10 Ways to Fight the 10 Second Attention Span
Keeping your learner's motivation up is not easy. 10 second attention spans, crammed workdays, and mandatory trainings have put us behind the eight ball when it comes to consistently engaging our learners.
Still, there are several things we can do to maintain motivation and boost enthusiasm in our eLearning.
Here are 10 Ways to Fight the 10 Second Attention Span!
#1 Add more videos
People love to consume video content. It has become an integral part of our culture. Harness this to create an instant connection with your online courses.
TikTok and YouTube are popular for a reason. Here's a fun stat to consider:
When it comes to the daily time spent on TikTok, users spend an average of 52 minutes per day on the app.
#2 Offer fun prizes
Winning random things is fun! Add some of this fun and excitement to the learning process instead of making it feel like a mandatory (and boring) task.
#3 Keep it Short
Microlearning (short chunks of eLearning content) is where it's at! This helps the learner engage with content even when time-crunched.
It also prevents cognitive overload, which is a huge plus!
Break down your lessons into small chunks that your learners can absorb in short bursts at their own convenience and pace.
#4 Activate social learning features
If possible, turn on those chat and forum features within your LMS. This will help your learners not only engage with the course, but also boost communication and collaboration.
#5 Provide certificates of completion
Providing tangible proof of completion is an easy motivator to add to your online training. Most LMSs have this feature already built in. Give your learner's that extra incentive to see your course through to the end and reward them for their newly acquired skills.
#6 Make it a game
This can be as simple as a leaderboard to elaborate integration of gamification within your course content. Both the competitive element and fun that games provide will instantly increase engagement.
#7 Mix up the content type
Providing different types of content will help to engage different types of learners. It'll also help to keep your course from getting boring and predictable!
#8 Create in-course quizzes
This allows learners to test their knowledge as they go (and keeps them on their toes). The simple act of taking a quiz shifts the interaction with your content from passive to active.
#9 Go live
Break up all the static content and really grab your learnersâ attention by going live.
This could take the shape of an occasional instructor-led training, a Q&A session or webinar.
#10 Keep it simple
Finally, and most importantly, keep your content simple and to the point!
Nothing will lose your learners attention faster than off-topic or useless material. Theyâre taking your course to learn something specific and applicable to their daily job/life. All of your content must focus on achieving this!
Similarly, keeping it simple, means you need to match the content to the background and skill level of your learners. Talking over their heads, or preaching content that they already know, will result in immediate mental turnoff.
I hope these 10 techniques help you win the battle against the 10 Second Attention Span!
