Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Praise God with Music”
Aim: Compare
the
reason for and the expressions of praising God in two psalms;
Gain
tspiritual
inspiration by variou3ds types of praise music and hymns, and Praise
God
using the psalms.
Background:
Psalm 147, 148, 149, and 150
Bible Lesson:
Psalm 149:1-5; 150:1-6
Memory
Verses:
“Let every thing that hath breath praise the LORD.
Praise ye the LORD.” Psalm 150:6 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
As
has been mentioned in other lessons, the Book of Psalms can be
grouped into five sections with the themes: creation, the nation of
Israel, God’s holiness, the sovereignty of God’s kingship over
all nations, and thanksgiving and praise. Our study of Psalm 149 and
150 come from fifth section, thanksgiving and praise. Psalms 146
through 150 are called the Hallelujah Psalms. The Hebrew word,
Hallelujah, simply means “praise the Lord.”
-
Psalm
149, opens with the Psalmist exhorting the reader to Praise the
Lord! And enjoins the reader to sing a new song. Why new, because
the praise due our God deserves something special. He provides us
new mercies everyday. He says just don’t sing the new song alone
but in the assembly with other worshippers who join together to give
praise to our God. All who believe and trust in God cannot help but
to join in praising Him who is Almighty. The Psalmist becomes
personal and speaks of Israel as God’s people whom God not only
created, but chose as His people to spread the word of His mighty
works and to exalt Him as King. In addition singing praises to His
name with spontaneous dancing in delight is encouraged with the
accompaniment of the tambourine and the harp, musical instruments of
the time. In other words, praise is a joyous act including human
emotions of adoration, glee in appreciation for what God has done.
-
Next
the Psalmist announces that God delights in His people. Who are His
people? Those who love and trust in Him and seek to do His Will.
Those who exhibit true humility are crowned or adorned with victory.
Victory denotes God’s provisions and protection for His people as
we journey through life. Because of God’s favor on our lives, we
are to rejoice and
exhibit true joy and delight in appreciation for God’s grace and
mercy showered on us each day of our lives. Again the Psalmist
encourages a musical response of joy as we reflect upon the God’s
Goodness and Mercy.
-
Psalm
150, begins as 149, with the Psalmist exhorting the reader to
“Praise the Lord!” Where is God be praised? The Psalmist says
in His sanctuary. The sanctuary refers to the Holy location where
God’s presence dwelt. In the Temple this area called the Holy of
Holies. In actuality the whole Temple area was considered Holy or
set apart for the worship of God. The Psalmist also cites Praise of
God to be a never ending part of existence in heaven.
-
Next,
the Psalmist gives the reason for the praise that is due God. First
for His mighty Works. God’s works are mighty, the creation of the
universe, the daily provisions for His creation, Forgiveness of sin,
salvation through Jesus Christ for humankind, providing the
indwelling of the Holy Spirit for believers, and on and on and on …
The Psalmist just sums this up with praising God for “His
unequalled greatness!” We can all attest that God has no equal and
the words Greatness, Excellence, and Awesomeness are mere human
terms that are collosal understatements of God’s unspeakable Power
and Capabilities!
-
The
Psalmist moves on to describe how to praise God and again musical
instruments are presented as a means of giving praise. First there
is the ram’s horn similar to a modern day brass instruments. This
instrument symbolized God’s voice, God’s victory, and God’s
freedom. On mount Sinai, when God spoke it was likened to that
of a trumpet or horn blast. At the victory over the city of Jericho,
the trumpet was sounded as the walls came tumbling down. In the year
of Jubilee, when all debts were forgiven, the trumpet was sounded
signaling freedom. Other instruments mentioned were the psaltery
which is plucked to produce sound, a harp which is strummed to make
sound, a timbrel or modern day tambourine accompanied with dancing,
stringed instruments, organs which perhaps are similar to the modern
day flute, and two types cymbals. With this array of instruments, a
symphonic melody of praise is
given
to Our God to celebrate His Magnificence!
-
Finally,
the Psalmist concludes his exhortation of praise with recognition
that everything that hath breath, meaning every living being, needs
to give praise to our God. For He gave breathe and sustains breath
for every living being. Praise Ye the Lord!
Take
Aways:
-
God
is worthy of all praise!
-
Our
praise to God should be an expression of appreciation for all that
He has done, all that He is doing, and all that He will do!
-
Music
is a joyous and expressive means of giving praise to God!
Bible
Verses to Keep in Mind:
“I
will praise [thee], O LORD, with my whole heart; I will shew forth
all thy marvellous works.” Psalm 9:1 KJV
“So
we thy people and sheep of thy pasture will give thee thanks for
ever: we will shew forth thy praise to all generations.” Psalm
79:13 KJV
“O
give thanks unto the God of heaven: for his mercy [endureth] for
ever.” Psalm 136:26 KJV
“Have
mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto
the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.”
Psalm 51:1 KJV
“[For
as the heaven is high above the earth, [so] great is his mercy toward
them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, [so] far
hath he removed our transgressions from us.” Psalm 103:11-12 KJV
