Safety Moment - Prohibited Activities |
|
|
|
The Scouting program incorporates common activities such as swimming, climbing, cycling, archery, and snowboarding that, depending on the details, may include both real and perceived risks to participants. Those risks are managed by BSA policies, procedures, and guidelines that set limits and incorporate specific features such as safety equipment or qualified supervision. Guidance is provided by, but not limited to, the Age-Appropriate Guidelines for Scouting Activities, Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat, Climb on Safely, Belay On, and the BSA shooting sports program.
Prohobited Activities Include:
- Nonadherence to the Scouter Code of Conduct
- Any activity that is not aligned with the current Age-Appropriate Guidelines for Scouting Activities
- Aquatic activities that fail to comply with Safe Swim Defense and/or Safety Afloat
- Activities related to COPE or climbing that fail to comply with Climb on Safely and/or Belay On. This includes activities on courses that are not constructed to comply with standards set by the Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) and/or are not inspected annually for integrity.
- Flying—use of hang gliders, ultralights, experimental aircraft, or nontethered hot-air balloons, or flying in an aircraft as part of a search-and-rescue mission (exceptions: transportation to Scouting events by commercial airlines; flying or tethered hot-air balloon flights following completion of the Flying Plan Checklist)

VISIT AND SHARE DISCOVERSCOUTING.ORG |
|
|
|
The Michigan Crossroads Council recently launched a new website for potential Scouting parents and families. The new site is part of our strategic membership and recruitment campaign to explain the values and benefits when participating in Scouting.
The new website is not (1) a replacement for michiganscouting.org, or (2) a place to find information about events or activities. The site was developed based on questions and information parents want to know before joining.
We encourage to visit and share with non-Scouting friends, neighbors and co-workers.

Scouting can be a very positive experience for youth of all ages. As Scout leaders, we can help youth recognize that they have a support network around them within Scouting. We need to recognize when help may be required and reach out for support when needed.
Youth (and adults) want to belong. In Scouting, we follow the Scout Oath and Law that says we will be Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind,..Cheerful,.. and we will Help Other People at all Times.
Our website has a collection of resources to better help our leaders support our Scouts and create a sense of welcoming and belonging for all.

Your Scouts can apply now for the 2024-25 Scouts BSA Youth Council. Know any Scouts BSA youth eager to have their voices heard at all levels in Scouting America? This is the opportunity for them!
Read more here.....https://blog.scoutingmagazine.org/2024/06/25/your-scouts-can-apply-now-for-the-2024-25-scouts-bsa-youth-council
The Scouts BSA Youth Council, aimed at putting youth perspectives central in program decision making, provides an incredible opportunity for qualified youth to give input and shape strategy on some of the most important topics in the organization.
Now in its fourth year, the council is ready to fill its ranks with a new lineup of Scouts for the 2024-25 term.
For the next few months, youth at least 14 years old and not yet 18 during the entire term (October 2024 through May 2025) may apply if they meet the following criteria:
- Currently in the Scouts BSA program
- Achieved First Class rank or higher
- Serving or have previously served in a position of responsibility in a Scouts BSA troop
- Scouts who apply must secure a parent or legal guardian’s permission to serve on the council. They should also be prepared to spend about 60 to 90 minutes completing the online application. Note: Applicants cannot save their progress and return later, so they’ll need to allow enough time to complete it in one sitting.
- Applying Scouts will be asked to share basic info, along with details about their Scouting experience, positions they’ve held, honors and awards they’ve earned, and events they’ve attended or staffed.
Encourage your qualified Scouts to apply for the youth council using this online application. The deadline to apply is August 31, 2024. Interested Scouts can apply now through August 31, 2024. Applicants will be notified of the selection decision via email by October 1, 2024.

Shooting Sports - Program Updates |
|
|
|
Effective September 1, 2024, Scouting’s Shooting Sports programs within all programs including Cub Scouting, Scouts BSA, Venturing and Sea Scouting will be referred to as Range and Target Activities.
Note: As a reminder, the updated Cub Scout program effective June 1, 2024 includes elective adventures versus awards for Cub Scouts. These elective adventures can still only be offered at an accredited camp program (day camp, short-term camp, long-term camp) or a council organized one day event.
In addition, effective September 1, 2024, the following changes will affect the range and target activities within Scouts BSA, Venturing and Sea Scouting. All other current Scouting range and target activities policies as indicated in the National Shooting Sports Manual remain unchanged and must be followed. These changes will be reflected in the National Shooting Sports Manual on September 1, 2024 and will be updated periodically.
