Back when I was taking my first stabs at writing, there weren’t a lot of venues to publish gay fiction with romantic storylines, particularly if they contained supernatural, sci fi or other speculative elements.
I remember submitting the story Starlight to a gay vampire anthology called Blood Lust with a simmering feeling of anticipation, because the short really felt like something special to me. And it turned out to be the first time my work came out in print in 2005. (I had another short that came out on CD in 2002. PsyCop came along in 2006.)
Revisiting Starlight recently to update the cover, I found the prose a little purple. But since the main character, Joseph, is a century old vampire, I’ll allow it. I’m still pretty tickled by the story, which features the opposites-attract dynamic that still threads through my work to this day.
