The President: Brexit deal has what we expected
President Gitanas Nausėda is attending the European Council meeting which endorsed the Brexit deal between the United Kingdom and the European Union. For final implementation, the deal needs to be ratified by the European and British parliaments.
According to Gitanas Nausėda, the agreement reached is good news for EU member states. “The European Union has unanimously agreed that the withdrawal deal will provide for a constructive Brexit scenario, which will ensure the interests of the entire European Union, including Lithuania. It is critical for Lithuania to maintain dynamic relations with the United Kingdom in the areas of security, defense, finance, economic cooperation, and trade. The agreement – if ratified by the European and British parliaments – is also important because it will safeguard the rights of Lithuanian nationals living in the United Kingdom,” the President said.

How does a state achieve effective deterrence? Lithuania provides an example.
Deterrence has always been a crucial element in ensuring one’s security. In classic international relations literature, punishment and denial are described as drivers of effective deterrence. Yet, the intent of this article is not to delve into theories but to offer a practical view on deterrence as a reflection of the author’s time as deputy defence minister of Lithuania and as an incentive to reimagine the concept.

Welcome remarks by Vytautas Vasiliauskas at the Economics conference Labour Market in the 21st Century:The Way Forward
"According to Eurostat data and taking into account differences in prices, before the crisis Lithuania’s GDP per capita amounted to a meagre 60% of the EU average. Today, we have reached more than 80% of the Community’s average. Of course, GDP per capita is not a perfect indicator of well-being. Nonetheless, we cannot deny it – convergence is progressing. With household income growing at a faster rate than the overall price level, this process is felt by an increasingly larger fraction of society. And this is the good news. "

The story of a real Dr. Dolittle in Jewish Vilna
As Lithuania gears up to mark 2020 as the year of the Vilna Gaon and the History of the Jews of Lithuania, LRT English together with Vilnius University and Jewish Heritage Lithuania bring you a series of stories exploring Litvak history.
Born in Vilnius, Doctor Tsemakh Shabad (1864-1935) spent almost his entire life in this city, taking care of the ill and eventually becoming a prototype for a popular children’s story character, the Eastern European Dr. Dolittle.
His life was an inspiration to many, not least the writer Korney Chukovsky (1882-1969). He created the popular children’s stories character Doctor Aibolit (1925) whose prototype, according to the author, was none other than Doctor Shabad.

ATSKLEIDŽIAMAS MITINIO KAUNO ŽVĖRIES PAVIDALAS 👀 | Image of the Mythical Beast of Kaunas revealed | #kaunas2022 Ilgai laukto Kaunas 2022 mitinio Žvėries pavidalo konkursas įvyko ir komisija paskelbė nugalėtoją! _ _ _ _ _ The long awaited Kaunas 2022 contest for the image of the mythical Beast of Kaunas was finally held and the jury announced the winner. The winning image was created by Darius Petreikis. As the curator of Kaunas 2022 Mythical Beast platform and the creator of the idea Rytis Zemkauskas observes, this Beast is a real Kaunasian – modern, angular, has a lot of energy and contains all the echoes of Kaunas legends. The drawings reflect the avant-garde development of the idea of aurochs. The Beast could become the Loch Ness monster of Kaunas – attracting tourists and positively contributing to the region's economy. The fairy-tale book about the Beast is coming soon, and later on its image will appear in various contexts.

Mexican gave up profitable bakery business to live in Vilnius
Manuel Palacios from Mexico City gave up a profitable bakery business in the heart of Mexico City to study and live in Vilnius.
Having some German ancestry (his great grandmother was Elher), he felt the desire to leave his native Mexico and live in Vilnius, Lithuania. „ I know that there is something here in Europe that is for me. I feel it,“ says the artistic, piano-playing student.
- What did you know about Vilnius before coming?
- I didn‘t know much. I started looking at YouTube videos. I wasn‘t expecting really anything. It seemed like a very nice country with very beautiful girls (he smiles). I wanted to see what the city where I will live, looked like. I know it‘s a big challenge because I don‘t speak the language yet.
