Her Majesty the Queen visits the RUH
to officially open the Dyson Cancer Centre |
|
Her Majesty the Queen officially opened the Dyson Cancer Centre at the Royal United Hospitals Bath (RUH) NHS Foundation Trust on Tuesday 3 September. Patients, staff, supporters and guests from the wider community were on hand to mark the occasion.
Her Majesty was given a guided tour of the new purpose-built centre, which brings together many of the RUH’s cancer services under one roof, including the RUH's oncology, chemotherapy and radiotherapy services, a 22-bed inpatient ward, a dedicated pharmacy, research team and nuclear medicine and physics teams.
Before leaving the Dyson Cancer Centre, Her Majesty unveiled a plaque to commemorate the day and was presented with a posy by a pupil at a local school whose father is a consultant oncologist within the centre.
Following the plaque unveiling Her Majesty said: “Can I congratulate all of you on this wonderful centre. I’ve had a brief tour around and everybody I’ve met - whether it’s the patients, the families or the nursing staff and the helpers - all seem to be over the moon about it.
“It’s got a very welcoming atmosphere and you can see that it actually raises people’s spirits in a very difficult time. So, congratulations to you all… it is very special so thank you very much for asking me to open it.”

Mushroom Stroganoff
Ceps, field, chanterelles, trompette, hen of the woods – the UK's wild mushrooms are at their very best right now; miss their autumn food catwalk moment and you'll seriously miss out. But if you can't get your hands on any, good old chestnut mushrooms are always reliably flavoursome and will work just as well in this elegant vegetarian stroganoff.
Ingredients (serves 2)
400g mushrooms (see above) 1 red onion, peeled and sliced 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and crushed 4 pickled onions (preferably silverskin), finely-sliced 2 cornichons, finely-sliced ½ bunch fresh flat-leaf parsley 1 tbsp capers 50ml brandy (optional) 1 tsp smoked paprika (plus extra to serve) 100ml crème fraîche (reduced fat is fine)
Method
Place a large non-stick frying pan over a high heat. Add the mushrooms and dry-fry for 5 minutes (dry-frying brings out the nutty flavour in the mushrooms), stirring regularly.
Add 1 tbsp olive oil to the pan followed by the red onion, garlic, pickled onions, cornichons, parsley stalks (chopped) and capers. Sauté over a high heat for 3 minutes, then add the brandy (if using; if not using, add 2 tbsp boiling water). Allow the brandy/boiling water to bubble down for a couple of minutes before adding the paprika, crème fraîche and parsley leaves, then toss together to combine.
Loosen with a splash of boiling water to a create a saucy consistency, then season to taste with sea salt and black pepper.
Serve immediately on a bed of steamed rice, sprinkled with a little bit more smoked paprika.

Curated by Daniel McCabe
Japan’s number one ‘Life Design Magazine’ Casa BRUTUS devotes 96 pages of its September issue to a guided visit to Finland, Denmark and Sweden in the company of clothing and textile designer Akira Minagawa (the creative force behind the mina perhonen brand) who toured the region in June of this year, kicking off with a look around Alvar Aalto's eponymous house in Helsinki. It’s a formidable round-up of Scandinavian design inspiration, curated, catalogued and presented with the impressive clarity and detail of Japanese-style layouts. Casa BRUTUS has released some real bangers of late and we’d pick this out as one of the best. | £25

CITY NEWS | FIVE-BUBBLE RATING
|
|
|
|
Thermae Bath Spa has been awarded top ranking by the UK’s Good Spa Guide.
The guide which gives spas a bubble rating - similar to Michelin stars for restaurants - has awarded the Bath-based spa a Five-Bubble rating. This is one more bubble than the four it received last year.
There are two five-bubble categories. The first is Five Bubbles Fantastic, which has been awarded to Thermae Bath Spa. The second category is aimed at seriously special spas and is known a Five Bubbles Luxury Heavenly.
Thermae Bath Spa is the only day spa in Britain that has naturally warm, mineral rich water and, with its iconic rooftop pool which has views over the city’s rooftops and surrounding hills, it attracts visitors from all over the world.
A member of the Good Spa Guide team visited the spa and enjoyed a treatment as part of the assessment. Within their review they described the rooftop pool as ‘a real show-stopper’ and praised the quality of training of the therapist who gave them a treatment.
The Good Spa Guide offers advice to spa goers as well as rating spas for their cleanliness, customer service, quality of treatments and facilities, refreshments and over-all experience. Their bubble-ratings, awards and accolades are designed to recognise excellence in the UK spa industry and celebrate their increasingly important role in supporting health and wellbeing.
