Vol. 14, March 2025

March was a month full of adventure for our study abroad programs, with students exploring new destinations and deepening their understanding of history and culture. For the first time, a group of students spent Spring Break in Greece on a special photography trip, capturing moments from the HUG experience. Meanwhile, the full-semester groups continued their journeys—HUG traveled through Turkey and the Peloponnese, HULA explored Peru’s coastal and highland regions, and HUF toured Southern Italy and Sicily. Keep reading for a closer look at their experiences!

Spring Break in Greece!

Over spring break, 30 students from various majors traveled to Greece with photography professors Noah Darnell and Jeff Montgomery for a hands-on photography experience. As they explored Athens and joined the full-semester HUG group for a tour of ancient Corinth, they captured stunning images while documenting part of the semester abroad. This trip also took place during HUG’s 30th anniversary, making it a memorable time to experience Greece. In honor of this milestone, we invite HUG alumni to share their favorite photos and memories with us at international@harding.edu—we may feature them in an upcoming newsletter or social media post!

HUG

Harding University in Greece

The HUG group had an incredible month exploring both Turkey and Greece. Their journey began in Turkey, where they visited the seven churches of Asia, walked through the ruins of ancient Troy, and explored the lively streets of Istanbul. Highlights included taking a hot air balloon ride, visiting the historic Blue Mosque, and the iconic Hagia Sophia. Back in Greece, they toured the Peloponnese region, visiting Corinth and Epidaurus before taking in the seaside beauty of Nafplion. They also explored Mycenae, home to ancient Greek legends, and walked among the ruins of Olympia, where the Olympic Games began. From biblical history to ancient wonders, this month was filled with unforgettable experiences.

HULA

Harding University in Latin America

HULA students spent the month exploring Peru’s coastal and highland regions. Their first trip took them to Nazca, where they viewed the famous Nazca Lines before heading to the sand dunes of Paracas for an exciting afternoon of dune buggies and sandboarding. A boat tour of the Ballestas Islands brought them up close to Peru’s coastal wildlife, and they finished the trip exploring Lima’s historic neighborhoods and museums. Later, the group traveled to the Colca Valley, where they stayed with Quechua-speaking families in the village of Coporaque. They helped with farming, learned traditional cooking techniques, and experienced local culture firsthand. The trip ended with breathtaking canyon views, hikes through ancient ruins, and a visit to Cruz del Condor to see the Andean condors.

HUF

Harding University in Florence

HUF students started the month with a week of independent travel before returning to campus for classes. Soon after, they set off on their Southern Italy trip, visiting the ancient Greek temples of Paestum and exploring the ruins of Pompeii with Mount Vesuvius towering in the distance. Some students took advantage of a free day to visit the island of Capri, enjoying its breathtaking coastal views. The month concluded with an unforgettable journey through Sicily, where they explored historic cities, toured ancient ruins, and took in the island’s stunning scenery. Alongside their travels, students balanced plenty of class time, deepening their understanding of Italy’s rich history and culture.

International Programs Breakout Chapel

This month, we held our third breakout chapel of the semester, focusing on how fall study abroad students can use their experiences in their future careers. Candice Moore, Anna Yingling, and Avery Smith from the Center for Professional Excellence led a session on leveraging study abroad for the job search, offering practical advice on how to highlight global experience in résumés and interviews.
