Earlier this month, we reached out to friend of our Fansite ‘Stan Hey’, writer of several classic Auf Wiedersehen, Pet episodes.
To celebrate 37 years of the greatest award-winning comedy/drama to grace British television screens, we asked Stan to recall his memories when he was invited to pen Series 1, Episode 5 ‘Home Thoughts from Abroad’.
This episode would place flesh on Pat Roach's character as Bomber struggling with family life having learned his distressed 16-year-old daughter Tracy had ran away from home. When Bomber returns to the UK to support his family, the plot reveals Tracy roaming a somewhat hostile and alien ‘BECO Building Site’ in Dusseldorf, Germany in search of her father. Back home, Bomber is quick to comfort his wife Patsy assuring her their daughter will be in safe hands with Dennis and Neville… and Wayne!! …and Oz!!!
Find out about Stan’s ‘seat of the pants’ approach to writing, how his former working credentials allowed him to draw upon the ‘working man’s humour’, where his idea of Neville working in the Indian restaurant came from, which topics he was asked to avoid, and discover the welcome he received at his first script read-through with the Magnificent 7 back in 1983.
Stan has also unearthed some incredible never-before-seen original hand-written scripts from this episode including plot strands and notes with many classic one-liners which have since become embedded in AWP folklore by fans across the globe.
