Busboys

What’s it about? A pair of idiot friends believe that if they become waiters, all of their problems will be solved. They aren't entirely wrong, but they aren't entirely right.

Why should I care? Busboys stars David Spade and Theo Von, both of whom have enjoyed mainstream success, but the film itself is a true indie production. Made outside the traditional studio system on a lean budget, it blends recognizable star power with a scrappy, independent filmmaking approach.

Anything else notable? Spade and Von didn’t just star in Busboys, they wrote and produced it themselves, drawing directly from their own real experiences as busboys to shape the film’s comedy.

Blue Heron

What’s it about? A family of six settles into their new home on Vancouver Island as internal dynamics are slowly revealed through the eyes of the youngest child.

Why should I care? Blue Heron premiered at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, where it picked up an Audience Award for Best Narrative Feature. The film has continued to build momentum with additional screenings at festivals like the Florida Film Festival.

Anything else notable? The film is directed by Sophia Park, who developed the project over several years, drawing inspiration from her own experiences growing up in a coastal community. It was shot on location with a small crew and a largely local cast.

Festival of the Week

RiverRun Film Festival

RiverRun Festival takes place April 17 - 25 this year in Winston-Salem, which additional screenings in Greensboro. The festival is an Academy Award-qualifying festival, specifically for documentary and animated shorts. So, it gives filmmakers a direct path towards Oscar consideration.

Notable films screening this year include the previously mentioned films Mother Mary, the Cannes competition title from David Lowery and Busboys, the indie comedy starring David Spade and Theo Von, as well as Slanted, the SXSW Grand Jury Prize–winning satire.

Ghost World

It’s the 25th anniversary of Ghost World, now streaming on all major platforms.

Ghost World is a sharp, offbeat coming-of-age story that helped bring alternative comic sensibilities into the mainstream. It was directed by Terry Zwigoff and based on the graphic novel by Daniel Clowes. It's also widely considered to be the breakout film for Scarlett Johansson, alongside great performances from both Thora Birch and Steve Buscemi.

Synopsis: Two eccentric best friends graduate high school and respond to a man's romance-seeking newspaper ad as a gag, only to find their lives becoming increasingly complicated.
