STAN HEY - 'HOME THOUGHTS FROM ABROAD'

Earlier this month, we reached out to friend of our Fansite ‘Stan Hey’, writer of several classic Auf Wiedersehen, Pet episodes.

To celebrate 37 years of the greatest award-winning comedy/drama to grace British television screens, we asked Stan to recall his memories when he was invited to pen Series 1, Episode 5 ‘Home Thoughts from Abroad’.

This episode would place flesh on Pat Roach's character as Bomber struggling with family life having learned his distressed 16-year-old daughter Tracy had ran away from home. When Bomber returns to the UK to support his family, the plot reveals Tracy roaming a somewhat hostile and alien ‘BECO Building Site’ in Dusseldorf, Germany in search of her father. Back home, Bomber is quick to comfort his wife Patsy assuring her their daughter will be in safe hands with Dennis and Neville… and Wayne!! …and Oz!!!

Find out about Stan’s ‘seat of the pants’ approach to writing, how his former working credentials allowed him to draw upon the ‘working man’s humour’, where his idea of Neville working in the Indian restaurant came from, which topics he was asked to avoid, and discover the welcome he received at his first script read-through with the Magnificent 7 back in 1983.

Stan has also unearthed some incredible never-before-seen original hand-written scripts from this episode including plot strands and notes with many classic one-liners which have since become embedded in AWP folklore by fans across the globe.

To discover the back storey as to how this episode was crafted from scratch, and to see Stan's original handwritten ink-blotted drafts, head on over to the Fansite now.

We would like to sincerely thank Stan Hey for taking time out of his busy schedule to write this exclusive piece for the Fansite.

AUF WIEDERSEHEN, PET: HOW SERIES 1 TOOK BRITISH TELEVISION BY STORM

The lads hit the press once again this week thanks to our pal David Morton at the Evening Chronicle as he takes us on a trip down memory lane.

Join David as he recently touched base with Auf Wiedersehen, Pet Fansite founder Lee Barratt when they discussed how the original format – based on an original idea by Franc Roddam – was initially conceived as a film before Ian La Frenais and Dick Clement were convinced it would make an incredible series.

David looks back at the economic down turn of the 80’s forcing unemployed labour to escape Margaret Thatcher’s Britain in search of work.

Find out what Tim Healy and Jimmy Nail had to say following the realisation they’d landed the legendary roles of Dennis Patterson and Leonard Jeffrey ‘Oz’ Osborne and what the Evening Chronicle’s headline read the day after the final episode of series 1 aired!

BECO BUILDING SITE VS EASTENDERS

It’s no secret; the BBC’s flagship soap ‘EastEnders’ was constructed on the very same spot as Auf Wiedersehen’ Pets ‘BECO Building Site’ on a small backlot plot at Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire, England (check out www.becobuilding.site for more info).

Following filming the 13th final explosive episode of Auf Wiedersehen Pet, Series 1; ‘When the Boat Goes Out’ – also written by Stan Hey – the film set was flattened to make way for a brand new out-door film set that would become the focal point for the BBC’s longest running East-End soap.

Due to the marvels of technology over recent years, a replica EastEnders film set is currently nearing completion to meet the demands of HD television meaning the original set will once again be reduced to rubble.

In order to document the long running history of this magical plot of land, team member Andy Patrick has transposed ‘Albert Square’ over the former ‘BECO Building Site’ giving fans a hands-on interactive aerial comparison of both iconic film sets!

Toggle between aerial plans to compare each film set and for the first time ever, discover the precise location of ‘Hut B’ in relation to Albert Square!
