"Le Exquisite."

1a : marked by flawless craftsmanship or by beautiful, ingenious, delicate, or elaborate execution an exquisite vase. b : marked by nice discrimination, deep sensitivity, or subtle understanding exquisite taste.

The Killer was 177 pages of a very entertaining read. It's originally French, so everything about it is European in flavor, pacing and style. It plays out very much like a foreign thriller.

The titular character is one unnamed Assassin who goes out on job after job, performing his 'hits' on named targets for lots of money.

Early on Matz uses his frequent noir-ish musings to string together scenes happening in and out of time. The Killer equates his existence to a reptile, lying in wait, always being careful, not getting too irrational.

The colors -and the use of them in a very cinematic style- are outstanding. There's a certain usage of palettes that seem more like studio lighting effects than patches of color.

"Ooh la la..."

As a warm-blooded hetero male I have to at least make a nod to how luscious and beautiful Luc Jacamon draws his women. In this type of story there are a number of women he draws. Some are athletic and seductive. Others are innocent and sensual. The scenes of lovemaking are very elegant and artistic (well duh the creators here are French after all).

"Mon deux."

One nit I have to bring up is the altogether clumsy treatment of hard-core sudden action. There's a sequence of a side-swiped car, and attack with automatic weapons and a kidnapping which don't really line up here that well. Too jumbly. Maybe it's my taste leading a bias but I really wish I could've seen more destruction through car smashing and less 'blurred line' airbrush effects.

I highly recommend this series. It may exist in different forms since this is an old re-printing. I'm plucking old Graphic Novels off my shelves as of late.
