During the Global Lithuanian Awards | GLA 2020 ceremony in July, GLL along with 14 Clubs of Lithuanian Professionals Abroad addressed President Gitanas Nausėda, inviting him to collaborate and aim for more ambitious goals in terms of human rights in Lithuania.
The address pointed out that the current human rights situation in Lithuania negatively affects the state‘s international image, economic competitiveness, emigration, and our ability to attract investments and global talents.
GLL and Clubs offered their contribution and called the President to initiate the National Agreement on Human Rights to make Lithuania one of the most human rights compliant EU states by 2030. READ THE FULL ADDRESS HERE.
The address came as a result of public outrage about the ratification of the Istambul convention, same-sex partnerships law, and migrants' issues. 3 out of 7 Global Lithuanian Awards 2020 laureates refused to accept the award from the President due to his stance in regards to the issues.

GLA2020 laureate Elena Archipovaitė said she would have not achieved this award if the world did not accept her as she was. In her speech, she dedicated her award "to everyone who works with people who are unseen, unfamiliar, and undiscovered as talents. [...] To those who still work in Lithuania today, and work with everyone, no matter who they are, where they come from, what they do, as they first and foremost regard them as people." The address to the President caught the attention of the business daily "Verslo Žinios". They invited GLL CEO Aušra Kukelkaitė for an extensive interview to get a deeper understanding of the network.
"A lot of things have changed in terms of Lithuania's relation to diaspora since GLL was established over 10 years ago. The current government sees the value of the global diaspora network and is willing to engage with them. Moreover, the diaspora already has its Constituency, and the current minister of economics Aušrine Armonaitė is elected by global Lithuanians. With each step that makes diaspora more integral part of our society, they feel more empowered to speak up on important Lithuania matters," - explained A.Kukelkaitė. READ THE FULL INTERVIEW HERE.

CALL FOR ACTION: Join the task force to help handle the migrant situation in Lithuania
An Ethiopian-Lithuanian GLL friend Eskedar Maštavičienė took a lead to mobilize a task force to aid the Lithuanian government in handling the migrant situation. Some communication experts, business leaders, media, and NGO representatives have already joined the task force, and we are now calling for more professionals within the GLL network with experience in migration policy-shaping, anthropology, psychology, and any other field that concerns migration issues. The task force will work on 1) reshaping the current public narrative on migrants and 2) aiding the Lithuanian government in drafting a long-term policy on migration and integration.
Drop us an e-mail at reserve@lithuanianleaders.org with your short introduction to join the task force.
