Well, adventurous writers going on quests... (I mean... competing in adventure races... ) should probably take their shoes with them.
Let me tell you a story.
So my brother-in-law and I are in hour 4 of our adventure race in the middle of a hurricane-induced day of wetness. I'm getting off a bike, prepping for a section of running along muddy roads toward check points hidden in the woods.
And I realize....
I have no running shoes.
They somehow fell out of my travel pack while I was on the bike.
So what can I do? Run barefoot? In the mud?
The real question is... AM I A HOBBIT??!?!
No.
I ran in my biking shoes. Which are like blocks of wood attached to the soles of your feet. Comfortable? No.
And now, I'm sure of it.
I wish I were a hobbit.
(How did we do, you ask? Well, we were pretty much fair to middling. But it was a wonderful time out in the wilds. And I'm excited about the next one for sure.)
