Today's Bible Study Lesson
“Bildad
Misunderstands God’s
Justice”
Aim: Understand
Bildad’s
response to Job’s suffering;
Discern
carefully when others misinterpret God’s ways;
and Grow
closer
to God and live faithfully in God’s just ways.
Background:
Job
8
Bible Lesson:
Job
8:1-10,
20-22
Memory
Verse:
“Then answered Bildad the Shuhite, and said, How long
wilt thou speak these [things]? and [how long shall] the words of thy
mouth [be like] a strong wind?” Job 8:1-2 KJV
Some
Highlights:
-
The Old Testament Book of Job is a part of the collection called the
Books of Poetry and Wisdom which includes Job, Psalms, Ecclesiastes,
and Song of Solomon. The author of the Book of Job is unknown. It
records some of the oldest events recorded in the Bible. The basic
question of Job is why do the righteous suffer if God is loving and
all-powerful. After Job’s full recognition of the Lord’s majesty
and sovereignty, he ceases asking why and acknowledges that God’s
Ways and Thoughts are not known to man. Job is introduced by God as
a perfect and upright man who fears God and has turned away from
evil. He has a happy and prosperous life with seven sons and three
daughters. He also possessed a large stand of livestock. He had many
servants and was recognized as the greatest man of the east. In a
single day Satan took the lives of all his children and all of his
vast possessions. Job’s reaction is summed up in “Naked I
came from my mother’s womb and naked shall I return. The Lord
gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.”
(Job 1:21) He did not sin or
charge God with wrong. Satan’s
attack continues. This time Job’s health is the focus. He was
struck with loathsome sores from his feet to the crown of his head.
Job’s wife says to him
“Do you still hold fast to your integrity? Curse God and
die.” Job’s response is
“You speak as one of the foolish women would speak.
Shall we receive good from God and shall we not receive evil?
In all this Job did not sin with his lips.” (Job 2:7-9)
Three of Job’s friends,
Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar came
to see about him. They sat
with him for seven
day and nights in silence. Job laments
his very birth. Then Eliphaz speaks of how the Innocent prosper,
which insinuates that Job
is not innocent, but guilty and reaping
what he has sown. Job
contented that he was
just and he saw
his life as hopeless. Our study beings in Job Chapter 8, when Bildad
speaks. He
insists that Job should repent of his sin which has brought about
his prosperity reversal.
What we as
the readers of Job are privy to and Job and his friends are unaware
of is that God has allowed Satan to attack Job. Satan
believed that Job served God because he had been blessed with family
and many possessions. After
Satan had taken away Job’s children and possessions,
Satan believed that
if Job’s health was attacked, Job would no longer be faithful to
God.
-
Bildad
approached Job’s circumstances with the traditional belief
that suffering is the result of sin. He accused Job of not
confessing his sin and proclaimed that God would not pervert justice
and punish an innocent man. He further insinuated that Job’s
children’s sin(s) was worthy of death and that their death was
justified because of their sin. All of Bildad’s
accusations and assertions
were made with no evidence to substantiate them.
-
Bildad did believe that there was
hope for Job if he would just confess his sin(s). He pleaded with
Job to search deep within to discover his sin and to humbly come
before God who would restore Job’s prosperity. Bildad even
concluded that God’s restoration would be greater than Job’s
original prosperous position.
-
Bildad used tradition to support
his doctrine of retribution.
He implied that this belief and teaching had been seen and
experienced throughout time past. He gave an agricultural example
that plants cannot grow without good soil and water. Likewise,
suffering must be the indication of evil and wickedness. Of course,
Bildad was wrong. Job was not suffering for something that he had
done. God had allowed Satan to
touch Job’s children, property, and even his health. In the New
Testament in John 9:1-3, the disciples encountered a man blind from
birth and questioned Jesus as to who had sinned the man or his
parents that had caused his blindness. Jesus explained to them that
neither the sin of the man
or his parents had caused
the man’s blindness. The
man’s blindness
was permitted
so that the
works of God could be
made manifest in him. Job’s
steadfast faith under very trying circumstances provided an example
to all believers
of
how to bear hardships.
-
Bildad claimed that God would not
abandon a perfect man nor would God assist an evil doer. However,
there are many cases including Job’s
where a righteous man suffers and wicked men have prospered. God is
sovereign and His ways are not our ways nor His thoughts our
thoughts. Matthew 5:45 KJV states
“... he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and
sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.”
-
Bildad closes his words of “comfort” and advise to Job with the
belief that laughter and rejoicing can return to him and that Job’s
enemies can be thwarted. This was true, but not on the terms
proclaimed by Bildad. Instead, Job’s condition would be restored
because of God’s Sovereignty and Will. Next week’s Bible Study
will shed a spotlight on Job’s situation and ultimate outcome.
Take
Aways:
-
Suffering
is not necessarily
an
indicator of sin or wickedness
-
Trust,
faithfulness and steadfast belief in God in all circumstances will
be rewarded with great dividends
-
Prosperity
is not necessarily
an
indication of godliness or of
being
in
God’s
favor
