to the 2012-2020 lake level rise. The study visually affirms what’s happened to the beaches and applies numbers to those changes, as well as distinguishes patterns of change based on individual beach characteristics. CMP will continue working with Robin and ISGS as this study progresses with the intent of translating findings and applying them to planning efforts and infrastructure projects. Reach out to Casey Sebetto (casey.sebetto@illinois.gov) with any questions or to learn more!

Earth Day at the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum |
|
Ravenswood Media and Chicago Academy of Sciences / Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum present the history of the Calumet region as seen through the lens of the Anthropocene, our current epoch when humans have overwhelmed the Earth’s natural systems.
Wolf Lake sits at the epicenter of the Calumet region just 20 miles south of the Nature Museum and its challenges over the last 200 years represent important lessons for humanity navigating the Anthropocene. This event will share these lessons with the public through an evening of a film screening, presentations from scientists and environmental historians and end with questions from the audience.

Great Lakes Sediment and Nutrient Reduction Program RFP
Deadline: April 22, 2022
For more than 30 years, the Great Lakes Sediment and Nutrient Reduction Program has provided grants to reduce nutrients and sediments from entering the Great Lakes. This year’s program will continue to help local partners take action to reduce nutrient loads from agricultural watersheds, reduce untreated stormwater runoff, and restore shoreline and streambanks in the Great Lakes basin.
Through the program, nonfederal units of government, tribes, and incorporated nonprofit organizations are eligible to receive grants for up to $200,000, supporting work over a period of up to three years. Sea Grant’s Community Engaged Internship |
|
The Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant (IISG), in cooperation with Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, Illinois, is offering a CEI opportunity to support conservation policy efforts for the Shedd Aquarium. Sea Grant’s Community Engaged Internship (CEI) aims to broaden participation in coastal, ocean, Great Lakes, and marine sciences by offering paid internships to undergraduate students from under-resourced, underrepresented and/or indigenous and tribal populations. The CEI is a national program involving Sea Grant state programs and other partners.
This paid, full-time summer internship will be 10-12 weeks long, depending on the intern’s availability, starting no later than June 1 2022. The intern will have the choice to work remotely, in-person at the Shedd Aquarium, or a hybrid schedule. If the status of COVID worsens, the intern can work completely remotely. Occasional travel may be possible for the internship, depending on travel status policies. For questions about this opportunity, please email Angela Archer at amcbride@purdue.edu.
