The Alcohol Education Trust - Parent Newsletter

Spring Term, May 2019, Ed 35

We hope you had a lovely Easter break! It was wonderful to see the sunshine over the school holidays!

In this edition, you can read the latest news on our Crowdfunding appeal and we have exciting awards news too. As always, we're here to support you so please do get in touch if we can help in any way.

We were delighted to be finalists in the 2019 Education Resources Awards and to have scooped Highly Commended in the secondary resource with ICT category. The award is for our online resources: the interactive student learning zone www.talkaboutalcohol.com and our teacher/parent resources via www.alcoholeducationtrust.org  This follows on from the Highly Commended award made for our ‘Talk about Alcohol’ Teacher Workbook in 2017 from ERA in addition to a number of other awards and Impact Awards including from The Early Intervention Foundation and European Platform for Investing in Children.

www.alcoholeducationtrust.org contains a wealth of information and advice for parents and carers in the dedicated parent area https://alcoholeducationtrust.org/parent-area/ . Here you can find factual information on topics such as units, guidelines and the law and lots of really helpful tips and advice on festivals, parties and talking to your children about alcohol. You can also download our handy guide for parents via https://alcoholeducationtrust.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/04/ParentGuide.pdf

www.talkaboutalcohol.com is a young-person facing interactive learning zone offering a range of engaging quizzes and games meaning young people can have fun whilst learning about how to stay safe around alcohol. The site includes a range of zones such as The Body Zone and The Challenge Zone and games such as online nightclub ‘Brave the Rave’ and ‘The Chimp Shop’ where youngsters are encouraged to make healthy choices and explore how to stay safe. Why not encourage your kids to have a look or challenge them to some of the games!

We are delighted with the ERA award which recognises the value and reach of our websites with over 100,000 unique users last year.

Crowdfunding success!

We are absolutely delighted with the result of our Crowdfunding appeal! We exceeded our original target of £20,000 and raised £22,000 through 78 wonderful supporters in just 21 days. This included £10,000 in match funding from Dorset County Council Youth Opportunity Fund. A huge thank you to everyone who supported us - we really appreciate your help!

The money raised will support the development of our Pavilion in the Park, PiP’s - a new AET office, youth space and café. Located on the Great Field in Poundbury, Dorset, the area will have Parkour for teenagers as well as an all-weather sports pitch, an outside gym and one mile walking/running track. Work is due to start on the building in Autumn this year and we are hoping it will be ready by Spring 2020! Do read more about our hopes to move out of our garden garage to a bespoke office, training space and café here: https://alcoholeducationtrust.org/pavilion-in-the-park/

National Lottery Community Fund

We are thrilled to have been awarded £10,000 from The National Lottery Community Fund to support the development of PiP's café and community space. We are getting closer and closer to the total amount needed to fund this exciting new facility!

Feature in Dorset Magazine

Dorset magazine have written a lovely feature on our CEO Helena Conibear this month on our 10th Anniversary and plans to build PiP’s café and community space. You can read the article here: https://alcoholeducationtrust.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/Feature_Dorset_Magazine.pdf
