“You can’t choose what stays and what fades away.”
Florence + The Machine
I wonder how much time I have spent trying to influence circumstances over which I have no power? And I wonder how much energy I put into trying to avoid events over which I have no control? Practicing mindfulness and meditation has to some extent eased this endless effort and burden. Despite some progress, I believe it is a lifelong practice to tap into an “accept what is” state.
Think of a person you are missing in your life. It could be someone who is dead, an old friend you have not met in a long time or someone still in your life who is no longer behaving as before. See this person within you and make contact with the longing that is aroused. Can you accept the feelings that accompany the longing without trying to change them?
