June 2019 Newsletter
Looking forward to a great summer?

So are we.

It's June already, and we are so ready for what that means!  School is almost out, warmer weather and longer days are here to stay, and summer is on the horizon.  We know summers can be busy, and, at HDD, it is no different.  While we make every effort to accommodate your schedule, it may be increasingly more difficult to ensure your desired day and time in these busy months ahead.  If you've been meaning to reserve an appointment, don't delay!  As always, make sure you check out highlights from the office below.

Happy Father's Day

This month, we recognize all of our HDD fathers and wish you a very special Father's Day with your families.  Dr. Gil will be spending the day with his three little ones.  What do you have planned for the dad in your life?

Do you really need milk for strong teeth?

The old adage is true that milk and dairy products help to strengthen teeth and bones, but why?  Milk and dairy products are rich in calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D - essential vitamins and minerals for building healthy teeth.  However, these ingredients can also be found in other sources so they don't have to come from a dairy product.  For instance, salmon, dark leafy greens, almonds, oranges, and broccoli all contain high levels of calcium.  Magnesium can also be found in nuts, whole grains, beans, and dark leafy vegetables.   Fatty fish like tuna and salmon, as well as orange juice, egg yolks, and almond milk all contain vitamin D.  If you are meeting your calcium, magnesium, and vitamin D requirements by consuming dairy products, just be aware that milk contains lactose which is a sugar that is broken down by oral bacteria in the same way as sugars like fructose and glucose.  In the process, acid is produced which can result in tooth decay.  After consuming milk, remember to brush or at least rinse your mouth with water to avoid this harmful effect.

New Gil on the Scene

In case you missed our social media announcment, know that the new baby Gil made his arrival on his due date exactly one month ago.  Both Owen and Dr. Julee are doing great, and Dr. Gil, Evan, and Ella love having him around to snuggle.  The Gils truly appreciate the well wishes and enthusiasm from so many of our patients, and they look forward to celebrating many big moments like this one with the HDD family.  We had a 4-way tie for our office-wide guessing game of the new baby's gender and arrival date, so a big congratulations to the winners!

Meet Karen
Team Member Feature

We've been growing so quickly and adding lots of new team members so we decided to feature one team member each month so you can get to know them better.  Karen has been with HDD since the beginning, bringing with her many years of experience as a dental assistant, front desk and patient liaison, and insurance coordinator.  She helps compile all of our patients' treatment plans and works to optimize use of their insurance benefits.  Karen has two grown sons with whom she enjoys spending time.  She also likes to cook and walk with friends.
