The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) has reported an incident that occurred 102NM Southeast of Nishtun, Yemen.
The vessel's Captain reported that a small craft approached within approximately one cable's distance of the ship. An exchange of small arms fire took place between the vessel's Armed Security Team (AST) and the occupants of the small craft, which then left the area.
The vessel and its crew are reported to be safe and are proceeding to their next port of call.
Analysis: This incident marks the second occurrence within a 24-hour period in the immediate vicinity, involving small craft matching the same description and modus operandi. Analysis suggests a high probability of continuity, indicating potential repeat attempts by the same individuals to illegally board vessels.
On 14 March the Maritime Security Centre – Horn of Africa (MSCHOA) advised that four potential pirate groups (PAG) were operating in the region. It was assessed that the PAGs may be seeking ships to target.
Data from MSCHOA also shows there have been more than 20 hijackings or attempted hijackings of vessels in the Gulf of Aden and Somali Basin since November.
It is possible pirates have been encouraged by a relaxation of security, or may be taking advantage of the chaos caused by attacks on shipping by Yemen's Houthis.
The Castor Vali team will continue to provide updates and analysis to support informed decision-making in navigating these waters.
Immediate attention and heightened security measures are advised. All vessels in the area are advised to proceed with caution and to report any suspicious activities to the UKMTO.
