Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Paul
Evangelizes
in Rome”
Aim:
Summarize the points
of
Paul’s
Gospel
message;
Be
Confident
in
our ability to use Scripture to bring others to knowledge of Christ;
and Identify
ways
we can tell resistant listeners about Christ.
Background:
Acts 28:16-31
Bible
Lesson:
Acts
28:23-31
“Be
it known therefore unto you, that the salvation of God is sent unto
the Gentiles, and [that] they will hear it.” Acts
28:28 KJV
Some
Highlights:
- The
Book of Acts is the second New Testament Book (the Gospel According
to Luke being the first) authored by the physician Luke under the
inspiration of God. Its title is sometimes referred to as the “Acts
of the Holy Spirit.” Acts recounts how early followers of Jesus
Christ led by the Holy Spirit spread the Gospel far beyond the
confines of Jewish life to the whole world. In this week’s lesson,
Paul has arrived in Rome as
a prisoner and the centurion responsible for his delivery for his
appeal to appear before Caesar completes his assignment. Paul is
allowed to rent a house while continuing under house arrest with
Roman soldiers guarding him. However, he has the freedom to have
visitors. Paul continues preaching the Gospel to those anxious to
hear and those that are not. Some believe and others reject his
message. His message is that Jesus is the promised Messiah and he
validates this with Old Testament teachings and the prophesy of the
prophets of old.
-
Acts
28:23-25a,
Paul
Shares the Gospel with the Jews:
Upon
arriving in Rome, Christian brethren came from near and far to greet
Paul. Paul thanked God for his safe
arrival.
The
warm welcome that he received gave
him
encouragement
to continue spreading the Gospel.
The Roman
centurion delivered the other prisoners to the responsible officials
at the prison; however, he allowed Paul to live in
housing by
himself with
Roman soldiers guarding him. Paul
did not waste any time, three days after his arrival, he invited the
Jewish leaders of the region to hear his plight of being arrested
while
preaching
the Gospel in Jerusalem. He
had
broken
no laws or violated
any of
the
customs of their
forefathers. He explained that the Roman authorities were willing to
release him after they had examined him and
found
him
innocent
of any charges
deserving the death penalty; however, the Jews protested his
release. Therefore, he was forced to appeal to Caesar. The Jewish
leaders in
this Roman region were eager to hear Paul’s message. Our study
begins with the Jewish leaders
setting
a day and time to come to
hear
Paul. On the designated day, a large crowd came to hear what Paul
had to say. Paul
shared with them from morning to night the message of the kingdom of
God attempting to persuade them that Jesus was the promised Messiah
as proclaimed by the Law of Moses and the
Prophets (Pentateuch and Books of Prophesy). Sadly some believed and
others did not. They disagreed among themselves on what they had
heard from Paul and they disbursed.
- Acts
28:25b-27,
The
Jews Turn Away:
Paul
gave
them
one last word before they departed. He
referenced the
prophet Isaiah, who
foretold their lack of belief.
(Isaiah
6:9-10)
God
told Isaiah to go speak to his people, but God
told him
that
they would not hear him or accept his
message
from God. Indeed they heard Paul’s words, but they could not
accept them. The
senses of hearing and seeing were active and
operational,
but hearing did not result in belief and nor did seeing result in
acceptance. Furthermore, their because
their hearts
had become hardened and callused and
they were not
able to receive the Gospel. Their
hardness of heart did not permit
them to recognize
or
accept that Jesus was the promised Messiah from God. They
closed their spiritual eyes and ears to the Gospel; therefore,
rejecting the spiritual healing available through faith and
acceptance of Jesus Christ.
-
Acts
28:28-31,
Paul
Preaches to the Gentiles:
Finally,
Paul declared
to the Jewish leaders that the salvation of God that had
been
first
available to the Jews
would now to offered to the Gentiles who
would willingly accept it! The Jewish leaders departed arguing and
disputing among themselves. Paul remained in Rome for two years
living in a rented
house at his own expense and
welcomed
all who would come to hear the
message of the Gospel. He preached the kingdom of God and boldly
taught
all
who would hear about the Lord Jesus Christ. In
contrast to his circumstances in Jerusalem, where certain Jewish
objected to his preaching and teaching of the Gospel,
he encountered no hinderance or resistance in
Rome.
Take
Aways:
-
We
must share the Gospel without regard to our circumstances. The Good
News must be spread!
-
Do
not be discouraged when and if you encounter those who will not
accept the Good News. Keep
sharing!
-
Remember
that sharing the Gospel is not about us but it
is about
Jesus the Christ!
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“Who
then is Paul, and who [is] Apollos, but ministers by whom ye
believed, even as the Lord gave to every man? I have planted, Apollos
watered; but God gave the increase. So then neither is he that
planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the
increase.” 1 Corinthians
3:5-7 KJV
“Go
ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of
the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to
observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am
with you alway, [even] unto the end of the world. Amen.” Matthew
28:19-20 KJV
“For
whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose
his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. For
what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and
lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his
soul? Whosoever therefore shall be ashamed of me and of my words in
this adulterous and sinful generation; of him also shall the Son of
man be ashamed, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the
holy angels.” Mark
8:35-38 KJV
“Ye
are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be
hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on
a candlestick; and it giveth light unto all that are in the house.
Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good
works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” Matthew
5:14-16
KJV
“But
sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and [be] ready always to [give]
an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is
in you with meekness and fear:” 1 Peter
3:15 KJV
