HOW TO IMPROVE YOUR INDOOR AIR QUALITY

Dramatic changes have occurred in the building materials around us, common chemical pollutants found in our homes and offices may contain chemicals harmful to humans such as: formaldehyde, benzene, carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxides.

Formaldehyde is used to produce pressed wood and fibreboard, which many builders use instead of natural wood. Formaldehyde is also used in carpeting and paneling, in furniture and clothing, in fire retardants, household cleaners, paper bags, facial tissues, hair spray et cetera.

Benzene is a solvent found in items such as gasoline, paint, oils, inks, plastics and rubber.

Nitrogen oxides manifest in the atmosphere due to the burning of  tobacco and wood products.

Plants beautify living spaces while simultaneously helping remove these chemical pollutants from the air in our homes and offices. Plants with larger leaves are most efficient at removing formaldehyde. It is recommended to place plants in areas where air is circulating for maximum effectiveness. Situate plants so that the circulating air makes contact with the top of the soil/root ball in the plant pot.

Plants used to improve air quality include, but are not limited to: Arrowhead, Bamboo Palm, Chinese Evergreen, Corn Plant, Dracaena, English Ivy, Fig, Gerbera Daisy, Peace Lily, Pepperomia, Philodendron, Pot Mum, Pothos (Marble and Golden), Snake Plant, and Spider Plant.

BENEFITS OF NEGATIVE IONS

When breathing fresh air in forested mountains, at the beach, a waterfall, or in a thunderstorm do you notice an elevated mood, balanced energy, and cognitive performance? It might be due to negative ions.

Negative ions are molecules floating in the air or atmosphere that have been charged with electricity.

Negative ions exist in nature:

• ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun
• discharges of electricity in the air after a thunderclap or lightning strike
• wherever water collides with itself like a waterfall or the ocean shore
• produced as part of the normal growth process for many plants

In a 2018 review researchers looked at 100 years of studies and found evidence that negative ions can

• help regulate sleep patterns and mood
• reduce stress
• boost immune system function
• increase metabolism of carbs and fats
• kill or inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria, viruses, and mold species, such as E. coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and the bacterium that causes tuberculosis

The best way to receive negative ions is to go to where they exist naturally. There’s little anyone can say against spending a little time outdoors.

• Step outside in the rain.
• Visit a forest, waterfall, creek, riverbank, or beach.
• Sit beside a decorative water fountain, often found at parks.
