Blank Forms is a US nonprofit organisation and publisher supporting historically significant, experimental and, it has to be said, non-commercial music. Its eighth issue in an impressive series is focused on Jerry Hunt (1943-1993), a composer/performer/electronic pioneer and near shamanic figure who broke out of traditional instrumentation and static arrangements to build his own hybrid instruments, or ‘interrelated electronic, mechanic, and social sound-sight interactive transactional systems’ as he called them. He lived his entire and relatively short life in Texas. His career and work provide a fascinating read in this bookish volume, subtitled ‘Transmissions from the Pleroma’. | £18

SoleLution's top tips for buying school shoes

SoleLution is once again running an appointment system for back to school shoe fittings, having had such good feedback from customers.

It’s already up and running and can reduce waiting time considerably. Walk-ins for those who choose not to make an appointment are still an option but these are the busiest months for selling children’s shoes, so it’s useful to know that quieter times are first thing in the morning and late afternoon.

Here are a few tips to help shopping for school shoes run smoothly:

• Make sure you know which shoes are acceptable to your children’s school
• Remember to wear socks to the fitting (SoleLution sell them if you forget)
• Ask your child to wear their new shoes around the house to make sure they are comfy
• Keep the box and receipt until you’re happy and they’re happy (don’t let them wear them outside); if they change their mind or they’re not quite right, you can always pop back in for another consultation

It’s also worth remembering children have spent the summer in sandals and trainers so they might take a while to get used to closed-in school shoes again.

University of Bristol: part-time pathway programmes

The University of Bristol welcomes mature students to apply for one of their three part-time pathway programmes, starting in January 2023. The courses are open to all, with no qualifications required to apply.

Reading English Literature is designed to help students develop skills in literary study, critical thinking and essay-writing. Black History Revisited explores contemporary debates surrounding Black History, the transatlantic slave trade and the sociology of race. Mastering English Literature is for those who wish to sharpen their study skills and bridges the gap between undergraduate and postgraduate study.

These courses offer a taste of higher education and a variety of progression routes, with many students going on to study on the part-time BA English Literature and Community Engagement degree (ELCE), on one of Bristol’s Foundation courses or onto an MA at Bristol.

Hoo-Ha! Festival, Bristol Beacon, 17 – 19 August

Bristol Beacon has announced the return of Hoo-Ha! Festival, running from 17 – 19 August: three days of music, dancing and activities for little ones and their families to get involved with.

For kids looking to get crafty, workshops run by Let’s Make Art and Aardman Animations in the Stalls Bar will spark their creative sides with a range of artistic activities. Attendees can even jump into an out-of-this-world adventure by travelling across the solar system inside the Explorer Dome.

A range of quieter activities will also be running throughout the three days, including an illustration workshop by Lucie Sheridan, who is returning to Hoo-Ha! Festival for her third year with her Live Art Booth, drawing “Rubbish Portraits” of her visitors.
