JOIN at the info event of the Johanniter Relief Association Belgium
On 25th April, the newly founded Johanniter Hilfsgemeinschaft Belgien (Johanniter Relief Association Belgium) welcomed all interested parties to their initial informational event in Brussels. The relief association has already organised various forms of aid for Ukraine and developed further plans and activities to help people in need. Christian Velten-Jameson (JOIN Vice-Chairman) and Eva Pelgen (JOIN Office) attended the event.
Webpage of the Five Johannine Orders
The Cooperation group of the five Johannine Orders - gathering the Alliance of the four protestant Orders of St John and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta - launched a joint webpage. It serves as a general entry point for anyone to the Orders, for cooperation and to show their common heritage. The webpage is available at www.ordersofsaintjohn.org.
Two German volunteers at the London Marathon
The 2023 London Marathon was the 43rd edition of the annual running event in London. The marathon took place on 23rd April and was the third race of the World Marathon Majors 2023. St John Ambulance had hundreds of volunteers on standby throughout the track to support the runners with any first aid needs, as well as some of its own fundraisers who were running for St John. New opportunities in England and Finland
This month we added three new opportunities to our Volunteer Swap programme. St John Ambulance is welcoming Cycle Responders to join their team at the Hackney Half Marathon on 21st May. Further, from 16th to 24th June you can join St John Ambulance for the Cambridge Summer Balls. After summer exams, many colleges at the University of Cambridge throw extravagant parties for their students that run from early to shortly after dawn. St John Ambulance is providing first aid around 20 different balls and parties over the course of the week. Find all details here. Germany: Johanniter aid for people affected by the earthquake
In the third week of April, Aydan Özoğuz, Vice-President of the German Bundestag, visited the soup kitchen of Johanniter and its partner Multi Aid Programs - MAPS in Bozhüyük, Hatay province. Twice a day, up to a thousand hot meals are cooked here for the population. Ms Özoğuz was accompanied by Janina Dreier, who was deployed in the region directly after the earthquake as a member of the Johanniter emergency relief team. The needs remain very high, especially for water and health care as well as schooling for the children.
Swedish Order: First Newsletter published
The first issue of the membership magazine of the Johanniterorden i Sverige and Johanniterhjälpen was published this month. The publication will take the form of a regular newsletter to strengthen communication and inform about the latest activities and news. This issue includes articles about the relief efforts for Ukraine, support activities in Estonia, Johanniter International and the JOIN Office, the St John Eye Hospital and upcoming events and meetings. Our Hungarian member has published its first newsletter of the year in which the organisation reports about its aid provision, international relations, training and recent news. Amongst others, you can read about the meeting of our Fundraising Working Group in Berlin and the visit of a team of young Johannita volunteers to the headquarters of Johanniter Austria (in Hungarian) here.
Netherlands: First Johanniter care holiday of the year
This year’s first care holiday at Allegoeds Group Hotel in the Netherlands took place from 22nd -28th April. The week of holidays for older people in need of care includes several planned trips with assistance by Johanniter volunteerswho take people by the arm or push a wheelchair and overall ensure that the guest has a carefree, happy holiday. You can participate in four further holiday weeks (in May, twice in June, and in September) as part of our Volunteer Swap.

World Health Day 2023
Every year on 7th April, World Health Day is celebrated for raising global health awareness. We honour and celebrate the contribution of our highly trained health workforce, both volunteers and staff. In 2022, volunteers and staff of the Order of St John trained 1.1
million people in first aid globally and provided 1.8 million people with clinical medical assistance through their ambulance services or community support programmes. Going hand in hand with this year’s theme Health for all JOIN provides its European First Aid Guidelines free for everyone to download. The First Aid Manual conveys basic first aid in 17 languages at www.firstaidjoin.org along with resources for children playfully introducing them to safety and first aid.
MED1stMR consortium meets in Madrid
From 17th to 18th April, the MED1stMR consortium came together for the fifth face-to-face meeting. The participants from 17 organisations were welcomed by Servicio Madrileño de Salud (SERMAS) in Madrid. The main goal of the two-day meeting was to set up a detailed schedule for the upcoming field trials in 6 end-user organisations all over Europe. The initial field trial will be organised by our Austrian members in Vienna in July. Continue reading
