April PAW This Month!

PAW Dog of the Month: Simba

ADOPT SIMBA!

Simba is a 1.5 year old, 57 lb., Husky mix.  He is very sweet with people and other dogs and has a TON of energy!! He wants to play play play! Simba would definitely do best with a very active person/family that loves to go hiking or for runs daily. His previous shelter notes that he is very affectionate, loves attention and to be petted.

His short-term foster mom says the following:

“Simba had such a great weekend. We walked around the Naval Academy, took him to Bass Pro, and he had a pup cup! No accidents inside and I would argue had better house manners than a lot of other dogs we have had. He knows sit, waits patiently for his meals, and plays fetch. There was no begging or counter surfing during food prep or dinner. We did not crate him at all, he had free reign of the house and slept all night. He LOVES to give kisses.

He was quick to settle down after our walks and lounged on the couch with us. If anything startles him or he is unsure he will sit between your legs for reassurance. It took awhile for him to settle down with our other dog Daisy, but she can be testy sometimes.

He picks up on commands very quickly and was very responsive to his name.”

Do you have room in your home for this lovely young guy?

Thank you for helping Simba find his forever home!

PAW Cat of the Month: Zuko

ADOPT ZUKO!

Meet Zuko, a handsome 6 year old male grey tabby who is pretty chill most of the time. He likes nothing better than hanging with you, playing with toys with you and petting sessions, and will snuggle with you while you sleep. He loves to lounge in the sun and keep you company while you work. Zuko can get overstimulated, so we recommend a home without small children or dogs. He's lived with other cats and gotten along with them well, though would be fine a single cat. If you are looking for a low maintance companion, Zuko's your boy!

Zuko has tested negative for FIV/FElV, neutered, and is up to date on his vaccinations.

If you'd like to be considered for adoption, please complete the adoption application (click button below).

If you would like to learn more about Zuko please contact Annaliesa at catmanager@paw-rescue.org.

Thank you for helping Zuko find his forever home!

Upcoming Fundraising Opportunities!

How Maryland and Federal Employees Can Help PAW

Maryland Charity Campaign (MCC): is a workplace charitable giving program that offers State Employees and eligible Retirees the opportunity to contribute to charities using the convenience of payroll deduction. Currently, more than 800 charities participate in the campaign, including PAW.  If you are a MD State employee or eligible retiree and would like to donate to PAW through the MCC, please go to:  https://mcc.maryland.gov/. Thank you!

Combined Federal Campaign (CFC): About 85% of PAW expenses this year will be for veterinary care and boarding for our rescue animals. Our funding is entirely dependent on individual bequests, donations at fundraising events, the website, and the Combined Federal Campaign. CFC is the workplace charitable donation vehicle for active and retired federal employees and contractors, and represents more than 22,000 charities. We receive about 20% of our income through CFC, a 50% decline over recent years. Donations to all CFC charities are down and this year's fundraising atmosphere will be particularly challenging. If we are to continue to rescue, heal, and place animals at our current pace, we need to raise significantly more CFC funds. If you are an active or retired federal employee and would like to donate through CFC, please be sure to speak with your agency CFC coordinator. You can also ask your CFC coordinator to get us an invitation to their charity fair!  CFC events occur primarily between early October and mid-November on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. If you are interested in helping at one of the fairs, please contact Sanjeeta at psanjeeta@gmail.com. You do not need to be a federal employee or retiree to help at the fairs. We really appreciate your help!

Animal advocates celebrate as humane agenda advances in Annapolis

From our friends at The Humane Society for the United States...

ANNAPOLIS, Md.—As the Maryland legislative session comes to an end, animal advocates celebrate the passage of critical reforms. Most notably, during this session Maryland became the fifth state to prohibit the use of animals in cosmetics testing, the eighth state to ban cruel wildlife killing contests and the sixth state to protect wildlife by banning the intentional release of balloons.

“Maryland had an opportunity to be a leader and end some of the cruelest practices like animal cosmetics testing and wildlife killing contests,” said Jennifer Bevan-Dangel, Maryland state director for the Humane Society of the United States. “We are grateful that our legislature took action on these critical reforms to protect all animals.”

The legislature also passed several reforms that will protect companion animals, including:
