The Idea
If you consider the timeline from when our earth exists, one would find the human lifespan extremely short.
Earth has come into existence almost 4.5 billion years ago, whereas, most humans live mostly up to 80 years (the number also decreasing now).
In terms of weeks, we would at best live 4000 weeks (80 years).
And so, humans always wanted to make the most of their time. In the modern day, that's what we call productivity.
Everyone just loves the word productivity. That's why there are multiple best-selling books on this and multiple gurus on the internet on productivity. The demand for productivity experts is just too much.
In fact, I have seen people on the internet (mostly YouTube) advising others to track every hour of their life.
Anything, when stretched beyond a certain limit becomes fragile.
With regard to productivity, we have perhaps reached that state. In the name of productivity, these productivity gurus are advising others to behave less like humans and more like machines.
A machine is an ultimate example of productivity, right? No human can beat machines in productivity.
If you think deeply, productivity beyond a point is just a marketing gimmick.
100 year back, there was no washing machine, no dishwasher, and no vacuum cleaner.
Once people got all of these, they perhaps thought to relax as machines can do some of their jobs.
But did they really become less busy?
They in fact became busier. You can see your mother for example.
You also perhaps wonder that if only a machine can do some of your jobs, you could then relax a little bit.
But trust me, even if that happens someday, you will only become busier.
This is precisely what the productivity trap is.
You feel becoming productive will help you save more time, but only to your disappointment it only makes your life more overwhelming.
Don't get me wrong, I don't mean you become lazy instead of productive.
Productivity is great as long as you are considering in the human realm.
When I say human realm, I mean humans are not designed to extract work (or some sort of productivity) from every hour of their lives.
Humans are supposed to work passionately when requires and rest at other times.
Somedays humans feel low in energy, so he/she can sit in the room and wonder. But some days, humans feel energetic and work their ass off.
Only machines can work continuously, without interruption.
Do you want to compare your productivity with a machine (or humans who are striving to be a machine)?
Don't forget, you have hardly 3500-4000 weeks to live. You are mortal. Going to die someday.
You will hardly think about your productivity on your deathbed. But you would perhaps regret how you missed all those wonderful moments in the race of becoming more productive.
Plaese accept your mortality and act accordingly.
What's your perspective?
