EU-GCC Workshop on Solar Energy Technologies, 2-3 December 2018, Kuwait

Under the patronage of the Minister of State for Housing and Chairman of the Public Authority for Housing Welfare H.E. Dr. Jenan Boushehri, the EU-GCC Clean Energy Technology Network in partnership with the Kuwait Society of Engineers and in association with MESIA, is organising an EU-GCC Workshop on Solar Energy Technologies. The workshop entitled Renewables: A Key Driver for Clean Energy Transition will take place at the National Library of Kuwait in Kuwait City, on 2 and 3 December 2018. The two-day workshop will bring together policymakers, project developers, financial institution, technology leaders, industry advisories, financial experts, government representatives, and entrepreneurs to debate the key challenges and opportunities in solar energy segment in policies, engineering, technology advancement and business models.
We welcome suggestions and contributions from Network members in the agenda, as appropriate.

3rd EU-Arab World Summit 2018, October 29 & 30, Athens, Greece

The EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network was a Programming Partner of the 3rd EU-Arab World Summit 2018, "Shared Horizons" hosted in Athens on October 29 & 30, 2018. The high level, organised under the auspices of H.E. the President of the Hellenic Republic Mr Prokopios Pavlopoulos and the Patronage of the European Parliament the EU-Arab World Summit was supported by the Prime Minister of the Hellenic Republic and the Hellenic Government and aimed to provide the necessary platform and tools for enhanced cooperation, the key to our prosperity and security.
Within the framework of this collaboration, the Network organised a top-line discussion session on Day 1 of the Summit on “Cooperation with the Arab States on Climate Change and Energy Transition”. The session was moderated by the Director of the Network, Mr Frank Wouters and engaged high-level officials and domain experts, namely: Gerassimos Thomas, Deputy Director General for Energy, European Commission, Paul van Son, Chairman MENA & Turkey, RWE Innogy, and Andreas A. Executive Workshop - Energy Efficiency: A Key Driver for Clean Energy Transition, 28-29 October 2018, Muscat, Oman

GCC and EU experts met in Oman to share policies and best practices on energy efficiency
Energy efficiency policies, technologies and practices for the industrial and building sectors in the EU and in the GCC region were discussed during a two-day executive workshop held from 28-29 October in Muscat. The event organised by Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) and the EU-GCC Clean Energy Technology Network, gathered more than 180 experts representing policy makers, authorities, industry, building energy-users, engineers and technology providers as well as academicians and researchers.
During the event high level addresses were made by Raoul Restucci, Managing Director of PDO, Taina Sateri, Trade Counsellor in the European Union Delegation in the UAE, as well as from Dr. Hilal M. Almukhaini, Director, Energy Department, GCC Secretariat General and Dr Mustapha Taoumi, Energy Technology Expert, EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network.
The two-day executive workshop included high level sessions on strategies and markets for energy efficiency technologies; strategies, policies and regulations to promote energy efficiency technologies; business models and financing; energy efficiency in buildings and advanced cooling technologies; energy management within industry sector; smart cities, smart buildings and digital technologies; as well as dedicated sessions on EU-GCC cooperation opportunities and a PDO Majlis event on energy efficiency.

The Dubai Solar Show, part of WETEX allowed the Network for three full days of successful networking, knowledge exchange, training and interesting discussions. The Network as a knowledge Partner at the Dubai Solar Show Seminar Week, supported 3 full days of seminars delivered within the framework of the Dubai Solar Show Seminar Week. The Network experts had a strong presence and contributed significantly in organising the Seminars week and delivering specific topics within the event.

9th Dii Annual Conference “Desert Energy Leadership Summit”, 22 October 2018, Dubai,UAE
|

The Network was a Supporting Partner of the 9th Dii Annual Conference “Desert Energy Leadership Summit” (DELS) held on 22nd October 2018 at the Grosvenor House, Dubai Marina, United Arab Emirates. Focus of the DELS was on the way to go in the four key energy market components: a. green energy generation, b. transport of electricity / green molecules, c. the spectrum of stabilizing and optimizing storage means of cold/ heat/ hydro/ gravitation& electricity and d. the interaction with flexible industrial and residential demand.
The Network had again an active presence at this year’s event. Frank Wouters, Director of EU-GCC Clean Energy Technology Network moderated the morning session including the Top Executives panel. Moreover, and within the context of the Interactive parallel Dii style Round Tables, the Network organised and contributed in two Round Tables. One focusing on Electrical Interconnections moderated by Nick Carter, EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network – Convener and Deger Saygin, Director at SHURA Enerji Transition Center. The second roundtable dealing with Green Molecules (Renewables based hydrogen etc.) and was moderated by Prof. Ad van Wijk, Professor, TU Delft and Frank Wouters, Director, EU GCC Clean Energy Technology Network. The Network at the KAPSARC Meeting On 4 October 2018, Frank Wouters participated at the roundtable dialogue in Brussels called “Integrated Approaches to Decentralized Electricity Transitions” organised by the King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC). The primary objective of this roundtable dialogue was to gain a better appreciation of the policy, legislative, regulatory and system dimensions of decentralized electricity transitions. The dialogue generated new knowledge and insights on this subject and laid the foundations for future deliberations.

The Network is organising interesting sessions and activities in a number of events for the coming months and ofcourse we will have an active presence at the World Future Energy summit in Abu Dhabi, in January 14-17, 2019 partnering with the European Commission DG Energy for the EU Energy Day and other initiatives there.

The Network team has developed and launched the EU-GCC Clean Energy Virtual Research Lab. It is a virtual lab-space within the Network's website, where EU and GCC research institutes and laboratories, are able to share their ideas, resources, knowledge, information, and material.
